Malzahn has been calling and begging for the job. Archie has set him aside as a back-up plan in case Dungy hesitates. Archie feels that Malzahn might not be ready for a "big time" job.

there's no evidence whatsoever that what he says has any accuracy to it. Based on my personal observation ( which also has no substantiation whatsoever) UM generally will favor hiring a head coach rather than a coordinator. You might keep your eye on three names: Hudspeth, Fedora and Freeze. Dungy's name comes up simply due his association with the Mannings. No real coaching interest there. The most informed Rebel sources that I know keep coming back to those threenames. Of the three, I would say Hudspeth is slightly ahead. Leach is probably the most popular on the UM boards and would love to have the job. However, my personal opinion is that he has a little too much baggage. There's obviously a reason he's not still coaching at Texas Tech.

I'm confused... Is this a historical statement or what they are looking at now? Because the list of yalls last several hires (Tuberville, Cutcliffe, and Orgeron) were either co coordinators or position coaches. Not flaming... Just trying to figure out where you're coming from.

As far as Dungy, the rumors are serious...He's been contacted and from what I've heard (more than 5 people) he is interested to an extent for the SHORT TERM...We'll see

and departing from the past, the powers that be will hire a head coach who is presently having success with his program rather than hiringa guy(even though a goodOC or DC) who has never been a head coach. That's the impression I'm getting right now.

As I have said before...I'm a Mississippi football fan ( will be rooting for State Saturday, but would root for OM if they were in this situation state was)..Anyways, I hope they don't hire Dungy...Yes, they'd have success and to not be able to see that is illogical, but the other universities in this state would plummet...Quickly

He's a smart guy. He knows his stock is rising from the safe confines at ULL right now. OM has proven they aren't very patient with head coaches, so he knows that he probably has 2 years before the money guys want him gone if he doesn't succeed. He turned ULL around in one year, but there's no way he could turn OM around in a year - it will take a little time. Knowing that, the safer bet is to keep building your name at ULL and wait for a better job, or at least a similar job where you know the decision makers aren't near as trigger happy. If he goes to OM and gets canned in 2 years, that can do more long term damage to your career than waiting it out for a better situation while he's building the ULL program.

Of course, that logic can get thrown out the window if they throw an *** load of money at him, but I doubt the decision makers can rationalize paying him a hefty sum since it wouldn't qualify as a "splash hire".

First of all, don't attack my posts like that..

Secondly, disprove it if you feel the need to say I'm wrong...I don't claim to be a MSU fan, so I can see...Ole Miss and State already have trouble recruiting, but if OM got Dungy, he'd get every recruit in this State and he'd recruit well out of state...

As I'll state... I don't care who OM hires, but I do hope they hire someone succesful...But Dungy would hurt Mississippi State and Southern, and most people that don't have the maroon and white glasses on see that..

Ya know, he does do a lot of Charity work and OM would be a great one...LOL

the situation with the program and the fact that it is in the worst shape in the history of the school. They understand that it will take considerable time to recover. A new coach, whoever he is, will have a minimum of four or five years to build back. Obviously, by year four improvement would have to be made to go another yearbut I doubt that anybody would be too quick on the trigger to go through the process all over again.

Archie Manning has to have a pretty good perspective of where Ole Miss currently is and what it will take for them to get the most out of their program. Just like at State, Atlanta is the goal, as it should be. But realistically it's not going to happen on a regular basis, not with Alabama and LSU as national powers and with Auburn and Arkansas taking turns rising to the top of the polls occasionally.

Sure they would like to knock it out of the park when they announce their hire but Tony Dungy ain't coming to Oxford unless they move the Sunday Night Football studio to The Library.

I can see a Chizik stepping off the plane moment waiting to happen when they announce their new coach. If it ain't Dungy, Malzahn, Smart, or Leach, the majority of their fans will not be happy. As it's been said before on here, the biggest fear is that Ole Miss backs themselves into a good hire.

FWIW- Bruce Feldman tweeted tonight that "there may be some interest from Ole Miss in Kevin Sumlin, but the feeling is NOT mutual."

...when either MSU or OM is in the midst of a coaching search, the countless lies you are forced to read here become unbearable.

I remember when Croom left & MSU was looking for a new HC: There were more lies told here during the post-Croom/pre-Mullen window than is told in a Las Vegas singles bar at 1am.

First of all Usm's success has nothing to do with ole miss or States success. Usm rarely battles both schools for recruits and If Usm gets a recruit over State or Ole Miss, it's because they want to stay closer to home or have ****** grades. hiring Dungy won't have any affect on that. As for Dungy sweeping up the state with recruits and causing state to plummet is beyond a ridiculous statement. Are you saying this because he's black, ex-NFL headcoach, or have you seen his recruiting prowess in the NFL? We had a black head coach and it didnt help us in recruiting and seriously doubt Dungy will let Ole Miss boosters help his recruiting classes. The fact is If Dungy is hired, Ole Miss may get a couple of recruits because he's Tony Dungy but he's not going to have every single recruit in the state knocking his door down like you are implying.

I'm sorry. Mullen can't recruit against Nutt, and you think he can against Dungy...Seems illogical
