“Then goes on to say that we are playing 6 rated teams next year and coming to Nebraska you have a chance to play the best! Put some stuff on top tape against the best”

This quote is what upsets me the most. I can go to any school in the big ten or sec and face ranked teams. That doesn’t make Nebraska special. Notice how he doesn’t mention being able to beat ranked teams. It’s like saying “Hey we will get our *** kicked by six ranked teams but at least it will be televised so people can see you get your *** kicked!”

But you said the two don’t come from the same pot. Why are you justifying the expenditure as one as long term and one as short-term if they aren’t connected to the same “pot”? Different balance sheet right?

Nighty night fat boy. Hope you have sweet dreams about your fellow fatty friend Rhule
There is no Rhule expense to justify. Even if it was from the same pot, which it isn't, the fact that they didn't spend what you wanted them to spend on players had no direct connection to Rhule's contract extension. Which is what you claimed.

No, Nebraska football is rarely discussed, It is just bitching about the coach and how he sucks and what you would do in your fantasy world where you have a say in how things are run. Then the obligatory comparison to some other time in history. Of course there is the looking back at players and coaches who left and the multiple threads that ensue.

You can go to another board you know? There are places that are all rainbows and sunshine, which is what you seem to be wanting.

Or, maybe take your own advice and post some things about actual football instead of spending all your time trying to be the posting police and telling posters what they should and shouldn't post about.

Or, possibly you could look in the mirror and realize that when things suck, fan bases are going to complain and there's nothing you can do about it. Posting the same thing over and over isn't going to change that fact. Sound familiar?

It's the offseason, Rhule continues to make misstep after misstep after misstep. Fans are getting rightfully frustrated and want to b*tch about it. Deal with it. As soon as your boy Rhule gives us something to celebrate, the VAST majority of us will happily discuss it.

Yep. Only thing missing from that quote was

"For example we just played Penn State on Nov 22. That's correct. Pennsylvania State. The best of the best, and we played them. Really not too long ago. Our players got to play Penn State. At State College. And we got to witness a bunch of PSU program records fall that very night. It was insane. My goosebumps still haven't gone away. Come here and you can be part of that. Might get to see Melvin Gordon's records fall in person, or see Ohio State set a new scoring record. Who knows what the future holds and the various program histories you'll get to be part of?

But back to the topic at hand, can you imagine stepping onto the field at State College and playing football there? You can be on the field there. Your parents will be able to film you competing there. If you come here, and stick around long enough, you, too, can play against them. They're here in '28.-- but get this -- we will almost certainly get to go back there in '29. No, I'm not kidding. We get to go back there.

I already have the hat picked out I'm wearing that day, it's a custom Nittany blue on the back and Husker red on the front. You'd think you wouldn't be able to see that blue, but when you turn it around........ man does it pop. What's that? Yeah, I'll absolutely still be here in '29. I'm under contract until '32 and these dudes aren't going to pony up to buy me out."

I basically got off the Rhule train after the Minnesota game this year. Do I think there is any reasonable chance he can turn the program into a top 25 team? No I do not. The interview was not a good look for him. He has been here 3 years. He owns it all. But in very short order we have now gone from "We have the money now to get the best players" to "we have no money for a RB " . I guess my question is, did we get the best players? A few like Hawthorn look interesting. I guess time will tell.

You may be on to something. Just give him a little bitty office in the basement with a tiny desk and chair. He can count his money all day because that is all he really cares about. Give him a title like Senior Head Football Coach Emeritus. He can have his podcast and weekly talks with Pat McAfee. Then go out and hire a real head coach to run the team and keep the Hat as far away from the team at all times. He can sit in the box with Tom during the games.
The games aren’t even played yet, everyone was expecting Indiana to blow out Miami and it didn’t happen, Miami was close to pulling out a win. let the season play out first before making a judgement, I Know the schedule looks daunting but stranger things have happened

I pity the people that will spend the next 2 plus years complaining about something that is supposed to be enjoyable.

To me it is akin to continuing to take the annual ski trip, knowing your body is going to hurt like hell, that your kids are going to be a pain in the ***, that everything is going to cost way too much, that your wife is going to annoy the **** out of you. And you still go every year, hating it, and bitching about the ski trip leading up to the trip and then after. DONT ******* GO if you don't have fun.

If Nebraska football is so annoying and causes you so much pain and mental discomfort, find a new hobby.
Yea guys, watching the team with the big red N on their helmets get their *** kicked while their coach is out of his element is supposed to be fun!

Okay - I want to support our coach but there are a couple of things that are really rubbing me the wrong way lately.

1. I always complimented Rhule’s conviction for his process and taking immediate ownership of the team.
— Now he’s telling everyone how big of a mess he had to clean up and puts blame on previous staff three years in???

2. Interviewer lobs a softball “what do you tell recruits to get them sold on Nebraska?”
—City, fans, facilities bla bla bla. Then goes on to say that we are playing 6 rated teams next year and coming to Nebraska you have a chance to play the best! Put some stuff on top tape against the best. Hey - I gotta a wild idea - why don’t you tell them we are going to be the best?? Get to play the best? What in the world?

3. Goes on to talk about the foxhole and he wants people that want to be here. The says he “wants” to be here while pounding the table. Could not be more hypocritical to take that approach after you flirt with other schools… supposedly and use that as leverage for the extension and buyout. Is that what “wanting to be here” looks like?

4. All these Coordinators and assistants turning over. Not aware of a program that has had 3 DC’s in 3 years, 2 OC’s and 3 Special teams. No good looks on this one at all.

