Question for the board: Why will MSU be better or worse in 2012?

I guess this doesn't really make us "better".... but our schedule gets easier, so the appearance of our team will be better (assuming we win the home games). We get Auburn, TN, and aTm at home. Assuming we win 2 of those 3, we have a pretty good shot at getting 8 wins, possibly 9. I'm counting UK and OM as wins (although the OM is a wildcard with new coaches, as well as the 4 OOC games.

Reasons we might be worse:
Losing Relf
Young Offensive Line
Losing Ballard
Breaking in a new DT for Cox

Reasons we might be better:
I expect our younger offensive line guys to be much improved. Clausell, Robinson, Day all got lots of good experience.
Autry should be an immediate pass-rush threat that we haven't had under Mullen
Maybe Prescott (I'm stretching here obviously) is the real deal. Maybe he can come in and win the job after a few games. I still think Tyler could win us 8 games, but he isn't going to beat an Alabama or LSU.

Maybe after Super Bulldog Weekend we'll be able to have a good discussion about how 2012 will look. I think one thing is for certain though, we need to find an Offensive identity. This year we had to keep flip flopping QB's and personel. At times we were a run oriented QB option team and at times we were a passing spread team. I think with Russell, and if we get Wallace (big if) then I think there is no doubt we will be more of a passing team. If we're going to be better next year I think we need to have one consistent Identity. </p>

we have 7 games to start the season where anything less than 6-1 would be a tad disappointing. After that, it's a crap shoot with a LSU, Bama, A&M, Ole Miss and Arkansas. I think we can beat A&M and Ole Miss.

QB- We will be better throwing the ball, but will have to change QB's to get running production...potentially the 2 best QB's we have had at State = push at worst<div>RB- we wont miss Ballard- we always seem to be solid here and have some good young RB's...Perkins can handle a few more carries as well - push</div><div>OL- should be improved with jucos and experience the young guys received...need Smith to return from injury = push</div><div>WR- everybody's back + redshirts = better</div><div>
</div><div>DL- not quite as good at DT but better at DE = push</div><div>LB- lots of players return with experience...Skinner and Lawrence are good SEC LB'ers = better</div><div>Secondary- lose Mitchell but return the rest + additions...Whitley could move to SS and be better than Mitchell was = better</div><div>
</div><div>Punter- same</div><div>Kicker- ?????</div>

based on the fact that we FINALLY have a deep threat in Morrow. Dak's better at making quicker reads from 1 to checkdown as a freshmen than Relf was as a Sr. Plus he's far faster than Relf in the scrambling dept as well. Tyler (hopefully) can only get better as a QB as well. But I see Dak being the starter before the year's out. We will NOT miss Vick that much. Nick's a DAMN good back & Robinson & Milton are nipping @ Perk's heels. We will miss Cox though. His loss will make an impact on our defense but I feel it's something that can be minimized (not completely overcome) with a damned good scheme (which I feel Wilson can come up with) and LB's that can play at a high level (which I don't know if we have, we'll see). But as far as our overall record we should be ALOT better. If Tyler Wilson goes draft I feel good about Arky, Auburn will be down plus we get both those games at home. I see us beating UK & UM as well as winning ALL OOC games. Might be the best chance for a good bowl in a LONG time.

Devon Bell has a cannon for a leg. If he can get the ball out of the end zone for some touch backs that will help a whole lot. Our kick offs killed us in the Auburn game. Had we been able to kick it out of the endzone for a touchback regularly we probably would have won that game. Which reminds me,I'm gladTre Mason didn't go to Ole Miss.

if Mullen does a good job we win 8 - 9 games. If he coaches about 25% of the time with his head firmly inserted in his *** like he did this year we win 6 - 7. With that schedule in his fourth year it`s time to roll.

yes, I think when its is all said and done, Dak Prescott will be MSUs version of Eli Manning.....dude is a stud, just hoping it translates to the game atmosphere....from all accounts I have read, he was the best QB on the team this year.....

and the flashes we saw of Nick Griffin, at not even a 100%, makes me think he could be one of the all time best as well.....put em together in the same backfield, we will have something special for the next 3 years....

DL will be young, but bringing in tons of talent....i think they will be inconsistent, but will get progressively better....

WR...I have high expectations for Joe Morrow, again, all accounts say he is a playmaker and should have been playing this year....

