DINWIDDIE VS. SALEM PREVIEW

I know this may appear to be a bit odd, but @southbottomU and I have agreed to do a co-preview. He will cover Salem and I will assess Dinwiddie. Both of these teams are very talented with exceptional coaches, so I really want to keep this positive.

Dinwiddie Generals: Colors Navy and White

Coach Billy Mills

Dinwiddie: 7-0 Central District, 14-0 Overall

Playoff wins over: Courtland, Monacan, Lake Taylor and Lafayette

519 points scored in regular season for a 52 point average

111 points given up in regular season for a 11 point average

155 points scored in the playoffs for a 39 point average

54 points given up in playoffs for a 14 point average

Totals: 674 points scored for a 48 point average, 165 points given up for a 12 point average

Turnovers 38 for 12 against +26

Team Offense:

Passing- 135/213 2355 yards 28 td’s and 5 int’s

Rushing- 396 rushes 2,955 yards, 44 td’s

Individual Stats leaders:

Passing: Witt-126/199 2,253, 26 td’s 4 int’s and qb rating of 133

Rushing: Sturdivant: 168 rushes 1,141 yards 17 td’s, Freeland 48 carries 627 yards 11 td’s

Receiving: Freeland 27 catches, 552 yards 9 td’s, Pope 27 catches 503 yards 6 td’s, Jones 31 catches 454 yards 3 td’s

Dinwiddie runs a pistol/spread offense with multi sets. The Generals usually have one in the backfield and look to run first. Counters, jet sweeps and stretch plays are their main focus in the running game. Qb Witt is deceptively fast and will beat you with a draw if its available. They utilize screens and rub routes to open up space. The Generals have very good speed and can beat you deep, but tend to stick with medium range passes a majority of the time. This team can score quickly and prey on teams that give them short fields. Defending the Generals 4 and 5 receiver sets while not forgetting the running game has been the nemesis for most teams this season. Thomas Dale, Lake Taylor and Lafayette did a sound job defensively against the Generals and kept the game within reach.

Team Defense:

I do not have team defensive stats, but I can tell you only one team (Lafayette) amassed more than 200 yards on the ground against the Generals and only Monacan passed for 200 hundred plus. The Generals don’t generally give up much on the ground or through the air and have created 38 turnovers. The Generals generally play a 4-2 or 4-3 with man to man coverage on the outside. K’vaughan Pope is both a run stopper and pass defender at the linebacker spot. Defensive ends Clayton and Fields are sound pass rushers and have combined for 21 sacks. Speed at every position, applying pressure and forcing mistakes is what makes the Dinwiddie defense tick.

Individual Stats:

Fields- 79 tackles, 41 tackles for loss and 14 sacks

J. Williams 71 tackles 6.0 tackles for loss and 1 int.

Clayton 50 tackles 28 tackles for loss and 7 sacks

Tyson 88 tackles 33 tackles for loss and 9 sacks

Pope 108 tackles 25 tackles for loss 4.5 sacks and 6 int’s.

Freeland 60 tackles 11 tackles for loss and 7 ints.

Special teams:

Punting:

Witt 11 punts, 37 yards per punt average and 7 downed inside the 20

Kickoffs

Anspach 92, 7 touchbacks

PATS/FG

Anspach 68/74 pats, 2/3 fg 38 yard long

Punt Returns

Freeland 8 for 164 yards, 15 yard average,1 td

Williams 5 for 90 yards,18 yard average, 1 td

Kickoff returns

Freeland 6 returns 45 yard average 2 tds

Williams 8 returns 18.0 yards average

Todd Anspach is the kicker. He generally sends kickoffs to the corner to help the Dinwiddie coverage team keep run backs to a minimum. Kickoff coverage has been a weakness all year for this team; however, only Lake Taylor returned one to the house. Anspach is a very reliable placekicker and the range to hit 40 yard field goals. We don’t punt much, but when we do Witt does a sound job. The return game is a strength, but most teams don’t give us the opportunity. When they did Dinwiddie took advantage by taking 4 all the way to the house.

Keys for Dinwiddie:

Offense

Establish the running game by utilizing stretch plays to get the Salem defense moving.
Force Salem to defend the screen.
Pass protect against the blitz. Salem will bring the house.
Test the Spartan db’s early and often with vertical routes and post.
Do not turn the ball over.
Open up the playbook and force Salem to defend the entire field.:

Defense

Must establish the interior line and defend the trap with discipline.
Db’s must not bite on play action passes.
Know where Tucker is at all times and give him some cushion.
Be prepared for dumps to the backs. Salem uses their backs well.
Keep an eye on the tight end. He runs very nice seam routes.
Defensive ends need to apply pressure, but contain the quarterback.

Summary: This is going to a clash of styles. Both teams like to run the ball, but are very efficient in the passing game. Salem will look to control the clock while Dinwiddie will try and keep things moving on offense. If both defenses play like they are capable I look for this game to come down to turnovers and special teams. If its a high scoring game with Salem being forced to pass I will give Dinwiddie the edge. If it comes down to a low scoring, physical affair Salem gets my nod, because they will force Dinwiddie into long drives and have the best kicker (Nate Craft) in Virginia. This kid doesn’t miss and can knock them through from 45+ yards.

