1. Another cupcake, another nail biter. Rutgers just can’t seem to put a full game together. In this game, AU blitzed Rutgers with a fast pace on offense and an aggressive man defense, and we just didn’t look ready for either, falling behind 22-11 in the first 10 minutes. To their credit, Rutgers regrouped and tied the game 33-33 at the half.

2. In the second half, Rutgers did a much better job defending AU’s quick offense. And after shooting 9-21 from deep in the first half, AU curiously stopped shooting threes and instead tried to pound the ball inside.

3. Despite taking an 11-point lead in the second half, Rutgers once again couldn’t put away a lesser opponent, and AU chipped it back to single digits time and again.

4. Rutgers sealed this game at the foul line, going 24-30 (80%), including 7-8 down the stretch by JMike, Grant, Buchanan, and Francis.

5. MVP tonight was Francis, who scored 19 points overall in just 24 minutes, including 14 points in the second half to spur Rutgers past the Eagles. But right behind him was Dylan Grant, who had another double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Solid help came from Denis Badalau, who chipped in with 10 points (4-8, 2-3). Buchanan also had 10 points, with 6-9 at the line.

6. Overall, the offense looked out of synch, but managed to score 80 points on the strength of good shooting from the field (25-53 overall for 47%, and 6-15 from deep for 40%) and at the charity stripe (24-30 for 80%). Most of the offense was generated by iso, with Francis or Buchanan operating from the top and either dribble driving to the hole or kicking out.

7. Unfortunately, the defense hasn’t hit its stride yet, allowing AU to go 12-32 (38%) from 3-pt range, many of which were on open looks, and giving up 71 points to a low major opponent. AU ran a ton of motion and pick and roll action to free up shooters, and we couldn’t stay with them on numerous possessions. Positive within a negative, AU started 6-9 from deep in the first ten minutes, but then only hit 6 of their last 23 over the rest of the game. But Rutgers can’t let teams get off to such a hot start, as they won’t be able to come back against better competition. Our defensive efficiency on KenPom has now plummeted to #84 (102.3), dropping our overall KenPom rating to #95.

8. Freshman update - as noted, Badalau had a solid game with 10 points and a couple of blocks. Harun Zrno had 4 points in limited action, hitting a three and 1-2 at the line. But it was a quiet night for Nwuli (2 points, but 2-2 at the line) and Lino Mark (2 points), who is struggling to get comfortable.

9. Center update - not many points from our 3-headed center, but they played solid defense and did a good job on the boards. Ogbole (4), Fall (5), and Dortch (5) combined for 14 rebounds. Manny also did a good job with rim protection, garnering 3 blocks. Special shout-out to Manny for one play where Francis drove down the lane, passed it to Manny, who then gathered the ball, spun to his left, and kissed the ball off the glass for a layup. He could not have made that play last year.

When a team like American runs motion and chucks up 32 threes on offense, then turns around and puts us at the foul line on defense, it can make things chaotic and disjointed for us..

If enough of their threes go down, it will make the game closer than it should be, but still difficult to beat us when they’re sending us to the foul line so much, while we’re also dominating points in the paint.

A side benefit — we needed to face a primarily man-to-man defense for a change, which will help us get ready for what we’ll face against power conference opponents.

They won. Yeah, they are gonna stink this year and have a bunch of games where we turn off the TV before halftime, but at least they got this one. I am still trying to figure out what can keep me tuned in for the season. What on this team is the hope?

unfortunately the upside is limited. You watch the same way you watched Pike teams in year 1 and 2.

Too much help defense allows open 3s. When a team gets hot from the outside play glue like man to man D.
They started 6-9 in the first 9 min of the game and then 6-23 with a couple Hail Marys at the end of the game one that was banked. The adjustment was made. The bigger problem I see is 1. we have too many turnovers and 2. We only had 1 steal all game.

the concerning part is it isn't as if RU played badly--they needed to shoot well, esp at FT line, to win by 9. it shows how low of a talent ceiling this year's team has, and why many of us are predicting doom and gloom beginning with the Vegas tournament.

