Nope. Same with Lanning, Day, Freeman.
Meanwhile, Scott Frost was a head coach before Nebraska. As was Napier.
Not to say hiring head coaches is bad. Just shouldn’t be a prerequisite.

), and Franklin fed it preseason by saying that this was the best PSU team in his tenure. That quickly proved to be incorrect. Flaws were evident in the first three games. Then, there was the close loss to oregon, another game falling short against a top-ten team. And then they were thoroughly embarrassed by ucla and northwestern. The team was a mess.It’s one thing for a team to simply be overrated (though Franklin still pumped up the hype). The product on the field strongly suggests it was more than that. Poor tackling, playing Singleton in key situations when Allen was clearly playing better, Allar looking nothing like a 5-star, top NFL draft pick, poor offensive line play, poorly timed and executed trick plays (WILDCAT.
), settling for field goals time and again, etc. Something was very wrong. We may never know all of it, but Kraft was left with no choice but to take action mid-season.
You have a point, but I also think he has low downside. At a minimum, he wins all of the games James would/should have won, including Homecoming vs NW
Given CC’s age, Kraft should also task him with developing his coaching successor.
For what it's worth Terry Smith may have a better shot than some think if they can't land their top guy.
As an aside and may play well for Terry Smith down the road, PS supposedly is not using a search firm this time around. An in-house comity has been formed of the President of the University Pat Kraft and what was called several football influencers as well as some others who's names or positions weren't mentioned. Take it for what it's worth.
We're Penn State. I see no way that Terry Smith would end up getting this job.
If Terry is able to win 1 vs Indiana and osu and the team looks much improved the rest of the season, he is our guy. The entire PSU family would rally behind him.
I just feel like if Terry had aspirations of being a HC, he would have already pursued it. Maybe, that job being PSU is different though.He doesn’t want to lose his current job if someone else is named?
Breneman was on XM yesterday and said that PSU has endless resources and no names are off the table. I’m not sure how much knowledge of the interworkings of the PSU athletics department he actually has though.
Ahhh, he's undefeated, Number 3 in the Country with a win over Oregon in their House which no other team has been able to do in ages, went to the CFP in his first year, and has a legitimate shot at a National Championship THIS year..........FOR INDIANA!!!!
He'll probably have a better shot at a National Championship THIS year at INDIANA than any tomato can we end up hiring next.

What is your basis for saying that? If he turns this season around, he will have earned the job.
From a betting standpoint, I agree w/ some of the comments on Adam's X post - Cig and Manny Diaz have the most value on that list at those odds.
So tell me which coach has never been upset before.
Not trying to be a jerk but there is no perfect candidate. They’ve all been upset, had poor clock management, blew a big game, miss on recruits, etc. My point was that Freeman has done a tremendous job and got a team into the NC game just last year. His team has 2 losses to top 5 teams by a total of 5 or so points this year. The guy may not be perfect but Urban and Saban were upset too at some points in their career.
Feel free to write in too; use whatever criteria you choose (most likely, personal preference, etc.). One vote.

I voted for Matt Rhule because he would probably stick around if things went well and not bail, and also because he might be the one guy that would be able to work with that a$$hole Kraft. But I am also A-OK with giving Terry Smith a chance. My guess is he would be just as good as some of those other guys that were mentioned, and he would work his a$$ off.
Because the stated objective is to win titles. Terry Smith isn't the answer. Some want him because of ties to Paterno and Penn State. That's a mistake. Just like Rhule is or Golden would have been 12-14 years ago. They need to start fresh. That means no one on Franklin's staff. If the new coach wants to keep him as an assistant that would be great. He's the only one I'd consider

Hire Saban as a (well paid) consultant for a new coach, especially if that coach is a newbie like Terry or Stein to give them training wheels for a bit.
