I hope this ends the OOC strength of schedule discussion, but I know it's not going to ever stop for some fans.

Its not hard to understand.

You can't do both:
  1. Schedule crap OOC SOS
  2. Lose to that crap OOC SOS

If we actually win OOC (haven't done it the last 2 years), then we easily make the tournament.

The schedule isn't a problem. It's losing to it. Let's have a clean OOC before worrying about upgrading.

The committee has now indicated that OOC SOS is a material consideration. We would be committing malpractice if we ignored them and continued to schedule SEVEN sub-300 teams.

I don’t mind 4 or 5 such cupcakes. I mean, everybody has them. But please not 7. We cannot afford to have our Team Sheet say 309 in the OOC SOS box. We’re just inviting more scrutiny at that point, and, if we have a debatable resume with little margin for error, giving a subjective committee ammunition to hose us.

As dumb as OOC SOS is as a datapoint, WE HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME AND SCHEDULE STRONGER.

Winning matters regardless of the schedule. Why Rutgers defeats Purdue on the road and can't beat Miami is hard to accept?

Just listened . Pike really must have been shocked. He was pretty confident we were getting in by the metrics. Even a day letter it seemed like he was broad sided by a bus.
Pike felt Michigan was win and in.
He didn’t seem too concerned with Out of conference schedule and kept saying we had a top 40 sked overall
Mad dog brought up the Ohio state screw job and how the committee was gonna acknowledge it and mentioned the Minnesota loss .
Pike very complimentary of painter , collins and Izzo.
Mad dog kept harping on Clemson not getting in and nc state in .

not trying to derail thread but do I understand correctly that the opponents someone plays greatly impacts their strength of schedule in the calculation, so not only are you picking some of these opponents based on playing them, you're now picking them because that opponent is going to be playing tough out of conf games so it will all be a trickle down process? So if you play some 150/200's level team but then somehow they decide to schedule Kansas, Duke, Alabama in their OOC then we will by default move up because that team will appear higher in their sos even if they lose all those games?

Pike also said Hofstra is good and they’re playing to show they belong too. 4K tickets have been sold . Team will play to get to Vegas.

Pike said he hopes to be breaking down game film, but still plans on watching March madness. He’s interested in uconn and his daughter’s lax team at unc??

Partially true. The committee needs to take into account that our conference schedule is longer and more difficult than other conferences

That's just their excuse this time. Next time it'll be another absurd excuse. I actually think they saw the team play one of our really bad halves and said...no way are they getting in. Once they decided it they just made up some excuses.. .Mag, poor recent stretch, etc.

Winner winner .

They were keeping us out and rationalized it with some BS they aren’t even supposed to use

As dumb as OOC SOS is as a datapoint, WE HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME AND SCHEDULE STRONGER.

The tournament is:
  • A TV show that generates billions for its rights holder

The tournament is not:
  • A single elimination contest for the country’s best basketball teams.
The term you will see instead of “best” is “most deserving” - and the NCAA comes up with the criteria to decide who deserves it (and doesn’t specify how the criteria will be applied or not applied).

While it is supremely logical for a tournament of the best teams to only consider a team’s total schedule strength, the NCAA wants to improve entertainment potential more than it cares about leaving out the 40 or 41st best team in the country. It would prefer a few more mid-majors with a shot at an upset to a few more competent but unspectacular high majors.

To do that, they have to give the mid-majors a chance to qualify under the criteria, and to do that they incentivized high majors to schedule them in the OOC.

That’s why OOC has such an absurd value. It doesn’t have much to do with whether you are one of the best teams, it has to do with mid-majors being offered the chance to show that they are among the most deserving.

You have to take that into account and schedule accordingly. Just like RPI, that can be managed.

They probably saw the last minute of the minnesota game . And last year they probably saw the Harper shot

If they'd beaten the likes of Seton Hall, Minnesota, and Temple, and hadn't been robbed against Ohio State, they're in easily.

Listened to Russo at the beginning of his show. Unloaded on the committee for not putting us in. Said he's usually the guy that is against having all of these power conference teams in but ridiculous that Mountain West had 4 teams and rattled off all of the wins we had against tournament teams.

Plus - why do you need more than 2 in the 200+ NET range?
Net: Columbia 334, Sacred Heart 326, Rider 217, CCSU 343, Bucknell 295, Coppin 328

I can see 2 of those to start the season, but the rest of those games were a complete waste. More garbage minutes than competitive minutes. What does the team get out of playing those.

Swap 4 of those 200+ Nets out for games like Temple 125, Umass Lowell 119, Wake 90
And of course, take care of business and win them all

The biggest story of this year is lost opportunity
Win those 3 you list plus Nebraska and this is a 23-win team with nobody sweating yesterday

Back in the Bannon years Chris was like a local Andy Katz on M and the MD during the Big East Tournament a couple years. actually ran into him at MSG one game and chatted a second.
And it wasn't just to offset the big guy and his anti rutgas agenda due to St. Johns relationship.

They were without Paul for Miami
Started Hyatt in his place and Simpson played 10 minutes
36 mins for Cliff, 35 for Cam and Caleb, 34 for Paul and 32 for Hyatt
Not our coaching staff's finest hour - and I think they're excellent

Paul didn't play at all vs. Caine's.
Cam, Hyatt, and mag went a combined 9 of 39 and team only took 4 Foul shots whole game.

They just have way better athletes. At there place again.. shocker. That one doesn't bother me .

For the people who keep saying "don't lose to middleing teams", that's just not realistic. There will always be teams that unexpectedly jump up and bite better teams. Temple beat us, but they also beat Houston. NC State only had one Q1 win, but they simply smoked Duke in that win.

It is rare for a team to have a truly unblemished record, even those at the top of the bracket. The trick is to mitigate those blemishes.... lose to team 62 not 93, get a 4-point win against team 230 on an off night instead of losing a tight match to team 125, get shellacked by a top 25 team when you have players out injured instead of losing a close one to team 100, etc

That starts with purging the OOC slate of teams in that 70-150 danger range.