I for one can’t wait. See you in Williamsburg. Your turn SouthbottomU.

Will probably do this in multiple post as I don't think I have the time right now to do it all. Salem scored 468 points during the regular season for a 46.8 average. They gave up 138 points for a 13.8 average. But the scoring stats and defensive regular season stats are deceiving for both teams. Salem only had three games during the regular season that the starters played significant minutes during the second half. Seven of the ten regular season games were over at half time, I am sure that is true for Dinwiddie also. Both teams could have named the score in numerous games. During the playoffs Salem is averaging 40.3 and is giving up 17.6 Also remember Salem has played one fewer game than Dinwiddie because of the difference from east to west in the playoff system
Salem had a bye.
Salem offense: the last few years the strength of Salems offense has been it's balance. This team wants to run the football but they can really throw it, especially out of play action. They mostly play out of the I or split back set with a true fullback (rare these days ). However, they will go to the spread with one back out of the shotgun when teams stack the box. This version of the Spartans especially likes the spread. Salem's qb has a big accurate arm. He can throw deep and outs very well especially to Tucker, but Salem has a number of good receivers. He has excellent speed
Salem does what Salem does. They are not flashy. They rely on execution. The game may be determined by many factors, but in my mind one of the big ones will be what Salem does on third down. If the Spartans use their execution to consistently convert, they will really help themselves, because they will keep the explosive Dinwiddie offense off the field and shorten the game. A good example of this was last week when the Spartans received the second half kickoff up 21. 7. They converted numerous third downs and when they scored going up 28. 7 there was less than Five minutes left in the quarter----the game was over.

I will talk about Salem defense in a later post. Hopefully someone will come up with individual stats as i do not have access to them.

Just a PS on Salem offense. The loss of Ramsey has had an effect. Salem is not as explosive with their run game. The two backs that have replaced him are nice high school backs, but do not have the size, speed or vision of Ramsey. This has put a premium on execution and an increase in the use of the fullback. Long drives more often now as compared to fifty yard runs. Now Salems explosiveness comes more often with the passing game. However, the team took on the challenge of losing a talented player and have played their best football since his departure.

Salem's biggest improvement through the season has been on defense. At the beginning of the year Amherst ran the ball on Salem and then hit them with a few passes. Salem blew a lot of assignments that night. Since then they really improved against the run and there are much fewer blown assignments (though I did see a blown coverage in the 4th quarter against Dominion). Salem usually plays a 5-2. Fox, one of the linebackers is the key. He is committed to Richmond and is a fine player ( He also plays fullback). The secondary changes their coverage from game to game and during the game, but they are mostly in man ( I have seen them in two deep zones, and in a single safety coverage). Relatively speaking they are a small defense. They rely on speed. Salem will have to stop Dinwiddie's big plays and make them go on long drives. This would shorten the game and run the clock. Salem will want this game to get into the 4th quarter low scoring and close. At this point the Spartans experience and kicking game might help them.

Special teams for Salem. Salem has an excellent kicker. If has just a little wind behind him he will kick it into the endzone. But when he doesn't the kick coverage has been excellent. Kick returners are dangerous, especially Tucker. Salem's kicker has kicked a 49 and 43 yard field goal this year. He is a weapon. Salem like Dinwiddie did not punt much this year. Beckley is the punter and does an adequate job, but he is not a weapon as a punter. Probably averages around 37 yards (guess).

Keys to the game:. Some are obvious like turnovers and penalties. But here are some more
1. Can Salem play Smash Mouth football with a smattering of play action passes and move the ball and run the clock.

2. Can the Salem offensive line get to Dinwiddies linebackers and allow some large chunk yardage.
3. Can Salem recognize and handle Dinwiddies screen game.
4. Can Dinwiddie get a few deep balls on the Salem secondary which has given up the occasional deep ball (two against Dominion). I actually think this might be the biggest part of the game that along with Salem third down conversions.

Salems kicker, Craft has kicked off 84 times with 26 touchbacks. He is 61-63 on pats and 8-9 on fgs with a long of 49. Thats impressive to say the least. Should get a shot at the next level. Looks like both teams are in safe hands when it comes to the kicking game. Craft has the edge in big game experience and leg strength.; We feel comfortable with our young kicker Anspach and exoect him to handle the narrower goal post with ease.

This is a big deal. If Salem can keep this close, that FG kicker can have a huge impact. He may even have a big impact in just keeping close.

The kicking game is often over looked in HS Football. Salem doesn't overlook anything.

Great point Shanti. Both teams have excellent kickers and the quarterbacks do the punting. Who will fake one first? Sound kickoffs and flipping the field could be crucial in this game.

So many variables in this match up. I'll bet neither coach has slept much since Saturday. Both are unbelievable x and o guys. Chess anyone?

Was wondering when you would make an appearance. Nice highlight reel sir. I think this video demonstrates the speed this team has. It may not mean a thing against a sound Salem team, but it sure is impressive to watch. Some of the hits are unreal. Left one play out. Popes grab at Hanover. Lol. Well done. I know who you are now. Tried to get your attention at the pass gate, but you were busy chatting.

