(the important one, not the recent one)
I had no idea USM's stadium was named after a racist jackass.

The move to convene the board came from a trustee from Hattiesburg, M.M. Roberts, a tenacious lawyer and proud racist who liked to play golf alone, often at a trot. He called the issue at hand "the greatest challenge to our way of life since Reconstruction." Several days earlier he had reached Colvard's wife, Martha, on the phone and told her that her husband had "ruined the state."

Here's the article.

Yep. That's a bit of a sore spot to some people at USM & I think USM likes to downplay it what with the emphasis on The Rock as well as some additional signage referring to Carlisle-Faulkner Field (before expansion, it was known as Faulkner Field).

The "Rebel Underground" might be a group that most Rebel fans want to keep quiet about. I've never heard of that group but it seems like that group, and their disregard for the rights of blacks at that time, represents the basis of that University today. Look at all their racist traditions that they have been FORCED to give up. It still exists over there folks...

How has this entire story never made it to the big screen?

It's got everything you need: racial tension, possible violence, politics, sports, a getaway scene, and a happy ending.

Thread hijack. What does the Pack think would have happened if Ole Miss had won an SEC basketball championship in 1959, 1961 and 1962. Is the unwritten law avoided so the Rebels get a chance to play in the NCAA? Ole Miss ran (and still does to a large extent) Mississippi politics in the 50's and 60's. Was MSU forced to stay home because it was MSU and not Ole Miss playing against blacks?

The only thing different that would have happened is that UM wouldn't have gone to the 1963 NCAA tournament.

It's hard not to find stuff named after segregationists in MS.

From reading that article, turns out we've got at least one on MSU's campus. Maybe two, but it's hard to tell if that's how Dudy Noble felt or if he was just following orders.