OL....I think will be enormously improved, but we gotta do something with Clausell.....guy got abused all year long.....

we will be better team and better record with schedule....Im thinking Jan 1 bowl game.....until saban and Miles and all their coaches retire, I don't think we stand a chance winning the west though...

The game is just very different for kickers. No tee on FGs and XPs, much narrower goal posts, a shorter tee on kickoffs and kick off from the 30 instead of the 40. Any1 of those is a big difference, but all 4 together is almost a completely different game. If he had accuracy issues in HS, then forget about him ever kicking FGs in college.

Including Ballard who probably gets drafted later rounds, that will be our last 3 starting RB's to get drafted in the NFL. We just plug another one in and go. I think Griffin will be 100% next year and him, Perk, Robinson, and Milton will be a very solid backfield.

QB: I think we end up better here. I don't think Russell is going to need to run as much because of his threat to pass. if he can hit on some of the deep balls he missed on last year, this offense will do some special things.
RB: I agree with you Coach. Ballard, while very integral in our success, will be able to be replaced by our stable of backs. His production will not be missed because I think we can duplicate it.
WR: Should be the best we've ever had. Morrow, Bump, Heavens, Clark, Smith. Solid group right there. I'm hoping an offseason of Russell throwing to these guys gets us going in the passing game.
OL: I think better here. Holley replaces Day at center, Siddoway hopefully replaces Clausell/Carmon at LT, Gabe Jackson, hopefully Tobias Smith healthy, then the battle between Muniz and Clausell at RT. I think this ends up being a solid group if we can stay healthy. We can handle one injury, but more than that will grind us to a halt.

DL: DT will have a ton of young talent, but overall not as good because Cox was a beast. But I don't think it will be a weak spot next year with Autry in and Eulls getting another year. There will be some chances for our young guys like Jones, Virges, and a few of our young DEs to step up and show us what they can do.
LB: Better here. Most improved unit on the entire field, and this year they won't be overlooked. Skinner, Lawrence, Wells, Bohanna, maybe one of the Browns can get in the rotation if they come to MSU.
DB/S: Overall better I think. If Nickoe can get healthy and start, this group will change a lot. I think Banks would move to FS, Whitley would move to SS, and Slay and Broomfield would be our starting CBs. I think Banks is a better fit at safety, and if he wants to make it to the NFL, that's where I think he needs to play.
K/P Overall better if Bell signs and doesn't have grade problems that keep him from us. I think his ability to kick it deep will win us at least 1game this year.

the legend of the redshirting/backup QB is still alive and well here. Prescot may be the best thing since sliced bread, but he hasn't played a down of D1 football yet.

So if we're going to sign a kicker I'm glad we got him. I know we had a kicker from Warren Central a few years back that didn't pan out, but you win some you lose some. From what I've heard from folks who have seen him first hand is that he's a booming kicker. He'll be a kickoff specialist, not great on punting or FG's but solid.I think the Sobiesk kid is coming in to be the FG kicker in this class, as a walk-on.

At least they do list him though. Still, it's very difficult to project a kicker to the next level. We've seen a lot more supposedly good HS kickers completely bomb at the college level than just the other kid from Warren Central.

he outplayed Relf in the big bowl scrimmage we had, and is a different type runner. But he is still young and has to work on reading coverages- as well as being more consistent. I think he and Tyler will eventually move to a 50/50 number of snaps later in the season and thru 2013.

the bomb. But I have seen enough of this kid in practice & scrimmages (btw facing an SEC defense) to tell you he's gonna be good. You do realize he's Mullen's 1st REAL QB he recruited for his system right? Croom recruited Tyler and Mullen finished it off. Relf was already here and NOBODY wanted Dylan. But Les Miles wanted Dak. But Dan had already beat the ground enough in Monroe to sign him. He's faster than Relf & makes FAR quicker decisions (which is why Relf was sacked most of the time) with the football. He may be a little smaller than Relf but he's more of an athlete. One thing I'm curious of is how he's going to hold up from taking punishment. That to me is the ONLY thing i'm curious of.

I certainly hope he works out, we need a booming kickoff guy in the worst way.

to where he doesn`t have to "hold up from taking punishment" ? If the kid is a franchise type player as he sounds like you got to protect him as much as possible.

or as i like to say "my boy" for 2012

Griffin and Perkins are both very talented, but Josh is a bowling ball rolling with 4.4 speed maybe even 4.3
last year at big dawg camp he said he ran a 4.2, getting him in last year was HUGE!