RU would be the favorite to win the Patriot League, but that's about it.

1. Game was won at the foul line. 80% is getting the job done. Well done.

2. 6-15 from three not bad at all. We are so offensively challenged, I suspect we are going to have shoot more from three.

3. Another nice solid double double from Grant.

4. Francis had a very nice all around game.

5. Balanced scoring always nice. Badalau had a nice +/- game and a solid 10 points.
Buchanan is up and down but ended positively and hit double figures.

6. Quiet night for JMike and although that’s not the play I wanted at the end of the 1st half, but he did hit the drive and foul shot and tied it up. Big play. Nice momentum into the 2nd half and not trailing.

7. Zrno hit a nice three and looks like he has a nice stroke. We are going to need it. European players have to hit all or most of their foul shots. Hope he gets untracked.

8. We rebounded well. Nice rebounding contributions by Dortch and Fall.

9. 6 block shots was nice to see. Like Hinson! ;-)

10. Defense intensity lacking in 1st Half.

11. We only had one steal?? That’s not a good sign.

12. American only had 7 turnovers? That’s not a good sign either. We had 11 turnovers.

13. Missed opportunity to do a mini-tribute to Tom Young. Coached at both schools.

14. Mr. DJ, Please for the love of God, don’t do the stupid clap clap clap clap clap cheer when RU is shooting foul shots. SMH.

15. 6:30 starts are great.

16. Hope we are learning and getting better. Sluggish start wasn’t encouraging but we did come out tough to start the second.
American wasn’t awful. Winning game at the line is a good thing.

rotated and helped way too much on defense in first half, leading to lots of 3s that American drilled. Pike completed flipped that in second half, letting them drive and playing straight up, forcing them to shoot in the paint which they missed or got blocked. American went scoreless the first 5 mins of second half. Only question is why did it take Pike a half to figure that out.

first 5 mins of second half was great on both ends, we opened up a 10 point lead. Pike subbed all 5 players and let American get back in the game,

Buchanan should never be running point. He was a mole tonight, every time he touched the ball it was a circus shot or turnover.

Free throws were a pleasant surprise

This is not an Eddie Jordan-level bad team. athleticism for defense and rebounding will keep them in games. Offense, both ability and schemes will hold them back.

Trying not to be negative - but looking for some "incremental" improvement - and this game didn't see any. Can the students bring in a sign for Buchanan that says -- Pass the Ball. His playing this way is not sustainable - but (so far) it is consistent. And that's on the coaching staff to fix. So another comment (on the Round Table side) talking about a rotation of - Nwuli, Mark, and Buchanan all on the floor at the same time (and I also think Dortch) with JMike; And agree with the observation -- Just not the right mix of guys to be on the floor at the same time. On the good side - did do a very good job of shutting down their 3's - but lack of a 5 is so evident - on how much they scored inside. And I know Dortch is trying. Know the younger guys will keep working - so at best games will be competitive and tonight was.

Pike trying to figure out lineups. I understand it, but it finally looks like we’re gonna put the hammer down and he takes Francis and grant (25 points at the time ) out of the lineup. We lose all sync and from then on it’s a ballgame.

yeah, that was a long stretch with 2 freshman (Lino and Nwuli) and Dortch at the 5 with Big E in foul trouble.

Positives - 4-0 and Francis and Grant clearly have established they are the lead guys offensively

negatives - only forced 8 turnovers, poor defense 3 point defense and needed to take 30 free throws and make 80% which is unusual for us to win… typical night at the line we lose and needing to rely on free throws against low major not great

yep. at this point in a semi close game, we always need one of them on the floor at all times because they’re the only ones who can consistently create their own shot and obviously score

What is more important, running up the score on a cupcake or giving playing time to freshmen when they need to create offense?

Pikiel needs these games to develop Freshman. To your point, with Mark, Nwuli and Buchanan out there without Grant, Francis and Badalau, the +/- was -5, -6, and -7 respectively for these players for the game. He gave them playing time where the pressure was on them to step up and make plays without relying on Grant and Francis who have already shown the ability to step up. Mark needed it the most as he was 0-6 shooting coming in and had yet to score. He is now 1-8. Grant started last year going 0-9. Freshmen need playing time to get comfortable with the college game.

