What makes anyone think Drinkwitz would leave Missouri for PSU?
Missouri itself and likely Florida when that opening occurs will throw big money at him. He is earning recent success, but when you look behind the record, he’s not winning big games either.

Tengwall recently tweeted that nobody knows at this point - and I tend to believe it. I can’t even imagine outside of initial feelers, any coach/agent has had any formal discussions.

Zack Smith (former Urban staffer) said on his podcast yesterday that Urban is interested and has even told Kraft as much. Smith also says he has a single mid level donor friend at PSU and the board and “older donors” all want Rhule.

IMO, I don’t want either. Urban hasn’t coached in the new era and Rhule is basically the white James Franklin in big games. If this is the scenario, why not hire Urban and if it fails give Rhule a shot in the two years? Urban will need a proven GM.

Sounds like Kraft has been able to rally the donor base, which is great news. And that probably includes the Paterno-era money that was lost during the scandal. And doesn’t sound like they liked CJF. The Rhule stuff might just be a return to tradition.

If anyone cares, I’m sticking with my two favorite candidates - Brent Key and Joe Brady. I like Key’s record vs ranked opponents (7-1) and his OL and run game. Brady brings the young energy with the QB development reputation.

Feel free to write in too; use whatever criteria you choose (most likely, personal preference, etc.). One vote.

Also, thanks for the memories Coach Franklin.

When Drinkwitz moved into the top tier I knew someone had moved off. Goodbye Cignetti. Is Elko now the top pursuit?

I also like Brent Key (GT).

That is no longer a realistic option, unless Penn State decides to become Northwestern or Vanderbilt. The pressure these coaches are under to win is enormous, possibly more than they feel in the NFL. The recruiting is nonstop, going after HS kids and then keeping your kids from going into the portal or finding gems that have gone into the portal. The burnout in these coaching jobs is going to get worse. If these coaches are making upwards of $10 million a year, in a mere 8 years they're going to haul down close to $100 million. They can work 8 years and then retire, do sports shows and such. The days of coaches staying at a school forever (e.g. - Paterno, Ferentz, Bowden) are over.
Exactly what I keep telling people. I think the 10 year mark will be stopping point for most or where they are most effective and then wear out and are fired or leave shortly after 10 years. Franklin looked gassed in his last presser. As you said the non stop recruiting, people forget and others joke about how he takes helicopters to high school games on friday nights and weekdays. That wears on you, you are traveling non stop and meeting with recruits, families, high school coaching staffs, maintaining your own program and keeping that pointed up, trying have what little time you have with your own family at home. The pressure to win with fan bases, administration, the AD, the list goes on and on. They know what they are stepping into but it's also why they get paid the amounts they do. Football drives the bus at most colleges.

I am starting to see rumblings and a little smoke towards Brady. If its just heresay or there is real interest there on both sides only time will tell.

The Pegula connection there is interesting. You wonder if he walked into Brady’s office and talked to him about the opening. I wonder what is more important to Pegula, his alma mater or his NFL team. Brady is a high risk high reward type of candidate.

Several have mentioned Drinkwitz going to Flirida after Napier is fired.
Florida has become a sinkhole the admin has made amateurish decisions, but I guess today it's all about the money. I doubt Florida could outbid PS.

Maybe Drinkwitz just wants to be in the SEC.

Does anyone know the average tenure of HC's once hired? 5 years maybe?

I don't think there are any pro coaches on the list or assistant coaches, not saying it won't get to that, but I hope not.

Kraft said one of the criteria was that the person love college football. IMO if you love college football you're not in the pro's he also said you have to have success managing NIL and the transfer portal those are not the responsibilities of an assistant coach or coordinator. Just my thoughts.

What tradition would we be returning to exactly?

Are the rumblings/smoke an offshore betting market that takes small bets for publicity or actual smoke/rumblings?

U lost me on that little piece of mental gymnastics - time to step away from the keyboard man
Not sure why you're taking issue with this or think it's anything other than reality but this is why O'Brien referenced a cult like mentality regarding Paterno. Even comments that aren't criticism people take drastic offense to and respond as you did above.

So based on this, your criteria is Kraft can hire only coaches who have won a previous NC (upsets don’t matter there) or a coach that has never been upset, but hasn’t won a NC?

Guess it’s Dabo, Kirby and Day, or bring back Saban or Urban. None of those seem likely to me.

Leaving you with Option 2 - not sure no coach hasn’t been upset.

I still stand by the idea that Freeman is a home run candidate for all the reasons I listed earlier. He is not CJF (won ‘big’ games), his recruiting outpaces PSUs (by a widening margin), and he seems to be the recruiter/game manager/face of program while hiring good coordinators and position coaches to do the coaching (Seider for one).

Dismissing him as a candidate because his team lost to 1 non-P4 school each of the last 2 years seems shortsighted since his team played for a Natty last year after beating PSU and having a harder path to the NC than our draw was. And he stands a good chance of making the playoffs again this year, if they win Saturday night. I dislike ND as much as anybody, but I’m not letting that distract from the idea that hiring Freeman seems like a huge win for Kraft if he can pull it off.

Has anybody also considered the Singleton drop off could be somewhat related to Seider leaving? Not sure - just speculation.
Freeman would be great no doubt, but is he a realistic Candidate or is his agent starting rumors in order to get a Cignetti like contract extension?

Key is surely intriguing, but he is coaching at his alma mater, is from the south, is in a conference where it will be far easier to be successful long term than the B10, and has GT doing extremely well. Hard to believe, I know, but hiring a southern boy for the job at PSU is not the fit people think. Brady is surely an excellent choice, but I do not believe he is coming back to coach college, even though the compensation disparity between him being an OC in the pros and a HC in college is pretty big (college HC make a lot more). But the million dollar question is whether he is the kind to cater to 18 year olds. Types like Saban saw the writing on the wall with NIL and said, "I am out."

As Zak said, Urban would be awful in today's climate. He has zero experience with NIL and his personality would not resonate with today's recruits. Urban was an excellent coach at Florida (and OSU) but he was brutal, and I mean brutal. Today's semi-pro players will not put up with this style of coaching, in my opinion.

I like Matt Campbell if he makes the move from Iowa State. Not a sexy hire, but the guy is a true ball coach.
