I've been in the eyewall of quite a few hurricanes over the past 30 years (by choice). Nothing this strong, but I've taken on 7 majors during that time. I have to say, being in the eyewall of ANY major hurricane is a power unlike anything on earth. It's not a power I would want to take on beside the ocean in a poorly built structure. If you’ve never been to Jamaica, you can’t understand how unprepared they are for something like this. I can foresee a huge loss of life.
Sounds like fun to meI have a sister in law and brother in law leaving out of Fort Lauderdale either late today or early tomorrow morning on a ten day cruise of the Caribbean. How would you like to be on that trip.
Then the model will have to be adjusted.I did not know there was a mathematical limit for how strong a hurricane could get.
What happens if it gets stronger than that?
That's why you always get trip insurance this time of year during hurricane seasonI have a sister in law and brother in law leaving out of Fort Lauderdale either late today or early tomorrow morning on a ten day cruise of the Caribbean. How would you like to be on that trip.
A tear in the time space continuumI did not know there was a mathematical limit for how strong a hurricane could get.

Holy molyIn what I think is a first...a hurricane hunter plane had to abort the mission. The turbulence was exceeding the plane's limit.
You've obviously never been to Jamaica*There won't be a single thing higher than 4 ft after it's over. Immense tragedy taking place now.
And another one is in there now. I can't imagine the pucker factor. In what I think is a first...a hurricane hunter plane had to abort the mission. The turbulence was exceeding the plane's limit.
Stuff like this is why I never plan vacations.I have a sister in law and brother in law leaving out of Fort Lauderdale either late today or early tomorrow morning on a ten day cruise of the Caribbean. How would you like to be on that trip.
I saw that movie. The USS Nimitz would have smoked the entire Japanese invasion fleet.A tear in the time space continuum
Going somewhere that is truly poor changes you. While I haven't had nightmares, Egypt did that to me.Went to Jamaica on a cruise about 12 years ago. Did I go to one of the falls, one of the resorts, or one of excursions offered? No… my dumb аss wanted to “experience the culture”, so we went to the handmade market. They basically put you on a bus and drive you through the most impoverished communities I’ve ever seen in person and take you to the market, which is also surrounded by extreme poverty. Then they take you to Margaritaville and the like to wait on the bus that takes you back to the ship. You wouldn’t know being at the resorts how bad sнit is like 2 miles away. Everybody was just out there having fun. I couldn’t unsee what I had just seen though. I was shook and had nightmares about what I saw for weeks after that.
All that to say, there’s no way those people have safe shelter. The loss of life is going to be devastating.
We really don’t have true poverty in the United States. I’ve never been to Jamaica, but I’ve seen similar in Mexico.Went to Jamaica on a cruise about 12 years ago. That thing hasn’t had much atmospheric hinderance and a lot of favorable conditions. At last look, it has a sustained wind of 175 mph. That is the strongest Katrina got in the Gulf before slightly weakening while coming on shore. And this hurricane is not far from landfall on Jamaica. In what I think is a first...a hurricane hunter plane had to abort the mission. The turbulence was exceeding the plane's limit.
The Weather Channel is saying sustained winds of 180 now. I don't think they've mentioned the gusts. 896 millibars central pressure, so think they said it's a top 5 Atlantic hurricane. That thing hasn’t had much atmospheric hinderance and a lot of favorable conditions. It’s going to turn NE tonight and go through the Bahamas. Will be a Cat 1 by then. Mountains of Cuba will tear it apart.892 millibars now. 3rd lowest pressure in an Atlantic hurricane, maybe the strongest ever in the Caribbean? Looks like it's going to cross at the western end of Jamaica, sparing Kingston from the center. Probably still a lot of lean-to shacks in that area though. And I believe the tallest mountains are in that area.
Hopefully it makes the righthand, eastern turn after getting thru Cuba and doesn't head into the Gulf.
Does a lack of hurricanes/storms make any subsequent ones stronger?Super favorable conditions and an untapped fuel source with the warm waters. We’ve had no real tropical activity the entire summer in that area.
Hurricanes and tropical storms typically leave cooler water behind. Not sure how much energy that sucks out for future storms.Does a lack of hurricanes/storms make any subsequent ones stronger?
