The key is the put out vague information, soften your stance, have so many inside sources you cover all the bases, and edit often, and you'll never be wrong.

I hope you are true. I know that we can always find another coach but you are not going to have many that bring the swagger like Mullen has. I think that he brings the attitude that we need. Our fans eat up and our players play hard. Byrne was so smart. I think that his plan must have been to get the opposite of Croom and he found it.
I think Mullen is being disengenuous if he is entertaining offers this early in his tenure. He is saying too much about longevity here to be interested this early. There are great jobs that come open every year, and there should not be any rush for him to leave. I can see after 4-5 years him feeling mission accomplished, but not after two. I am a huge Mullen fan, but I think he owes, yes owes, this University 4-5 years, assuming we financially and facility-wise take care of him.
He does owe us several more yrs. We gave him his big break. I feel he's going to be around. If not, oh well. Worry about what I can control.
I think its good PR for us. Milk it for a week or so and then have a press conference and say how you never inteneded on leaving and you love it in God's country. There are tons of high school kids in Florida learning about Mullen this week. Cant hurt.
Everyone says this his job was to clean up the program kind of like Croom except his first three years counted. Wait he also won and went to 3 bowls.

If Mullen turns Miami down it is great for us. I'm still trying to find out about the Coach wanting some details from the AD on stadium expansion, salary for his staff, and coaching digs upgraded. Has anyone heard about this?
If he leaves after two years, his positve impact will be negligible. He needs to be committed to our program to a larger degree than this. Who would we then hire? It's a nightmare for us if he leaves now. Don't act like it's all in a day's work or something. He is our effen coach.
I disagree with that notion. If you're a coach, you're only as good as your last year. In today's market, you may be a hot commodity one year and on the hot seat the next.
It all depends on how far he thinks he can take your program, what pieces he believes he has in place to do it in the near future, and what type of job it is he would really want.
Being honest, neither of our schools are final destinations for a top notch coach, assuming we land one. The only way we'd be a final destination type job for a great coach would be if that coach happened to be from the area or was an alum, or had some other reason to want to stay long term.
One cautionary tale for coaches is a guy like Greg Schiano at Rutgers. How often do you hear his name mentioned for big jobs? A few years back, he was a really hot name. Now, he's nothing. Jim Grobe at Wake Forest would be another one.
The other cautionary tale is Rich Rodriguez. He did end up jumping ship for a better job, except it hasn't been a good fit, so as a coach you better make sure the job you jump to is not only a good fit for you but it's a good time to take over.

I don't run off on an informational meeting, make a phone call to see what it pays, or express other interest when I am satisfied with the position and company I work for now.... I simply tell them I'm not interested ... granted, it's not for $ 2 mil like these coaches

I'm happy in my current position but I have a conversation every time a recruiter calls to learn about what other organizations in my industry are doing, what they're looking for etc, and I'm not threatened when my direct reports do the same. A conversation with someone outside of my company gives a good perspective of what my competitors are doing and trying to do in the future.

no intention to leave their job, but they interview with other companies to get a feel for the lay of the land, what managers are looking for, where things are headed, to get a feel if the current job is better than they thought, etc. For instance, years back, a friend set me up with an interview with a company that had the rep for paying their employees above market value. I interviewed and was offered a job with a salary that was$5K more than what I was making. Before Iaccepted, I called their HR Dept., and asked forthe details of the company sponsored health-care plan. After running the figures for my family against that plan, I discovered thattheadditional co-pays, out-of-pocket fees, and non-covered itemsexceeded the $5K raise I'd be getting. Bottom-line: I'd have gone in the hole to take the new job. It opened my eyes to what I already had and caused me to be more grateful and appreciative of the position I was in.
but this is possibly the stupidest post I've ever seen dealing with coaches. We would fire his *** in a heartbeat if he was sucking, he doesn't OWE us anything. Love Dan, love Megan, want them to stay but they have given 100% to this program from the day they showed up on campus. They can, and should, do what is best for their family. This time around, Boone has left the decision on staff changes up to him. They didn't do that with Cutcliffe, which is why they ended up firing him. They're giving Nutt the rope and letting him decide whether to use it to climb out of the hole or hang himself.