5. Bottom line - he tried to build a team from youngsters when the winning formula has been full grown men in the portal. He acknowledges that at least in the interview.

I want to believe … we need a miracle next year with our schedule. Rhule is going to feel some boo birds next year if this thing doesn’t look way different.

Hate to be "that guy" but let me be him lol. HCMR is to the point with a large majority of the fans really DGAF what he "says". They are tired of the speeches, reasons, or excuses (depending on which side of the fence you are on). They don't want to hear about the labor pains...show them the baby.

I
As someone who hasn't decided one way or the other yet I smile at some of the stuff he says and cringe at some other stuff. But end of the day it'll come down to winning games for me. I'm past him winning or losing the interview or press conference. Its ro the point that his W/L record will stand on its on merits. Does he win enough to keep his job is an that will matter now.

For now, Rhule just needs to shut his fvcking mouth and learn how to be a head coach. He is a .500 coach and he'll always be a .500 coach.
Yeah, we're paying someone 10mil/year to learn how to coach and he's failing.

Good point on Rhule being “trapped” here and not really wanting to be here. I think he is really starting to feel the heat. I think he is starting to feel the fans turning against him. And he knows he doesn’t have the athletes to turn this around next year. His portal class was decent but only that. It is not a portal class that screams out “turnaround coming soon!”

His public comments are getting increasingly defensive and edgy. But who will hire him at a salary commensurate with what we are paying? At this point he would be looking at a very low level school and they won’t pay him what we are.

But what the heck? We have given him tens of millions. And for what? A lifetime’s worth of spit.
he could turn it around to be better than this year with just above average coaching.....
let's see what these new guys can cook up

“I think Matt’s working hard,” Tom Osborne said. “He inherited a situation that was less than ideal, and I think he’s making some progress. He’s certainly a good communicator, and I wish him well. He’s made quite a few changes on his coaching staff, and hopefully that will all work out.”

And that my friend is where the vast majority of Husker fans are. Just win. The noise doesn’t matter. For the media, we don’t need your opinions Just give us the facts you can find regarding players etc. Opinions are mostly meaningless. Just win.

True, but MR will still be using all his 2nd half TOs in the 3rd Q.
Games are lost in the 3rd quarter as well. I don't understand this line of thinking. Yes it is optimal to have 3 TOs for the last 5 minutes of a game. But there are times when taking a TO saves a drive in the 3rd quarter as well. Or a defensive TO that saves a bad matchup and a probable TD. Use the TO when you need to. Basketball coaches use TOs to slow momentum all the time at any time during the game. It keeps a 7 point game from becoming 20.

perfectly stated

This is the obvious challenge of the off-season after a horrible finish. We don’t have football happening, so we are left to critique the head coach when he speaks. And like you said, many of us are at the place where we don’t care too much about what he says anymore. It’s all about the W‘s, the improvement and development. Yet, we are left discussing his personality, his speeches, etc..

Could be a long 7-8 months.

So, just to be clear, are you defending Rhule’s game management abilities? Or are you just stating the obvious in that there are one off times when using a TO in the 3rd is actually a good move?

There are obviously time when you need to use a timeout. Sitting on your couch and believing you know exactly what is going on doesn't always make it bad game management. Because you believe Rhule sucks, in your mind it is always when a time out is called in the 3rd or 1st quarter it is bad game mangement.

I know I shouldn’t look at it this way, but the only thing that gives me the slightest bit of joy with Rhule is that he is under immense pressure and riddled with anxiety. This man wants to be loved, but what he’s experiencing now is simply going to continue to get worse.

He is making millions, but that won’t buy him any peace of mind when he’s going to spend the next 2 to 3 years getting embarrassed on Saturdays, then get fired, then go the way of most every other past Nebraska coach – to some lower level program.

These guys have egos and millions of dollars will not satisfy them – they want to be known for something. His “program turn around” myth will be an ancient history the time he packs his bags out of Nebraska and there will be no Hall of Fame or any other honors for him to look forward OR cling to from the past.

Rhule will never coach against once he is drummed out of Lincoln. He is being outed as a total fraud, a complete football incompetent, but has amassed generational wealth in the process.

He's done.

I take no joy in watching Rhule creep back to the warning track with the wind blowing out. Though you make an excellent point about how this goes. We've seen this before with Callahan, Pelini, Frost. He'd love a positive offramp, but he's square in the middle of the fishbowl. Much as I'd love to see a continued climb, I can see where we will probably be in two years, because I've seen it three times in 20 years.

next year should be a lil better because we won't have a statue at qb..and we will have a 205lbs. back with 4.3 speed.
but 27 will be a real good year...probabaly 9-10 wins..seeing the team will be about half seniors...and I think rhule was correct when he told paul finebahm the big was the best conferance..and would need 4 play off spots minimum..

Timeouts are for:

1. The offense at the end of the half/game.
2. Defense at the end of the game in a key stop situation and/or to protect clock for the offense to have a final chance.
3. The ability to challenge.

Any other time is a breakdown. This is where Matt Rhule lives.

I am in fact telling you that there are times when you need to call a timeout in the first or third quarter. When that happens, it is not always bad game management. However, you and others act as though it is always bad game management. And complain every time a timeout is called because you believe you know what is going on in the huddle, in the booth, or wherever.

But what are we actually seeing from HCMR? Its ALWAYS in the middle of the field, problem with getting the play or players in, some discipline or execution issue. He ***** up and has to burn his timeouts.
