I could be wrong but it looked like Van Ness was trying to land a big move from bottom instead of just getting out and he ended up getting it.

That being said, I agree he should stop going for flash and work on just getting the escape.

It could end up being a major issue against Jaxon Joy if he doesn't go with fundamentals on bottom.
SVN does that more than anyone on the team imo, I mean looking to put guys on their back .
Most guys do it the usual way; get guy down; get complete control, then look to crank/cradle/turn em over.
SVN looks to do it differently.
Yeah a really good rider may give him trouble, but ...

Did you see the Tanefu pin for Michigan yesterday? LOL.

The thing is Davis has been planning 141 since the end of last season. This isn't a Desmond situation.
I commend Desmond for going out there at 141 when he was needed, but jumping two classes in-season is a huge ask for anyone much less a true freshman. He was inevitably going to get big brothered eventually.

Yep, SVN is definitely one of my favorites! But do hope he improves a bit on bottom.

hearing that Davis wasn't training to compete this year, and may have been 160 lbs no too long ago, he certainly passes the eye test.
Passing the “Nasir Bailey” test will be better. Don’t need a Mendez tech, but a decision against a quality opponent in a tough venue bodes well for Braeden, this team’s figurative Swiss Army knife.

I do think he is workshopping some things, 3rd time this year he has been reversed and ridden in a match.

I get and understand the concern with SVN on bottom, but, I'm just not real worried. I'd confidently bet SVN against the field.

Thinking on the spot with some Yuengling Flights in me, he'd be tied for 3rd in my PSU champ confidence poll (behind Mitchell & Levi, tied with Barr).

Can't be too upset about Lilledahl getting a regular decision, as the other kid was on skates. They need to get used to it though, as opponents will try to keep things close, looking to score at the end. He needs to find ways to score against guys wrestling him like that.

Shawver was trying to do the same with Blaze. There are a lot of really good 133's, but, I like our guy.
Ref has to call the mouse going around the wheel. Kills the sport.

Parkins has some talent. He was 2X State Champion in AAA in PA in high school (Nazareth). He was undefeated his senior year, and also had a 4th place finish as a soph. He's a true freshman in college (which makes one appreciate even more how well Blaze and Duke have wrestled this season).
He was very tough to score in in high school even when someone got to his leg.

Thought Davis was a reversal? Maybe I’m misremembering

Edit. Just rewatched this match. Davis indeed gave up takedown with about 20 seconds left. He then proceeded to get a takedown of his own to secure the major

Van Ness in the next match gave up the reversal in the first I was thinking about

174- #1 Levi Haines vs. Jordan Chapman

Period 1:
Levi has a pretty stout beard going too. Tying up & hand fighting. PSU locked up the dual win with Mesenbrink's win. Levi shoots & finishes the TD, 3-0. Chapman works to his feet, but Levi brings him back down. Chapman gets a leg, but Levi keeps hammering from top. Stalemate & restart. Chapman is still down & appears to have tweaked his shoulder. No injury time. Chapman works to his feet & gets the escape, 3-1. Levi pressures forward. He drags, then drops to a leg. Levi elevates the leg & works behind for the other leg & the TD, 6-1. Levi has Chapman's legs all twisted up. Levi gets Chapman bellied out & lets the legs go. Levi locks up a tilt. Chapman turns & almost gets a reversal, but has to settle for the escape, 6-2. Back to neutral. Tying up & hand fighting. Levi drops to a leg, but can't finish. Chapman shoots, but Levi down blocks & Chapman is injured on the mat. Chapman is going off for concussion protocol now. It looks like his head went into Levi's knee on the last shot. Chapman is good to go! Back to action. Levi starts neutral. Tying up & hand fighting. Chapman reaches, but can't get there. Levi with some snaps & time expires. 6-2 Levi, +1:12 RT

Period 2:
Levi takes down. He works to his feet & gets the escape, 7-2. Tying up & hand fighting again. Levi reaches for a leg, but can't get there. Chapman reaches, but no luck. Levi shoots & gets a leg, then finishes the TD, 10-2. Stalemate & restart. Chapman is still down. Chapman works to his feet & gets the escape, 10-3. Levi shoots, but Chapman blocks him off. Tying up & hand fighting. Levi reaches for a leg, but Chapman fights him off. Levi keeps coming & finishes the TD, 13-3. Levi quickly gets the bow & arrow locked up & then gets the FALL!!!

Levi Haines FALL Jordan Chapman (4:48)

Team Score

PSU: 34
RUT: 0
Chapman could be decent in the future!!

Of course I hope all our guys win championships, but I really want to see SVN do it this season. Top of my list.

I realize it was just Rutgers.....but every time I watch this PSU team I'm reminded of how fortunate we are as a fan base to have this program, these coaches, and these wrestlers.....just amazing and the future looks brighter than ever. Soak it up and enjoy, but never take it for granted.....we are blessed!

SNV better work on ”Hand Control “ on bottom once he gets to his feet.
