Maspero's, Camellia Grill, and Drago's in that order. Any kind of poboy from Maspero's, the reuben from Camellia Grill, and the charbroiled oysters from Drago's.

2nd on Camilla's for lunch. I like Coop's Place for dinner. Inexpensive and excellent. Cool little place that isn't in a rowdy part of the quarter. If you go chain, I like Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro on St. Charles. Al Copeland corporate owned restaurants in N.O. are good.

The New Orleans style eggs Benedict at the Palace Cafe for Sunday brunch. One of the best things I have ever eaten. Seriously.

That bread pudding is incredible too.

Don't get sucked into the hype of Commander's Palace. One of the worst meals I ever had. Gumbo was so salty it was near inedible with no rice. One of our group had to send her entree back 3 times because it was ice cold. For 7 of suit was over $600 before tip. Awful.

NOLA restaurant recommendations

The following locations should give you a good variety outside of the normal tourist places (morning, noon and night):
Joey K's (Magazine St.), Parkway Bakery & Tavern (Hagan Ave.), Neyow's (Bienville), Mandina's (Cash ONLY) (Canal St.), Camellia Grill (St. Charles/Carrolton), Betsy's Pancake House (Canal), Slice (St. Charles), VooDoo Barbeque (St. Charles), Crescent City Steak House (North Broad), Juan's Flying Burrito (Magazine St.), Borgne (Loyola Ave. in the Hyatt), Dreamy Weenies (Rampart).
Let me know if you need more.

I like Jimani's on the corner of Iberville and Chartres for great local eats. Don't go too late with the kids because the crowd is 90% locals and get a bit "eclectic" past about 9 pm. You also can't miss with Frankie's & Johnnies for great family eats for a budget price, though it's not in the Quarter. Bunch of gators and weird stuff on the walls--kids love it.

Haven't had Cochon, but I have had Cochon Butcher. I think they share a kitchen. Regardless, the sandwiches from Butcher are amazing.

When in 'nawlins I have to have a Peacemaker Poboy at Acme Oyster House, Chargrilled oysters at Drago's, and beignets at Cafe du Monde. Most of the other recommendations are good - it's a food city. I do second the comment on Commander's Palace - not worth the hype or the price. If you get tired of seafood, you must go to Willie Mae's Scotch House. The Jame Beard Foundation got 'ol Willie Mae up and running before most 'nawlins restaurants after Katrina - that's how much James Beard thinks of the "best fried chicken in 'nawlins".

Enjoy.

Here here, Duckdawg. My wife and I went last spring and both thought Commander's Palace was garbage. It was the most expensive meal of our trip and the worst. The cheapest--the mufaletta at Central Grocery--was the best.

I highly recommend the Upper Line restaurant in the Garden District. The food and service is great and the atmosphere is colorful and casual while being dignified enough for you to know you are in a very good restaurant. Your daughters will feel welcome. My wife and I love this place and dine there every time we are in New Orleans. It's very popular among people who live in and near the Garden District and you will enjoy seeing the beautiful homes on your drive there. Drew Brees lives very near there. Link to menu below:

+1 on this one. I stumbled into this place back in 1987 and try to go every time I get down that way. I had a sweet victory meal here after the '96 SEC Basketball Championship Game.

Been there for breakfast a few times

Pretty small as I recall, and not fancy at all. But good food. I'd go back.

Anyone tried Bayona? I'm supposed to have dinner there in a couple of weeks. In was rated best restaurant in New Orleans in either 2010 or 2011.

I ordered the gumbo appetizer and it came with no rice. Got the seafood sampler entree, it had 1, 2 oz fish filet and 2 shrimp. $45.

My parents go to NO for weekend eating excursions a good bit..

and they have started going to Bayona every time now. Always been a good place, but they are apparently really on top of their game now. Fairly eclectic menu and they must make a good martini if my Dad keeps going back.

When did you go?

because I went about 3 years ago and had the best dining experience of my life. McPhail just won the James Beard award for best chef South East.

I wouldn't take kids 2, 8, & 13 though.

Try Deanies in the Quarter

Not the best seafood you'll ever get, but they serve up some good fried soft shell, shrimp, oysters, etc. Plus bloodys in a goblet with a boiled shrimp garnish for the parents or any abita on tap. Big place, easy to walk to, loud enough your kids won't have to be on their best behavior. You'll leave full and content.
