DINWIDDIE VS. SALEM PREVIEW
I know this may appear to be a bit odd, but @southbottomU and I have agreed to do a co-preview. He will cover Salem and I will assess Dinwiddie. Both of these teams are very talented with exceptional coaches, so I really want to keep this positive.
Dinwiddie Generals: Colors Navy and White
Coach Billy Mills
Dinwiddie: 7-0 Central District, 14-0 Overall

155 points scored in the playoffs for a 39 point average
54 points given up in playoffs for a 14 point average
Totals: 674 points scored for a 48 point average, 165 points given up for a 12 point average
Turnovers 38 for 12 against +26
Team Offense:
Passing- 135/213 2355 yards 28 td’s and 5 int’s
Rushing- 396 rushes 2,955 yards, 44 td’s
Individual Stats leaders:
Passing: Witt-126/199 2,253, 26 td’s 4 int’s and qb rating of 133
Rushing: Sturdivant: 168 rushes 1,141 yards 17 td’s, Freeland 48 carries 627 yards 11 td’s
Receiving: Freeland 27 catches, 552 yards 9 td’s, Pope 27 catches 503 yards 6 td’s, Jones 31 catches 454 yards 3 td’s
Dinwiddie runs a pistol/spread offense with multi sets. The Generals usually have one in the backfield and look to run first. Counters, jet sweeps and stretch plays are their main focus in the running game. Qb Witt is deceptively fast and will beat you with a draw if its available. They utilize screens and rub routes to open up space. The Generals have very good speed and can beat you deep, but tend to stick with medium range passes a majority of the time. This team can score quickly and prey on teams that give them short fields. Defending the Generals 4 and 5 receiver sets while not forgetting the running game has been the nemesis for most teams this season. Thomas Dale, Lake Taylor and Lafayette did a sound job defensively against the Generals and kept the game within reach.
Team Defense:
I do not have team defensive stats, but I can tell you only one team (Lafayette) amassed more than 200 yards on the ground against the Generals and only Monacan passed for 200 hundred plus. The Generals don’t generally give up much on the ground or through the air and have created 38 turnovers. The Generals generally play a 4-2 or 4-3 with man to man coverage on the outside. K’vaughan Pope is both a run stopper and pass defender at the linebacker spot. Defensive ends Clayton and Fields are sound pass rushers and have combined for 21 sacks. Speed at every position, applying pressure and forcing mistakes is what makes the Dinwiddie defense tick.
Individual Stats:
Fields- 79 tackles, 41 tackles for loss and 14 sacks
J. Williams 71 tackles 6.0 tackles for loss and 1 int.
Clayton 50 tackles 28 tackles for loss and 7 sacks
Tyson 88 tackles 33 tackles for loss and 9 sacks
Pope 108 tackles 25 tackles for loss 4.5 sacks and 6 int’s.
Freeland 60 tackles 11 tackles for loss and 7 ints.
Special teams:
Punting:
Witt 11 punts, 37 yards per punt average and 7 downed inside the 20
Kickoffs
Anspach 92, 7 touchbacks
PATS/FG
Anspach 68/74 pats, 2/3 fg 38 yard long
Punt Returns
Freeland 8 for 164 yards, 15 yard average,1 td
Williams 5 for 90 yards,18 yard average, 1 td
Kickoff returns
Freeland 6 returns 45 yard average 2 tds
Williams 8 returns 18.0 yards average
Todd Anspach is the kicker. He generally sends kickoffs to the corner to help the Dinwiddie coverage team keep run backs to a minimum. Kickoff coverage has been a weakness all year for this team; however, only Lake Taylor returned one to the house. Anspach is a very reliable placekicker and the range to hit 40 yard field goals. We don’t punt much, but when we do Witt does a sound job. The return game is a strength, but most teams don’t give us the opportunity. When they did Dinwiddie took advantage by taking 4 all the way to the house.
Keys for Dinwiddie:
Offense
Establish the running game by utilizing stretch plays to get the Salem defense moving.
Force Salem to defend the screen.
Pass protect against the blitz. Salem will bring the house.
Test the Spartan db’s early and often with vertical routes and post.
Do not turn the ball over.
Open up the playbook and force Salem to defend the entire field.:
Defense
Must establish the interior line and defend the trap with discipline.
Db’s must not bite on play action passes.
Know where Tucker is at all times and give him some cushion.
Be prepared for dumps to the backs. Salem uses their backs well.
Keep an eye on the tight end. He runs very nice seam routes.
Defensive ends need to apply pressure, but contain the quarterback.
Summary: This is going to a clash of styles. Both teams like to run the ball, but are very efficient in the passing game. Salem will look to control the clock while Dinwiddie will try and keep things moving on offense. If both defenses play like they are capable I look for this game to come down to turnovers and special teams. If its a high scoring game with Salem being forced to pass I will give Dinwiddie the edge. If it comes down to a low scoring, physical affair Salem gets my nod, because they will force Dinwiddie into long drives and have the best kicker (Nate Craft) in Virginia. This kid doesn’t miss and can knock them through from 45+ yards.
I for one can’t wait. See you in Williamsburg. Your turn SouthbottomU.
