Ugh...CHARTER schools are PUBLIC. Damn you guys are full of stupidity.
Stupidity is traditional publics playing these "public" charters with 25 mile radius to expose their best kids to be recruited, oops, I mean to go into the "lottery". Charters belong by themselves as they are not bound by the same rules as traditional high schools. Spin it how you want, but facts are they can get kids from 25 miles and tend to get the taller bball players, state quality wrestlers, 90 MPH baseball pitchers and others like that. Then they chest bump and beat on their chest like they did something beating a bunch of hard working home grown kids with an all-star team from 2-3 counties.

After coming to the NCHSAA from the NCISAA in 2006, Bishop girls won every basketball State Championship from around 2005 to 2013, 9 State Championships without losing one and Winston Salem Prep took over for a few years after 2013 with both playing in the NWC.

Mount Airy girls won the State Championships in 2016 & 2017.

They have not done nearly as well in football and in the same football confrence with WSP & Corvian Community but they keep trying.

The big wrestling/baseball charter in the Asheboro area actually has access to players from, I think, seven different counties, including all of Randolph. They have a middle school team now in several sports. In the early stages a lot of the local middles refused to play them. During the past four years however with the high school playing in PAC7 the middle schools have all been playing each other in sports besides football. Like baseball and wrestling…
So, let’s just say, there have been a few lottery winners from some of those teams…

During the run of 9 championships they didn't even win the conference in 4 of those 9 years. They wouldn't have won those 9 in a row but for a massive joke job by the school that you support.

Why didn't they then?
So many from the NWC and other posts were complaining, and they knew they didn't have to win the conference to keep winning. From what I was hearing, the Bishop girl players were getting upset over all the negative talk on here, so winning the state was more important than winning the conference; they were that far above everyone else. Just a lot of talk and complaints going on with them winning the State every year for their first 9 years. 1A basketball board back then stayed really hot and I am just going on all the talk going on those 9 years and then it kinda turned to WSPrep for a few years !

I do wish it had stayed 4 boards for 1A through 4A and not as it is now, 1 board for all of them !

Please stop this nonsense.... over a 3 year span (09-10, 10-11 and 11-12) Bishop girls lost to Mt. Airy girls 7 of the 9 games they played. Not one Bishop player was ever "upset over all the negative talk on here". No one except internet keyboard warriors with outsized egos pay any attention to what we post here.

Bishop did, so what's your point? and only because Mt. Airy choked.
My point is a Private school that would have some advantages in where kids can live and go to school may have took a few of those Ships from a public school. Private school just imo prob should play in the Independent. Don't get all riled up just my opinion.

Bishop won them because they were getting players from cities only 10 miles from Kernersville: Winston, Greensboro, and High Point, whose counties Guilford and Forsyth have about 1 million people. Unlike Charter schools, a private school does not have that 25-mile radius. Charter & Private schools keep growing and hopefully, they will be put in a playoff together. Probably be sooner since they are growing in football. I am not sure how the 8 classifications will affect the playoffs in the next few years but it is going to be interesting.

Even now when you open their website this message pops up saying we want students for the 2025-2026 year but it was said back when they won all those championships that they got their students from feeder Catholic schools. This will only pop up once in 24 hours so read it when it pops up.

Applications are Open!

For one Catholic student going to Bishop the cost is $12,000/yr. Just imagine multiple kids at the same time. For non-Catholic students the cost is $17,000/yr. In addition to the cost non-Catholic kids are subject to the same religious studies as the Catholic kids which perhaps impacts a decision on whether or not to send your kid there.. The notion that Bishop has 1 million people to draw from is not reality. No one cares in our legislature about any sort of "level playing field" for high school athletics whether it's private, charter, traditional public with strict transfer rules or traditional public with lenient transfer rules. You're tilting at windmills...

Bishop about page, Home | About
Welcome to Bishop!
Founded in 1959, Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School is proud to be the largest non-public high school in North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad. Located just minutes from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, our 42-acre campus offers a safe, nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and spiritually. Through exceptional academics, extracurricular activities, athletics, and a deep commitment to spiritual growth grounded in the Gospel, we provide an outstanding high school experience.

It looks like close to 1 million to me with a total of approximately the 2 counties totaling a population of 923,889 thousand. Being a private school they can also go beyond those 2 countries as far as they want to get the best of the best.

BM 9 girls titles including 2023. WS Prep 6 boys titles. Wilson Prep 3 of the last four in boys basketball. UCA has won titles in both baseball and wrestling the last few years. 3-4 other charters or privates have won titles in various sports the last 5-8 years. Cardinal Gibbons 12 girls volleyball titles, 13 girls cross country titles, 2021 football title, three straight lacrosse titles and multiple others. They both have a decided edge and should not be competing with traditional public schools.

You are saying the very same thing that others have said about Bishop for the last 20 years. Gibbons and Charlotte Catholic have been members for close to 60 years, nothing new there either. None of the powers that be care a hoot about what guys on a internet message board think is fair or not about the Catholic schools or public charter schools. Nor do they care with the Mt. Airy's of the state who have used lenient district and county rules to run up "advantaged" banners over those years. There's never been a level playing field, not in the past, not now and not in the future.

They do now, TD. Our state legislature provides vouchers that can be used at private schools.
So, all that does is allow them to get more students, including sports, if they can give scholarships. They should keep getting better students and do well the next few years in 2A with 477 ADM.

It allows families to take tax dollars and send their kids to private schools and there is no income cap.

These schools also have no accountability to anyone other than the ones that run them.

While Bishop is a great high school and many of these are, many are paddy cake factories taking advantage of the system with no oversight.

Thanks for the link. There is 2 schools within a mile of my house that I didn’t even know about and I drive past them almost everyday. I hate to say this, I am not totally against vouchers, but I do believe there are many schools taking advantage of the system. There should be more accountability.

I agree, there has to be some level of accountability and I think you'll see more private schools pop up with this system to take advantage of the funds. But these same people will complain about a single mother of 3 getting food stamps.

I personally think private schools should be responsible for funding their own scholarships, especially ones with large endowments.

They haven't "stolen" anything from anyone. There's no "P" in NCHSAA.
Sure they did! Keep looking through those rose colored glasses! You probably had a kid on the teams that knocked Robbinsville girls out in back to back seasons. They took one away from Murphy in 20/21 and another from Robbinsville in 22/23! Private and public are two very, very different things! We all know how they manipulate the travel ball system as well out there! So stole? Absolutely!

I bet if certain people will look at that list they'd be upset to know certain types of schools are getting millions of their tax dollars.

Click the link and look at the new school that this place has just built. It was already the newest school in Randolph County and had nice facilities and space already. While other traditional schools need major repair, replacement or rebuilding. UCA and other charters get this! Privates getting vouchers in the 100's of thousands pulling kids from these schools. Just a shining example of our tax dollars being funneled to these types of schools instead of taking care of others that have much bigger needs than a new building to replace an already new building.

WOW, Mount Airy has been in the same building for 73 years this year. It was built in 1952 but has slowly had some major improvements over the years, and these private and charter schools have all these newer schools.
