I'm hoping the Minnesota game was a huge wakeup call for the coaches. There are no gimme games in conferenceMy eyes. We are squeaking by weak teams and lost badly to an awful Minnesota team. I’m not saying we haven’t seen progress and I’m fairly optimistic about the future if we can keep the roster together. I had hoped for more this year than that MN game We have more talent than Minnesota.
He may not have–though he hasn't done nothing and there is visible improvement in the program–but the rest of the CFB world has done quite a bit to make you want to lock up your coach if you don't want to get in a bidding war. He’s done nothing to deserve this.
If he wins on Saturday would that put him back in? Can't have a one sided view and the safe play is to extend him while adding the $15 million buyout so you don't have to deal with the potentially disastrous situation of losing him, losing players, losing recruits, losing coaches, losing continuity, and getting in a bidding war for a top coach who may not even be a good fit. That buyout doesn’t mean anything. Getting raped by the Gophers removed him from any of the jobs this cycle….
I'm much more interested in the buyout on the other side.If he wins on Saturday would that put him back in? I think everyone can agree that he HAS to focus on bringing in talent, and maybe a new coach, to fix the line play on both sides of the ball. However outside of that, you can't hate what he has been doing. It's been a long time since this program has felt even close to the way it does now.
As I posted earlier, we’re in a wait and see mode. I don’t think there’s anything Rhule could do short of winning out to lure a job offer out of a top program. LSU and Florida aren’t calling. PSU could get desperate if he wins out and they don’t have their guy.If he wins on Saturday would that put him back in? They addressed left tackle and a guard spot. 40% of the O line via the portal. Who knew Gottula was going to have multiple injuries. He’s been injured since fall camp. They tried on D line. They brought in a young guy they think can grow in to a run stuffing NT but he’s probably a year away. Not sure how much more they could have done.I'm so torn on this. I like Rhule, a lot. He has unquestionably done better than his two predecessors. The locker room culture is better, recruiting has the most moment it's had since Billy C. We are clearly finally able to compete at the skill position level (Key and Hunter are LEGIT).
But on the flip side. His treatment of the offensive and defensive lines has been so abhorent, it calls into question everything else he's done.
I'm willing to wait and see (Its still year only 3. I know Rhule is a year 3 guy - but rebuilds do take time). But I could genuinely go either way at this point if Penn State came calling...
Not hating, but the AD seems to have overlooked where his base salary falls and what type of results we have received to date. This thread is ridiculous. It's adding to the end of the contract and is adding more incentives that I would think everyone would be happy to pay if they were to happen.
This fan base is so out of touch. Extensions are a normal thing, he was approached about an extension last year even. It usually is just a ceremonial thing to show commitment from each. If he were to win big, then you'd probably see something different.
The hate for Rhule everywhere is a bit odd, considering how long of a leash so many people gave Frost. Of course this could go south, but from the outside there is more of a foundation here than there has been since some of the Bo years.
I doubt that when this hiring cycle ends Rhule will be a top 10 in base salary. Not hating, but the AD seems to have overlooked where his base salary falls and what type of results we have received to date.
With his initial contract, he was paid top 15 money to be a top 15 coach… now we’ve bent over and extended bonuses to not be an average coach on top of the overpaid base salary.
Also part of this is if Rhule does leave this year the $ owed to Nebraska is now $15 mil not $5Rhule's agent played a good ole fashion game of chicken with our athletic department, and as usual, our athletic department blinked.
He will not be top 15 in current pay by the start of 2026.Not hating, but the AD seems to have overlooked where his base salary falls and what type of results we have received to date.

You know they much rather be on the Nebraska boardsFunny. Now go back to your own board
IF he would leave, Nebraska would now be owed $15 million instead of $5. That is a benefit for the school. This thread is ridiculous. It's adding to the end of the contract and is adding more incentives that I would think everyone would be happy to pay if they were to happen.

Plus the playoff incentives. Bet on yourself add ons.IF he would leave, Nebraska would now be owed $15 million instead of $5. That is a benefit for the school.
Obviously it's fair to be concerned about the lines. But I don't think his treatment of the defensive line in particular was abhorrent the first two years. And this year, EJ is on pace to be above 1000 yds rushing and 1500 yds from scrimmage.I'm so torn on this. I like Rhule, a lot. He has unquestionably done better than his two predecessors. When that 34% win coach got his gift extension, people here spewed the exact same nonsense and scolded all the big meanies who thought it was a terrible idea.He will not be top 15 in current pay by the start of 2026.
Whether you like it or not, he is being compared mostly to the 34% win head coach before him. In that case it is a worthy turnaround so far.
Hire Trev back!IF we get bent over by USC and UCLA, Dannen will be worried about his own job. This extension probably didn’t happen in a vacuum. I have to believe a few of the boosters of substance were well aware and had input.
It was a terrible idea, no way around it. In terms of Rhule, when a team gets to back to back bowls when they hadn't in 8 years, yes the expectations should lower a bit for the time being, not foreverWhen that 34% win coach got his gift extension, people here spewed the exact same nonsense and scolded all the big meanies who thought it was a terrible idea.
I'll give him the defensive front, though I still think they were unprepared for the departure of Nash and Ty. We completely lack a true nose. But I will give him the credit of losing two incredibly valuable plugs up front.Obviously it's fair to be concerned about the lines. Pocket change. Also part of this is if Rhule does leave this year the $ owed to Nebraska is now $15 mil not $5
I actually thought he would get a 3 year extensionEither Rhule decided he wasn't going to PSU, or was told that, or both. And that being the case, he wrapped up whatever the extension was going, in order to communicate to players and recruits that he would indeed be in Lincoln.
Vid of Iowa and PSU fans today...

Hiring an actual D-1 OL coach wouldn’t change anything? As I posted earlier, we’re in a wait and see mode. IMO the only way hiring a different O line coach would change anything is if he brought a top OT with him. I don’t see that happening.
We need to roll our the Brinks truck for the Ek of Olines.Hiring an actual D-1 OL coach wouldn’t change anything?
Wow.
Senility has a new name and it’s Dinglefritz.
And yet, all the same platitudes were dutifully recited:It was a terrible idea, no way around it. In terms of Rhule, when a team gets to back to back bowls when they hadn't in 8 years, yes the expectations should lower a bit for the time being, not forever
All right? 16-31 with 0 seasons over 5 wins is different. Doesn't matter what way you try to spin the current state, it is in a much better position currently. And yet, all the same platitudes were dutifully recited:
- Program's moving in the right direction!
- Gotta show the coach you're committed!
- Recruiting! What will the recruits think if there's no extension???
My"spin" is that Rhule is already handsomely compensated for the results he's achieved. All right? 16-31 with 0 seasons over 5 wins is different. Doesn't matter what way you try to spin the current state, it is in a much better position currently.
The fact that you are out of touch with the reality of power 4 college football. My"spin" is that Rhule is already handsomely compensated for the results he's achieved.
Tell me what's incorrect about that assessment.