I thought that Rutgers got punched in the first 8 minutes but once they got their legs they controlled the game. I am not as down about this team as others but the BIG is tough so see 6/7 wins. Let’s see how Vegas pans out

This is a reasonable take. Even when things got tight in the second, I didn’t feel like we were gonna lose. Felt confident once what appears to be the starting 5 were all back in down the stretch. Rotation will tighten up on Monday.

This is a really important point. Long stretch with Nwuli and Lino on the court with Dortch at the 5. I don’t expect to see that after Friday.

At least not until late December when they play Penn and Delaware State. We will likely need those games to regain some confidence as even though I think this team will exceed expectations starting the Big Ten against #1 Purdue at # 6/7 Michigan could result in two blowout losses.

I'm guessing our gameplan going in was to live with longer 3s and shut down any penetration and control the glass. Even though they took a ton of 3s, before that first half they hadn't hit them at a good clip. Then when they got hot we adjusted and stopped helping as much and the clean looks dried up.

I'd call that good coaching, personally.

I'm going to enjoy the victories we do get. I'll save the belly aching for when we lose.

A few key moments for me:
- JMike tying the game just before the half. American knew they played their best and all it got them was a tie game.
- Nwuli making both of his free throws. Those were important points at the time and a good sign that he didn't wilt under the spotlight.
- Badalau triple when the game was too close for comfort late.
- The overall presence of Grant. Clearly, the best player on the floor, and he stepped up with rebounds and free throws.

Big picture:
- We're 4-0
- We have enough of a sample size now to know that while the competition is a factor, we have seen solid improvement from all four guys who are back from last season.
- We should have consistency from Grant, Davis, and Francis. In games where Ogbole, Badalau, and Buchanan play well, we can steal some wins.
- Outside of Badalau, the freshman are pretty raw, but we don't need to rely on them. Some good minutes here and there is all we need.

Going onto the season, the biggest criticism of this team was nobody can score, hit free throws or shoot the 3. As a team, Rutgers has shot 46% from the field, 37% from 3 and 69% from the line. If you shorten the roster down to the top 8 offensive and arguably defensive players (the 5 starters plus Buchanan, Dortch, and Nwuli), the offense improves to 49% from the field, 39% from 3 and 70% from the line. The two biggest standouts are Grant 59% from the field, 67% from 3 and 78% from the line and Ogbole 63% from the field. However, since the first game when he went 0-5, he has gone 12-14 from the field (86%). Francis is the best free throw shooter at 92%. The question is how will this translate to Big Ten play. We simply don’t know.

The biggest issue so far in OOC play is Rutgers defense. We are giving up to many uncontested 3s. Another issue is we may suffer on defense in the Big Ten if we have both Francis and Davis playing together at the same time. We don’t know that will be a problem, but it’s a real concern. Another issue is how many minutes per game can we get out of Ogbole as Dortch is undersized. However, defense is something Pikiel is good at developing so I am hopeful he will find answers by the time Big Ten play goes into full swing. Pikiel has a tall and athletic frontcourt so I expect he will come up with some answers.

As optimistic as I am about this team exceeding expectations, I would not expect particularly good performances against Tennessee which will be significantly better than any team we faced, Purdue which is the number one team in the nation for a reason, or Michigan which is #6/7 and at home. After that we will see how this team adjusts to the much higher level of competition.

A number of takes , some positive and some negative.
Positives. It should be evident to Pike that Dylan Grant needs to get the ball in different spaces on the floor . Despite being off and short arming his shots in the first half , he ended with 22 points and 11 rebounds . I did not like Pike putting Grant in the corner in the second half while he had Francis running high pick and roll, as he never got him the ball in the paint or at foul line extended. He did hit a big 3 from the corner but his use was not optimized.

