I'm actually ok with this decision.
There's no clear decision here. Had Dak beaten Auburn, I think he gets the start. But since he didn't, I'm ok going with Russell. We're likely going to have a qb controversy regardless at this point. Unless Russell proves that the UM, Northwestern, and OkSt. game are the new normal (which is possible), we're not great with either qb. Russell is still the better qb, but we don't have personell to complement him and we kill him with play calling. Dak is the better fit for our system, and the play calling is much better when the coaches can take advantage of his running abilities, but although I was very happy with Dak's performance agianst Auburn, especially considering it's his first SEC start, that was still a bad team. The Russell from prior to the UM game I think beats Auburn. If we start Dak, he is likely to struggle, and I think you have to have him on a short leash when you have a qb on the bench that played great against LSU last year, even if in reality he is likely to struggle also. That's not a great recipe for Dak. I'd much rather start Russell, let him know his position as starter is secure but that Dak is going to play to let us take advantage of different styles of play. If Dak comes in and is successful, you can ride him until he's not and maybe he does establish himself as the starter.
If not, you end up with what I think is best going forward anyway: both of them playing considerable snaps in each game, with it known that unless there is just a big matchup issue with a particular team, both are going to play at least a third of the snaps. I know that may make it hard to establish a rhythm like that (especially for a pocket passer), but it might avoid both qb's pressing if it is clear it is not so much a competition at this point but a way for the team to get to take advantage of both of their strengths.
