Patterson has 4 schools in mind: Mississippi wide receiver Patrick Patterson said he's narrowed his choices to four schools: Alabama, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Tennessee, where he's visiting next weekend. Patterson visited Ole Miss last weekend. "It went pretty good. I really like everything about Ole Miss," Patterson told The News.

We hadn't had a Patterson thread in a while. I was starting to think something was wrong.

All of this talk is just talk. Remember, if Patterson is sitting BETWEEN Bumphis and Thames on the WCBI special he will be a Bulldog. If he is to the side of them, he is not.*

I say yes. He makes Doug Buckles look like Dio Herrera and Eric Dotson look like Sandy Quinn.

What BS? You act like he's stringing us along or something. From what I can tell, he's been pretty damn consistent in what he says. He committed, understandably decommitted after seeing the Gulf Coast offense in living color, dropped us after Sly and the Gang got their feelings hurt and broke off communication, allowed Mullen to visit after saying the hire piqued his interest and has steadfastly maintained that we are aren't in contention for his signature and would not be one of his visit destinations ever since. If you want to blame anyone blame our fanbase for maintaining that we have a legit shot at a player that hasn't listed us as a option since Mullen's infamous in-home.

We desperately needed a HS WR and he finally "steals" Gardhigh from Marshall and everybody acts like we've signed Terrell Owens. We signed one freaking WR that we claimed was legitimate and we all thought it was the greatest thing ever. Then the guy never sees campus.

That was also the same signing day party that he talked about Gardhigh and how he only recruited receivers that were taller than him. And in that very class we signed 5'8" Adron Chambers.

...Gardhigh made it to campus but went Jane's Addiction with somebody's laptop and got kicked out of school. Wrong?

was probably one of the most heavily recruited bball players to ever come out of Mississippi. I'll never forget when he came for his visit during a game, the whole coliseum reacted like Dr. J had walked in.

He led us on and led us on and led us and finally signed with Louisville. This was back when Paul Borden was the sports editor for the CL and would actively recruit MS players for Louisville. With Borden at the CL, Charles Jones, Lancaster Gordon and Kenny Payne all signed with the 'Ville.

Payne's career was OK. The hype around his recruiting was absurd.

...........some sort of god-like status on the internet. They might as well go ahead and push Jerry Rice's NFL records down to #2 on the list, because apparently Pat Patterson is going break them all one day.

and why State and Ole Miss would have walked through hot coals to sign that tool.

I know he was good and State sure could have used him, but internet battles of that are magnitude are typically reserved for the skill players.

A few names from my days at MSU (and before)...

Basketball:
Chris Jackson
Andy Kennedy
Othello Harrington

Football:
Todd Jordan - we actually signed him and look how that went
David Fair - same as above (though he did end his career tripping over the 1st down chain - Curse of the M & W continues!)
Marcus Dupree - never really considered MSU but in the 6-Pack-less world of word of mouth, he was "just bluffing" and was coming

I know his mother, we used to teach together at Madison Central. As you probably know, he father is a minister and he is/was a big State fan. Somewhat similar to the Garrett situation. Both played at large public schools that have well-known football programs in the state, both had parents that are/were State fans, and then Buckles had the Christian angle going for him that many of our sheep love. Buckles also had the "good kid"- and he was- label attached to him as well, and a lot of our sheep love that to. Gene pumped both of them up hoping to make everyone happy on his board, and both backfired.

And being from Madison, I can tell you that the rumor around town for awhile- I think even up to Jan. of that recruiting year, was that, well, Buckles was going to be a Bulldog. I used to see him at State games a lot in 1999, to.

I don't know why he changed his mind. The rumor around town was that he and Eli "bonded" on their recruiting trip and they wanted to play together. I have no idea if that was true or not, but I don't think it's that far fetched either.

I think one of the things that made Buckles so coveted was that he was very athletic, and he was pretty fast for an o-lineman. He was one of the best I've ever seen in Mississippi High School competition. I think his biggest downfall was that he kind of lacked a "mean streak" that you need to play o-line.

Ben Justice, Mike's son and supposedly Doug's best friend, was on our roster as a walk-on.
