..where he claims Relf doesn't figure to contend for all-conference honors.

If Relf stays healthy, it's a foregone conclusion he'll contend for all-conference honors.

Didn't work out so well. There is a lot of game film on Relf for this year. Last year teams only had the Egg Bowl to go off of and he pretty much ran it everytime in that game. Coaches will study the film on Relf and it will be much harder for him this year. I am not saying he won't do well or anything I am just saying that nothing in the SEC is a foregone conclusion.

Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Michigan only had game film from the Ole Miss game the season before? You would think this day in age they could have watched the previous games we had played last year. Maybe I'm the only person with access to espn3. Who knows.

...if I were an Ole Miss fan, I would currently be hiding under the bed instead of going on my rival's messageboard giving the Ole Miss side of the story when it comes to Chris Relf.

Relf had success last year because coaches only had film from the 2009 Ole Miss game.

Relf's last 3 games of last seasonwere the best games of his career, soyour whole argument of "coaches couldn't watch much film other than the Egg Bowl" is completely wrong.

I don't run and hide just beacuse we had a ****** year. I married a msu grad and will be going to an msu household this weekend for Easter. All I said was nothing is a given in the SEC. Oh an by the way Masoli did lead the offense to average 30 points a game which is more than what Relf and msu scored last year. Ya'll just had a better defense a much better defense than we did.

That's why he played 2009 scared. You can never play QB with a fear of the rush. Snead turned into a head case when his situation was no longer perfect.

The difference for Relf is he's not a pocket passer. He did lose the two most important O-linemen though, so that's going to be the biggest adjustment for him. He doesn't rely too much on his WRs since he's not a pocket passer, and he's not asked to make any complicated reads or throws. He returns the most important skill player for his skillset (the RB position). The OL is going to be a big question for him, but I don't think he'll lose his head like Snead did, because the style of offense he plays in doesn't leave him open to that type of pressure.

And I do agree, that with the loss of our C and LT, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to what I'm assuming will be an OL that doesn't protect him as well as it did last year.

I never said he was good because of the lack of game film. I said that since there is more game film of Relf it will be harder on him to succeed this year. That is all. Yes coaches could watch previous games but now they have film with Relf against their team and they can break that down. Ask any coach the more film you have on a player the better you can prepare for them. Relf is proven he is a good QB I am not taking anything away fom him and what he has achieved. All I am saying is once you are a known proven player teams will game plan for you differantly. Relf may very well be 1st team All SEC I don't know but to say it is a given that he will contend for it.Nothing is a given in the SEC and that is all I was saying by using a former OM QB that had everybody saying 1st round draft pick and all of that. It doesn't always work out that way.

... you trot out the false equivalence between Snead & Relf then get taken behind the woodshed over it.

Snead was a pure drop back passer whose ability was greated exaggerated by a very good OL & Mike Wallace.

Relf doesn't have a WR close to Mike Wallace to work with, yet the loss of Derek Sherrod is a big concern.

Unless Sherrod's replacement is the football equivalent of Jonathan Ogden, Relf will use his scrambling ability & Mullen's bubble screens to remain one of the best QB's in the SEC.

Relf had his 3 best games against 3 of the worst passing defenses in the country. Teams were trying to stop the run and make Relf throw. People didn't expect him to pass alot. Relf only threw the ball 220 times last year and most of those came in the last 3 games.

I simply stated it would be harder for him this year because coaches are going to gameplan for him more now than before. That is all. I even stated that I think Relf is a good QB and that I am not trying to take away anything that he has done. Look I am not going to blow sunshine up ya'll's *** and say Chris Relf is the greatest but I never said he sucked or is going to suck. That is what I ment about twisting my words.

..how a perennial offensive powerhouse like Ole Miss can be 2-4 vs. Vanderbilt since 2005 remains one of the great mysteries of college football.

because when he does freak out in the pocket, it just leads to him taking off to run, which isn't always a bad result with his skillset. Meanwhile, when Snead freaked out in the pocket, it led to one of two things: 1) him curling up in the fetal position waiting to be hit, or 2) throwing the ball up for grabs usually in Shay Hodge's direction.

Pocket presence is something I don't believe can be taught. Masoli actually had pretty good pocket presence. He was a running QB, but he felt pressure well, and when he did flee the pocket he kept his eyes down field. He didn't just lower his head and run, and most importantly he was willing to take a hit. Eli had the best pocket presence I've seen from a QB at Ole Miss. Obviously he was just a good QB too, but his pocket presence was natural. He felt the rush well, and when it collapsed (as it often did for him), he did a good job getting outside the tackle box to throw it into the seats. Also, he wasn't afraid to stand in and take one under the chin if that's what it took for him to be able to get the ball away.

