i also had the thought that maybe hes dealing with an undisclosed injury. he just doesnt look right. he was never the guy that would blow by a defender, but he would post his smaller guard defender up and use a slew of post moves to get a decent look. hasnt been doing that at all, and when he does theyve been blocked like 75% of time (or so it seems). between that, some very costly turnovers, and some bad fouls; he looks kind of lost out there. plus when he doesnt commit a foul and turns to ref incredulously i cant imagine that helps him getting calls later on
If he is truly injured than this is on Coaching for keeping him in there...if that is the case then all on Pike and staff

Does Simpson deserve to start? YES! We need his quickness esp on defense to help on Buie and Audige. Hyatt should be sent a message for his bonehead play the other day and he should come off the bench. We need bench scoring and that is what he should be used for.

He’s not injured and the reason he doesn’t post-up is because the game plan is primarily posting up Cliff instead (always athletic advantage).

And there’s more of an officiating emphasis on calling banging into defenders to create space, which is why we see so much flopping now. That was Paul’s only inside game. Not so simple when your edge gets taken away.

Not quick enough to score other ways, same reason he can’t defend either. What you see is all there is. Never athletic advantage.

Hyatt is not a guard and he is not used to handling the ball at such a critical part of the game. He got the ball to the PG and the PG threw it away with a risky cross court pass. You can make the argument that Simpson rather than Hyatt should’ve been in the game at that point considering that FT shooting and ball handling were needed.

Think the injury has had a major impact on Paul both physically and mentally. There could be issues in his life where he can’t focus.

Hyatt is perfectly capable of dribbling past half court when no one is within 20 feet of him

Perhaps, but the dude is a straight up head case. Mentally weak.

Enough crying. Enough throwing your hands in the air.

Put your head down and get to work.

I suspect he was told by coaching staff to get ball to Paul or Cam. Should he have adjusted on the fly? Sure. But handing ball off to Paul was not what cost us game. Paul had plenty of time to get ball across half court. He panicked, I suspect because he though he had less time than he did to cross midcourt. Hence, he made horrific cross court pass to Caleb and got picked. A comedy of errors but when it all comes down to it, I think Paul's errors were the worst of our guys on the court. Pike made his own horrific errors and that's why I thought it inappropriate for him to blame Andre by name. Pike and Paul made equally bad if not worse mental errors.

Lol these posts are the worst.

It’s not a personal attack. It’s an observation I’ve made while watching him play for a large state university. In a conference that has arguably the largest stage in college basketball.

If Paul couldn’t deal with comments from message board posts, perhaps he should have played for Susquehanna.

The beauty in all of this is you can no longer call these amateur student athletes!

Just for curiosity, in the future when this program is paying guys 250k+ to play ball here, are we still pretending “they’re just kids!”

So calling someone mentally weak by name is not personal? Got it.

And let me guess, he wasn’t mentally weak 30 days ago when he carried Rutgers at the garden with 17 second half points at the garden to beat MSU.

The best part is if you bumped into him in a restaurant you’d go ask for a picture before you ever said a fraction of the things you say here. Keyboard tough guy. God bless.

Paul is a tough player. Who knows why he's been off recently. Certainly understand the OP's frustration, but name calling not warranted. Anyway, Paul can still make all happy in RU land with good game tonight with NCAAs on line.

Paul has been who he is for his entire career. It’s why many people say “good Paul” or “bad Paul.”

It’s not like that’s some hot take that hasn’t been discussed here in the past.

And no I wouldn’t ask for a picture, not really my style. I’d leave him alone like a normal human being.

These posts are so goddamn stupid.

Why would he criticize Paul Mulcahy to his face? What would that accomplish? Whereas, this is a basketball discussion message board where presumably discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of players is, you know, reasonable.

These guys are are all like 6'4 or taller in their 20s and most posters on here probably 40+ so no, no one is smack talking at a restaurant to Paul's face lol. Kinda a silly idea.

I mean, that's not really the main reason? I'm pretty sure Paul wouldn't punch me. It's just.. criticizing a player to their face like that is super douche behavior and criticizing them on a message board is completely fair and expected.

If it were just one game I wouldn't worry too much. 3 fouls inside a minute.. with a bad call among them.. in a game and a season where Big Ten refs are allowing a lot of contact... that can throw a guy off. And his last TO.. that was on Hyatt as much as Paul.. who was likely shocked that Hyatt passed it backwards from midcourt.

But it is not just one game.

There is a reason I am about to bring up Cliff.. re: Paul.

If I were Pike.. I'd chat up the refs pregame about how Cliff is being held all over teh place. When he picks either his man or the man he picks will grab him so he cannot roll to the basket. That's a could every time and it is never called. And when teh ball goes up by someone else and Cliff is in the key.. someone grabs an arm of his... or his shoulder.. practically ALWAYS. They don't want him elevating before they do or using two hands. That, again, is a foul every time and is never called.

Now, I bring that up because it is the connection between Paul and Cliff that we need back.. and NOW. We need that for both their sakes but especially for Paul. The number of times I have seen paul dribble into the key keeping an eye out for Cliff or Rieber heading to the hoop.. and having no way to get them the ball is getting old. Paul has been turning down open threes in order to try to get Cliff the ball by driving and dishing. He needs to take that three shot again and again. OR.. he needs to start to drive in SOONER.. so he does not have to shoot some crap himself in traffic.. give him time to dish. WAY TOO MANY shot-clock violations.

Lastly.. he needs to stop trying for turnovers and GUARD HIS MAN/ZONE and BLOCK OPUT for boards. Way too many times he is looking for a double to steal or to intercept a pass and he loses his man.

Yes, unfortunately, Paul has been BAD on both sides of the ball and he has to know it.. has to feel it. I hope it is NOT the case that he is worn down late season from too many minutes. Well.. he is on two days rest not counting practice. Hope he seems fresh enough tonight.

Paul is a smart player. Nothing I have said is non-obvious. He can fix this.

No, he never could defend. Can’t fix slow. Today is an example of needing Mag. Paul got abused by Barnhizer because we needed Caleb on Buie.
