Polk County to 1A, Chase Appeal Denied, 7 Classifications in 2025?

Someone mentioned the possibility of Polk dropping back to 1A on the 1A board and I could definitely see that, but I am definitely surprised that Chase is trying to drop down with them. Has their enrollment dropped that low? Seems like odd timing now that they have turned things around in football but this might be a decision based on the other sports.

I do get it though if you're a Friends team who can have good players every now and then. You still wouldn't want to be stuck in a classification with Shelby Reidsville maiden Monroe East Surrey

They just need to go to five or six classifications that way you can better align schools by their Adm. But honestly probably won't make any difference if you're stuck in a classification with a powerhouse program.
Wish we'd go to 5 classes for sure

I noticed Asheville and AC making appeals also
Yeah I didn’t mention that since they are 4A schools. Presumably they would just stay where they are at since they are already in a 3A/4A conference, it would just go from three 3A schools and four 4A’s to five and two if both requests are granted.

Yep. They should be 3A if it went off enrollment alone. I don’t even understand how they do it now. Im not that smart but I don’t see how a schools success history (state cup points) or how much aid they have received impacts how fair competition is. ADMs should be the only thing that classifies a school IMO. It’s simple, it’s fair. All this other bull jive is just that.

I heard another school that is in our conference appealing to be dropped to 1A soon. It’s happening all over.

There needs to be the same number of classifications in all sports. Not fair to say volleyball, to have 6 champions in football and only 4 in volleyball. That was part of the reason we got rid of subdivision. Football got to have 8 state champions but the other sports only got 4. Now do I like the idea of football only conferences. In a perfect world to me..... we would have 6 classes. Football only conferences based only on enrollment (no split leagues) bc travel on a Friday night is not as big of a deal. The other sport conferences would be based on enrollment and geography. (split leagues ok). This would help with travel distances on a week night for other sports.

I had mentioned this a while back that Polk was wanting to go back to 1a and they are really a 1a school. Now chase ???? But the other school that I’m sure will be appealing is East surry they were at 588 adm. Back to Polk tho we are and have always been a 1a school. But the conference is what I have had questions about … where would Polk go conference wise ? But if Chase’s numbers are really that low (I don’t see how because they have always been in the 750ish range) a 1/2 spilt would work …. I guess

So what I found after a quick search is Polks at 619 and Chase is 622… I was told that Polk is back into the high 500’s tho. So with that in mind Chase dropped exactly 100 students cause they were at 722 ….. we shall see how that goes
East surry is listed as having 564 adm

The sucky thing is, some of these schools will win their appeal for no reason, and some will lose their appeal for no reason. It's just whatever the NCHSAA feels at the time. If the ADM's of Polk and Chase are correct at 619 and 622 respectively and one of them wins the appeal while the other doesn't, that wouldn't be right.

Ask Tuscola about that one. Last mid alignment appeal they were denied a move down to 2A despite having fewer students than Pisgah who was already 2A at the time. I’m glad they accepted Burns’ appeal but apparently they denied Tuscola’s because the population in that area was more likely to grow if I recall correctly. That was horse crap what they did to them. They even appealed again in the spring to no avail.

Lots of suggestions and possibilities. All I know is the current method, having to win six playoff games to win a state title, is beyond ridiculous. Can't understand what was wrong with the eight classifications (A, AA) system. Considering the number of high schools in NC, I'd say eight is about the right number for the public schools. Back in the day, there used to be a Western, Midwestern, Mideastern, and Eastern "state champion" in each of the four classifications (maybe just two for 1A?), plus the WNCHSAA champion. That's too many, but eight is not. No system is completely fair relative to classification metrics, ADM and other considerations, but having eight options would present a better chance to get it at least closer to fair than having only four options.

Agreed. For football, 6 is entirely too many games. That is a 16 game season for the winner. The majority of teams in college play 12-13 games. If we want to talk about safety and football, the lesser games, the better. Especially during the 1st round of the playoffs where most of the games are blowouts by teams that are bigger, stronger and faster than their opposition. That's where injuries can occur.

Burns petitioned back in I believe 18 to be moved from 3a to 2a due to a drop of nearly 900 or so students and won... Wasn't there another local school that petitioned at the same time but was refused.. Was it chase then too or I may be mistaken

Edit: Yeah tuscola was who it was not chase

Question....With this "new system" they put into place to put teams in different classifications based on several factors, I wonder how close Shelby was in going to 3A? They are good-to-great at basically every sport (with a few exceptions).

Football - obviously good
Basketball (both boys/girsl) - good
Soccer (both) - good
Tennis & Golf - good
Track - good
Baseball - yuck (still wonder what happened there. They used to be fantastic)

I guess their ADM's were so low that the success of all of the sports didn't make a difference.

Looks like Shelby is 811,Burns is at 915
Since 2020 to now looks like every school in the area has lost 50-100 kids

Looked at Reidsville just for fun ….677 …

Shelby is good across the board except for baseball and softball.

That's not why we got rid of the split. We got ride of the split to put pressure on certain schools to vote for adding a additional class.

Those were regional titles your referencing.
That was the 60s

We played 16 before. 11 regular 5 playoffs.
Now it's 10 regular 6 playoffs