Positive and Negative. Nice adjustment by Pike to take away the 3 point shot to start and most of the second half . However , why he let it continue in the first half was bad. Why didn’t he adjust and allow open threes alll half ? American made 9 threes in the first half for 27 of their 33 points. The only reason they got a lead and were in the game. Taking it away sooner would have let RU lead at halftime but instead the team did a good job offensively to get it tied at 33 at the half.

Positive and negative .Although Francis made some shots and scored tonight which was good compared to the other night , he shoots too too damn much. He doesn’t make any attempt to pass the ball or get it to Dylan who had his man sealed down low a few times. I want Dylan taking our shots or the Euros getting open looks . Francis seems to jack up a 3 because he thinks he thinks it is his time to shoot again. Way too much shooting which he will not get away with in conference.

Positive and negative. Bryce Dorsch has become a capable defensive 5 and rebounder but he has to be more offensive minded or when he gets the offensive rebounds he gets, he has to go back up and flush it more often. Which brings me to the negative. Manny got in foul trouble last night which will happen often in conference play and he has to be more careful as he gets called for fouls pushing people and he doesn’t have to. He showed his importance as a rim protector as he had 3 great blocks last night which was such a welcome sight . He needs to stay on the floor especially against the bigger centers in conference.

Pike has to do a better job getting the Euros open shots and open threes . He ran a good play out of a timeout and got Zrno the ball on a team screen and he knocked down the 3. But we need more. In the first half we had 2 threes to American ‘s 9 which is being outscored 27-6 from three. If was very difficult to have leads or hold them and the offense had to do a hell of a lot of good things as we did just to get even at the half. Staggered screens would work.

The freshman Mark and Nwuili are trying hard and are having a difficult time because they are freshman. They will both help this team as the season goes along.

Overall , 4-0 is nice but I would like to see less dribbling from Francis and Buchanan and more quick passing to get an open look. The passing was good in the first game or 2 and not so much the last 2. A little bit too much iso ball , and I know every team does it , but our team needs to pass quicker and get the open look and let it fly.

Fair comments for most part. Francis was 6-13 for 19 pts and Grant was 7-12 for 22 pts. Francis didn’t really force shots but if you want to say Grant should have a few more shots than him I‘m fine with that.

I‘m fine with Francis taking “good” shots at a close to 50% clip. Not to mention the kid for his size knows how to attack the basket. Had a couple of defenders on roller skates.

Our guards can’t consistently breakdown their defender. Francis can some but top guard defenders will give us real problems. And with a lack of player movement it just adds to the problem.

first game we had really good ball movement and some player movement. The last couple of games the defense pressure has caused us problems.

After 4 games, I have to say I’ve been pleasantly surprised by a few things:

1) Dylan Grant’s progression seems to be a year ahead of schedule — I.e., he’s playing like a Junior.
2) Tariq Francis is not the “seventh man” we imagined — on this team at least, he’s a legit starter.
3) Ogbole has improved dramatically, from nearly unplayable to, “we need him on the court more.”
4) Badalau is a fairly complete player — heady and mature, though somewhat inconsistent still.
5) JMike continues to improve, and while undersized as always he’s scrappy with a high motor.

The bench is very much a work in progress:

6) Dortch has improved and will give good breather minutes especially defensively and rebounding.
7) Buchanan is a bit of an enigma — the ability is there but needs to be channeled properly.
8) Fall has been mostly disappointing with some glimmer of light versus American.
9) Zrno is okay for playing the sniper role, with a lot of defensive work needed.
10) Nwulli has obvious potential and needs time to break free from freshman mistakes.
11) Lino doesn’t appear ready, imo, but Pike must see something that tells him court time is the tonic.

Before the season, I was thinking 3-4 B1G wins, but I've been pleasantly surprised enough to up that to 5-6 B1G wins. This is not a very talented team, but the players from last year are at least a bit improved and a couple of the new guys have some talent, plus they do work hard and play team basketball for the most part. But the lack of major talent and depth are too much, IMO to expect to make it close to the bubble. Would love to be proven wrong.