You have to have decent instincts at QB. That, or you have to play with a great OL and playmakers outside so that you don't have to worry about using your instincts. Snead's instincts were about like my wife's sense of direction. If he needed to go right, he'd go left. If he needed to hold onto the ball, he'd throw it.

because we played 3 horrible defenses.....or he could have just gotten better. Like I said, an Ole Miss fan will twist why he could struggle this year and a State fan will twist why he will do well.

he was making throws in the last 3 games last season that he was missing in the first half of the season. It had nothing to do with the defenses. TSUN sold out against the run and Relf burned them passing the ball. Maybe they didn't respect him but he couldn't have made a lot of those throws earlier in the year.

Masoli and Eli were both brought up under different coaches (not to mention the latter is a Manning). Nutt has no track record of successfully developing a quarterback which showed when the one promising qb he has coached for more than 1 year at OM blew *** his last year. Mullen has coached a heisman winner and heisman finalist and has made poor ol 2 star Chris Relf into an above average SEC quarterback. Urban might have built the car for the offensive system, but Mullen was the engine.. as shown in UF's decline in offensive production under Urban after Mullen left. Snead's instincts declined because he had no directional support to help him improve.

Ole Miss averaged 399.9. And State shut their offense down a couple games and just ran the clock out. While Ole Miss was in 2 minute offense several times. You lose again.

If a guy melts under pressure, he melts under pressure. If a guy has ice water in his veins, he just does. That's not coaching.

Mullen had absolutely jack **** to do with Tim Tebow's confidence level as a QB. Obviously Tebow improved within the offense at Florida, but the confidence and leadership weren't coached into him.

You can't coach a guy to not see ghosts.

You can coach fundamentals and try to tailor your offense to fit a QB's skill set, but the only thing you can do to help a guy's confidence is try to have him as prepared as possible, and still that's sometimes not enough.

And I also disagree with why Snead's instincts declined. His instincts declined in spring practice his junior year when he watched his young OL get abused by Tillman, Hardy, Lockett, etc. He didn't have faith in his OL before the season started, and he didn't have a Wallace to open up the underneath passing game for him, which compounded the problem.

The personnel losses are the reason Snead took a step back. It wasn't that he was coached down. Anyone that watched Snead in the South Carolina game, the Alabama game, really any game his junior year could see that the change between late 2008 Snead and 2009 Snead was all between his ears.

Pocket presence/awareness is just one of those intangibles that I believe a qb developing coach can improve. Relf is losing his best offensive lineman (and backside protection) from last season, and although Relf is more of a scrambler than Snead, I fully expect Relf's passing numbers in the pocket to improve and there is no indication that shows otherwise.

Mullen got involved. He still isn't that great but the improvement in his poise under Mullen has been significant so I have to assume Mullen and Koenig get some of the credit.

you can teach QBs how to be more comfortable in the pocket. Our coaches have worked on Relf with being more comfortable and that has led to himbeing a better QB. An interview after the Gator Bowl had Relf talking about checking down and not just running with it. Perkins 70 yard reception in the Gator Bowl was from a check down.

You would think Brantley under Weiss will have a good season. If Garcia can stay sober long enough to get out of Spurrier's dog house, he should be the favorite for 1st team. I think Relf can have a better year than LSU, UM, Vandy, AU, and maybe Bama. Ark under Petrino will have a good QB.

Relf will compete for honors but he will need to have some good games against the weaker teams like Memphis to bump up his numbers. He needs to be the one throwing for 4 TDs against Memphis instead of Tyler. He looks like a lightbulb has come on with the way he has played at the end of last year and this spring.

...other than to be someone's homecoming opponent. Since you've traditionally won against lesser competition like Southern Miss and Tulane, perhaps a move to Conference USA would be advatageous. You win the Conference, you get to fill up the Liberty Bowl every year. Plus you have close rivals (Memphis State, Mississippi Southern) that would save a penny-pincher like Pete Boone lots of money when figuring out the athletic budget.

Well, for one thing, he got put in an offense that fit his skillset.

Throw Relf back into a pro style offense where he has to go through progressions, and I'll bet his pocket presence would still look awful.

The spread option style offense makes it easy on the QB. You get to mainly be a running back, and the majority of your passing offense is simplified, so you aren't making difficult throws or reads or going through progressions nearly as much.

That tends to help.

My original point, that I stand by, is that you can't teach cajones. You either have them or you don't. You see it at every level. Certain players have the ability to stand in and take a hit or the ability to feel the pressure and move within the pocket based on that pressure. Other guys panic. You can see it best usually with running QBs. If a running QB has pocket presence, like Masoli did, he can still make plays down field when the pocket breaks down. A lot of running QBs abandon the passing game the minute they feel the rush. They immediately look to scramble and find a place to run.
