If you’ve never been to Jamaica, you can’t understand how unprepared they are for something like this. I can foresee a huge loss of life.
I've been in the eyewall of quite a few hurricanes over the past 30 years (by choice). Nothing this strong, but I've taken on 7 majors during that time. I have to say, being in the eyewall of ANY major hurricane is a power unlike anything on earth. It's not a power I would want to take on beside the ocean in a poorly built structure.

They have a very strong "god will protect us" mentality, which is a good thing to have as long as you match that faith with strong, well thought out decisions of your own free will. That second part does not seem to be the case in Jamaica, or in many other lower income type areas in the US and especially in the Caribbean. God will not just magically protect you in areas prone to 15+ storm surge and no escape route. It still amazes me every single time to witness the raw power and just how fast water rises around the eyewall, and it's a type of power everyone needs to witness (in a safe manner). I think it would save lives in times like these.

I'm almost more worried about mudslides than 150+ sustained and storm surge though. Hope they make it through.

Something that really amazed me about Jamaica that totally opposite of most other places. In the US and most places that I’ve visited, wealthy people live on or near the coast and poorer people live inland. In Jamaica the more wealthy live in actual homes in the hills and mountains. The poorest of the poor live in concrete block and corrugated tin shacks right along the coast.

There won't be a single thing higher than 4 ft after it's over. Immense tragedy taking place now.

Latest NHC advisory shows it is moving at only 3 MPH. It seems uncommon for a storm that strong to move that slow. Seems like it will drop an unbelieveable amount of rain.

Going to be bad. Jamaica's already a violent place. Throw in the desperation that is going to come from this and it could get a lot worse. Like bad enough that it's hard to get aid in. Hope I'm overly pessimistic and people there surprise me.

Also going to be bad because I assume tourism is going to go to zero for a while and that's a big chunk of their GDP and jobs.

I have a sister in law and brother in law leaving out of Fort Lauderdale either late today or early tomorrow morning on a ten day cruise of the Caribbean. How would you like to be on that trip.

I did not know there was a mathematical limit for how strong a hurricane could get.

What happens if it gets stronger than that?

That's why you always get trip insurance this time of year during hurricane season

Went to Jamaica on a cruise about 12 years ago. Did I go to one of the falls, one of the resorts, or one of excursions offered? No… my dumb аss wanted to “experience the culture”, so we went to the handmade market. They basically put you on a bus and drive you through the most impoverished communities I’ve ever seen in person and take you to the market, which is also surrounded by extreme poverty. Then they take you to Margaritaville and the like to wait on the bus that takes you back to the ship. You wouldn’t know being at the resorts how bad sнit is like 2 miles away. Everybody was just out there having fun. I couldn’t unsee what I had just seen though. I was shook and had nightmares about what I saw for weeks after that.

All that to say, there’s no way those people have safe shelter. The loss of life is going to be devastating.

Last I heard, there were sustained winds of 175, gusts to 220. Pretty sure that's about the same as Camile was in the late August 1969.

Devastation in Jamaica will be almost total.

Going somewhere that is truly poor changes you. While I haven't had nightmares, Egypt did that to me.

We really don’t have true poverty in the United States. I’ve never been to Jamaica, but I’ve seen similar in Mexico.

In what I think is a first...a hurricane hunter plane had to abort the mission. The turbulence was exceeding the plane's limit.
That thing hasn’t had much atmospheric hinderance and a lot of favorable conditions. At last look, it has a sustained wind of 175 mph. That is the strongest Katrina got in the Gulf before slightly weakening while coming on shore. And this hurricane is not far from landfall on Jamaica.

The Weather Channel is saying sustained winds of 180 now. I don't think they've mentioned the gusts. 896 millibars central pressure, so think they said it's a top 5 Atlantic hurricane.

892 millibars now. 3rd lowest pressure in an Atlantic hurricane, maybe the strongest ever in the Caribbean? Looks like it's going to cross at the western end of Jamaica, sparing Kingston from the center. Probably still a lot of lean-to shacks in that area though. And I believe the tallest mountains are in that area.

Hopefully it makes the righthand, eastern turn after getting thru Cuba and doesn't head into the Gulf.

It’s going to turn NE tonight and go through the Bahamas. Will be a Cat 1 by then. Mountains of Cuba will tear it apart.

Fortunately this storm is very compact so not the entire island of Jamaica will get the catastrophic damage. Western side of the island is going to be rough.

It takes a ballsy pilot and crew to fly into something like that. But, how does it compare with an airliner flying from Atlanta to LA into a 200 mph jet stream? Maybe it's a function of turbulence and the near sharp cutoff of wind from the eye-wall with fierce winds to the eye with almost calm winds.
