  • “Ranking” is a synonym for “poll,” which I’m pretty sure is derogatory term for someone from Poland

  • As long as TnT, TaTo, and DT’s teams are ranked below us I don’t care how low PSU is ranked.

Doesn't @Wrestleknownothing know something about which ranking is most accurate, or is that the other person who pops in only just before nationals?

Has @Wrestleknownothing created a measure for outcome prediction accuracy and determined how bad they are in mid-December and monthly through mid-March?
There are some issues here. The ranking services claim these are not predictions and therefore any error in making predictions is intentional. Meh.

But let's say they are rankings/ratings then the only true way to measure them is based on next results. How do today's rankings predict each wrestler's next match?

That is why I only look at this at year end when I have intermat, wrestlestat, flo, coaches' poll, and seeds all lined up in a row that I can then compare to tournament results. Having larger sets to compare against each other (both predictions and outcomes) makes for better analysis.

As I like to say about all my numbers, they are all wrong but I am right on average.

I did look at this at the end of last season and if memory serves (it never serves at my age) I believe the coaches' poll was more accurate than the others. I will see if I can find that.

There is a guy who pops into intermat periodically with what he calls Pablo Wrestling Rankings. He has designed them to be used for predictions. I think he even quotes stats about their success rate. Maybe take a look over there?

I like rankings because, they show you people to look for and watch that without rankings it would be much harder for any fan to follow the sport.

That is also why I dont ***** about how people do them they are really just a rough draft of what is currently going on in that sport.

Those who are offended by wrestling rankings should remember their primary purpose. Rankings, which more often than not prove to be wrong, give Iowa fans a false sense of hope leading into the NCAA tournament. This sets the stage for their inevitable disappointment, after which guys like johnstownsteel have an opportunity to goad them incessantly on the HR message board.

End of year Coaches Rank matters, because it's a critical piece of NCAA seeding criteria (even though that's dumb and should be changed).

Early season rankings matter only as a rough guide of who should be how good. Take it more seriously, that's a you problem.
