Tiger's Mack Prosise powers away for a first down as Sussex Central spoils Brunswick's homecoming.

LAWRENCEVILLE- The Brunswick Bulldogs were coming off a lack luster performance versus Park View in which they lost. Sussex Central was coming off a contest where they failed to provide 4 quarters of solid play and lost. Friday night they both went in trying to heal the wounds of last week.

One wound that couldn’t be corrected in a week was the injury to quarterback Darren Owens who had season ending surgery that went well. Owens has an offer from Old Dominion and a walk-on invite to Michigan. For a half of football you could tell the Bulldogs missed their do everything qb.

Running back An'Tae Motton looks to make the block to spring Malik Delk for yardage.

The game started off with Sussex Central driving steadily with runs from An’Tae Motton and Trevon Hatch. The Tigers would consistently convert of shortage downs on 3rd and 4th downs throughout the drive. The opening drive would end at the 7:19 mark with Motton racing in from 23-yards out.

Brunswick would respond immediately to calm the homecoming crowd’s nerves as Sharmaine Alexander would scoop up a squib kick and take it 56-yards for the touchdown. Treven Easter would get the important 2-point conversion to give Brunswick an 8-6 lead.

Sussex Central would repeat the same philosophy as they pounded the Bulldog defense. Inside the Brunswick 20, Sussex Central would fumble giving Brunswick the ball at their own 11-yard line. The crowd would get to see the projected 2016 starting quarterback run the offense as Isreal Reavis Jr. would be behind center. Use to the height of Owens, the center snapped it high over Reavis’s head. He would not be able to recover the loose ball as the Tiger’s Rakeem White would land on it in the endzone. 12-8 Sussex Central after one.

After stopping the Bulldogs on their possession, the Tigers had another long drive which ending with Hatch going in from 3-yards to out to give Sussex Central an 18-8 lead with 2:56 left before the half. The woes with 2-point conversions continued to plagued them in this contest and will need to be corrected soon.

Trevon Hatch was steady picking up crucial yardage all night.

Once the halftime activities were done for homecoming the Bulldogs came out of the locker room showing a lot of fight. With good runs from Alexander and Easter getting the Bulldogs into Tiger territory, it would be Reavis who would cash in from 20-yards out. Easter would power through on the conversion to make it 18-16 Sussex with 3:15 left in the 3rd.

The Tigers would answer with their quickest drive of the night. Following big runs from Hatch and Motton, quarterback Malik Delk would find the edge and race 27-yards for the touchdown to give the Tigers a 24-16 lead as the 3rd quarter winded down.

Isreal Reavis will continue to keep athlectism at the Brunswick quarterback position.

The Tigers remembered last week when they couldn’t close the deal on a Franklin victory and pushed to get the ball down the field after stopping a Bulldog attempt to convert on 4th down. Sussex Central would fumble driving at mid-field as Marquise Joyner would return the fumble 52-yards for a touchdown to make it 24-22 with 6:09 left to play. On the conversion however, Easter would be stacked up and deny entry to keep Sussex Central ahead by 2.

Sussex Central would try to end the game with the running game and was knocking on the door with a game shutting score. Runs by Mack Prosise, Motton, and Delk got the Tigers in position. The Tigers would again fumble deep in Brunswick territory would be recovered by the Bulldogs giving them on last chance with under 2 minutes to play.

Sussex Central's defense kept Treven Easter of Brunswick in check most of the night.

Sussex Central’s defense would rise to the occasion as Marvin Robinson Jr. would make two consecutive plays in the secondary to close out the game. Sussex Central (6-2) now sits on top of the Tri-Rivers district standings. They will now face rival Greensville County (5-3) in Sussex for the district title.

Brunswick (3-4) will next host Surry for a chance to even their record and then host Southampton on November 2nd.