I did not make the highlight reel. This is the work of Zeek Pittman. He does a great job of getting all the action! I simply found it on youtube and posted it. Got me pumped up watching it. Should be a good one Saturday! Looking forward to it! COUNTRY BOYS!

The following opinion is based on seeing Salem play multiple times in person and Dinwiddie on video as opposed to live. I offer that qualification because, in my opinion, the film(all 22) can only convey so much while a live view often can provide a differing perspective. For me the game boils down to which team is more successful in playing to their offensive strengths. For Salem, I think sustained, ball control drives are a huge advantage to them getting a W while Dinwiddie's success hinges more on putting their playmakers in one on one situations with the Salem DB's either through the vertical passing game or quick screen game. I am still a defense wins championship believer but, in the case of this matchup, the team more successful in playing to their offensive strengths will have a better shot to neutralize the other defense, in my opinion.

I think the early part of the game will be huge. If Dinwiddie jumps on Salem early Salems game plan will be difficult to accomplish. If it stays close, Salem is in good shape, if Salem scores early they will be in great shape

The last practice of the season today and the game plans have been finalized. Tomorrow both teams will lay it on the line for a state title.

Reports from the Dinwiddie camp indicated they practiced all week on field turf and adapted well. The Generals looked fast, prepared and focussed on the task at hand.

I hope for a well played, hard hitting, and exciting final. Go Generals! May all players coaches and fans have a safe trip.

Going to be real cold tomorrow night - in the upper thirties going down in the upper 20's by the end. Windy today and maybe tomorrow. Being on turf will be different- everything is faster and those defensive stops going wide on grass are different. Interesting to see who benefits - I think Dinwiddie will benefit the most with their natural speed on both sides of the ball. Predictions are crazy to do but I see Dinwiddie winning 35-17. Best of luck and travels to all!

Yeah its going to be nasty, but not nearly as bad as 2013. Sleet, rain, and cold....... I think the turf will be a benefit to Dinwiddie as well. Like your score too. Would be very happy with that result. Salem has only given up more than 22 once (Amherst). The Dinwiddie team scores in all areas, so it can happen. Will need turnovers and short fields to reach 35. Hope Salem cooperates. Lol....

Dinwiddie on turf is a scary thought. I will take Dinwiddie 38-24. I think Salem will be able to move the ball on the Generals. However, I think Dinwiddie is one TD better on offense and a pick 6 or special teams td on top of it.

I will say this, if it is indeed super cold and windy... That really changes things. I think a strong wind hurts Dinwiddie more than it hurts Salem in terms of offensive production.

Good luck to both teams. To be a state champion is an honor and a monumental achievement.

Winds to be 5-10 mph, just enough to cause some issues, the cold will be! Last year on Saturday the high here was 70!!!

Cold may be an issue holding onto the ball as weather all year has been upper 40's and above- now in low 30's- may some turnovers! Passing for Dinwiddie- no real problem, your QB throws hard and accurate and on a straight line, no wonder he only had 6 ints in 14 games.

You are correct about Witts arm strength. Look for Dinwiddie to use short post, rubs and screens to create space against an aggressive and disciplined Salem D. No big deal, but Witt only threw 4 interceptions. Two in one game against Thomas Dale. I think both Witt and Beckley are very smart game managers.

Been watching a fair amount of video. Offensively Dinwiddie is similar to G. W Danville two years ago. Good quarter back, that runs things out of the spread, who can throw and run. Dinwiddie has more good receivers than What Danville had. But the similarities end on defense---- Dinwiddie much better than that GW team

Implying nothing more than Dinwiddie on film offensively looks like that Danville team but with more good receivers. Defensively much much better. I believe that is exactly what i wrote. I made no assertion of out come. If I was a bookie I would say Dinwiddie favored by 9. You must be a little paranoid tonight

Well there goes the neighborhood. Damn, I was a bit curious about your film study and how you thought we matched up. You compared Dinwiddie to the 2014, GW Danville team, Salem defeated and basically left it there. Respect your opinion, so wanted more.

I am not worried or paranoid. The Salem tradition is well respected, but not intimidating to Dinwiddie players, coaches or fans. We dont have the mystique of the Spartans, but many forget we have a bit of tradition ourselves. Dinwiddie played and lost in the 2000 (Heritage NN) and 2005 (Phoebus) 5a finals. The Generals also lost in the 5a semis to Phoebus and Patrick Henry Ashland. After falling short several times it was nice to finally win one in 2013.

This should be a great game. Win or lose both teams have once again flexed their muscles and made it to the final. Since realignment, there have been 3 different champions in 4a. Tomorrow someone will have two.

I think the Generals are way too physical for the Spartans. I could be wrong. Salem is obviously a darn good team with tradition but they are explosive and their defense will try to put you in the hospital (not literally) with the smash mouth style. I say Dinwiddie 36 Salem 20

Very rarely does Salem get out physicalled.. Now I do see an outcome where Salem just can't match up with Dinwiddies speed and athleticism.
