Its tough for Buchannon, who is probably 6'5 to play the 4, which he's had to do. Boxing out doesn't allow him to disengage to attack the rebound when he's guarding bigger. Think he could outstrong guys at the lower level, not so much here.
We had 5 guys play over 20 minutes, think EO was the only one w more than 2 boards. Lino, and sometimes Davis are the only guys that are above average rebounder for their position, other than EO.

Actually, on the defensive glass (since we’re talking about defense) only Bryce and Lino had more than 2 boards… Rebounding is terrible but in some ways it’s also a catch 22 because the help defender contesting the missed shot is going to be the least likely guy on the court to get a jump on the rebound.

It’s like this. Assuming Dortch isn’t an option anywhere but 5 (that seems to be Pike’s view), Buchanan is, in fact, the best we’ve got, to play either the 3 or 4 on defense. By a pretty wide margin. Grant used to be a good offensive rebounder but hasn’t been lately. He is otherwise one of the weaker defensive players on the team unfortunately. Denis is awful on D. It’s really those 3 guys sharing SF / PF duties in combination with sliding a third guard to the 3 (which hasn’t worked great either).

That was my point, neither Dortch or Mark played 20 minutes, so the guys that did did nothing on the boards.
Early on I thought if we weren't going to give Dortch run at the 4 that DB would have to slot in there occasionally and use his strength. He can, but its tough to rebound for him against bigs. Prefer him against more pure wings, but, yeah for this team hes got to be 3/4 on D.

I think it’s hard to call individual guys out on rebounding stats. When we did contest a shot on help D, it was usually Buchanan the one doing it. If he’s the help defender on the shooter he’s probably not going to be positioned to get that rebound. I haven’t gotten around to the Pike interview someone referenced where he supposedly called out Tariq’s lack of rebounding? He’s the best finisher of the guards off of outlet passes by far so on those 3 point attempts he should be leaking out fairly often which is going to mean less rebounds for him.

All this said - in the 25+ minutes without Dortch in the game - we combined for only 4/5 total rebounds from the 3-5 positions. On paper that sounds horrendous, but then again, most of Indiana’s misses were 3s as they took like 35 of them which tend to be longer rebounds that go to guards so it might’ve been more situational in this game than anything else.

We need to rebound better for sure, but this tends to go hand in hand with better team defense on help. I’m sure the guys are aware of the holes in this area and having to be so focused on it likely slows down our jump on crashing the glass. We took for granted having the Caleb / Mag types for those years that played natural help D instinctively without thinking.
