Regardless of what anyone here says, tailgating at the Grove is, in fact, fun. Is it one of the Top 50 things to do in this country. Holy ****, no. But maybe it's because I've tailgated up there so much that I do not see the novelty in it.

I sat up there all day tailgating pre Egg Bowl 2010 in my wifes family tent... It was ok... Nothing special. Maybe I just dont get it. I dont know. I had more fun tailgating with DS and the General before the Bama game 09 (i think).

Egg Bowl Grove is the exception due to Thanksgiving.

Go for a game in late Oct or Early November when it's somewhat chilly, and perhaps they're playing LSU.

Top 50 activity in America? No, but the Grove is badass.

To be honest... I probably wont ever go back up there... The drive from Meridian was painful... I hate OM fans... They hate me...

Ill just pass on future trips.

Sounds more like an issue of the people you were with

Not a slight against your in-laws, but tailgating with friends will generally trump tailgating with family. Though certain families I'm sure love to throw-down.

The Grove is fun. It's no longer as unique as it once was, with the Junction being essentially the same thing. However, both places are fairly unique amongst the whole of the college football landscape.

Tailgating anywhere not called a parking lot is fun...

...and even that can be fun, too.

Agreed, Thanksgiving tailgates anywhere pretty much suck. I've been to Oxford, Starkville and Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl and they all suck on that Friday/Saturday. Actually, suck is a strong word. 'Not as fun' is more like it.

the Grove is badass.

Why is the Grove badass compared to any other SEC tailgate? I honestly don't get it. It's nice to have a big grassy area and for the tents to not be spread out, and having oak trees is definitely nice, but overall, it's just tailgating. It's "neat" because it's a (very) little different from other tailgating scenes, but it doesn't seem that special.

I personally think the junction is set up better. The way the walkways and tents are set up in the grove suck. No telling how many people I've run in to or has run in to me from popping out of nowhere because of the walkways.

The peripherals of the Junction to me are better than the actual Junction. Or I am just getting old.

To me - the best spot is right by the Cullis Wade Depot.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. I have tailgated at the grove several times with my in laws being ole miss fans. The only real difference I have noticed is the amount of people poured into one place. That's about it. You can't even take an effing grill, without a grill it's just not tailgating to me. Just my two cents

Well... They have a pretty good set up. Its the inlaws and say five or six other familes that run six or eight tents together. They run a buffet style table with all kinds of food. Like I said... It was ok. I didnt have any issues with anyone in red and blue in or around their tent area, but outside of that... What I saw was the worst of college athletics. 17em... They can have the grove.

I am not going to argue about the grove vs the Junction. It is a feeble argument and one that will never end because it is completely subjective. However, I will say that one of the major difference between OM and State, at this point in history, it that OM has journalism department that puts their alumni in the media and enables them to get on lists like this one. The town of Oxford and the OM have marketed themselves and created a perception about themselves, that true or not, benefits that university greatly.

Perception is reality until proven wrong, and to my knowledge no one has found a way to prove that the Grove isn't fun. People from Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, and everywhere else have never been to MSU or OM, but because OM and the Grove consistently show up on lists like this one, people from those areas have the perception that OM is an elite place and better. If you don't think this helps with recruiting and out of state interest, then you are an idiot.

MSU and Starkville people need to understand this if we want to see things change.

I love the theory that our journalism department is responsible for all of the accolades for the Grove and Oxford. This must be why all schools with strong journalism departments are known nationally for their tailgating and quaint college town environments. "How to Promote Ole Miss/Oxford/The Grove in the National Media" must be a really good class.

The reason large universities in other states don't bost about their town square and picnicing is because other universities are in much larger towns with numerous other things going AND a winning tradition in most sports that speaks for itself. They don't have to say, "Hey, look at our wonderful picnic."

Also, do you really believe there is ANYTHING special about a town square in approximately a town of 10K. Hell, I would say New Albany's downtown is "quaint". OH, you have a damn restaurant on the square. So 17n what. What little bitty *** podunk MS town doesn't.

30,000 chicks in sundresses

At least that's my favorite part. All SEC schools have hot chicks. All chicks look better dressed in a short sundresses with their sweater puppies hanging out. So when all the girls at the game dress up, it's a win

You should try reading what I wrote again, and if it’s still not clear, have someone explain it to you. My point was simply that it’s naive to believe that all of the articles praising the Grove and Oxford are the result of Ole Miss’ journalism department. Whether or not those articles have merit is open for debate. You obviously are in the camp that believes the Grove/Oxford are overrated. Congratulations. I don’t care.

I've never been to the Grove so I have no idea whether I'd like OM's "tailgating" better, or ours. But I think it's probably safe to say that both are head and shoulders above other conferences.

Only problem is, they don't do that in November

You have to go to the early games when the weather's warm.

I was there for the Texas game, which I'm guessing is on the opposite spectrum of going for thanksgiving. I didn't see what was the big deal. Everyone had TV's and minded their own business. The only enjoyable part of the whole weekend was when I got to talking to this old man in line for the restroom who asked me why a State fan was there, and after I told him I was there to steal their women he invited me and my buddies back to his tailgate and gave us a ton of food and beer. He told us he never attended UM but had tickets because he lived close and it was something to do.

Absolutely nothing I could have done anywhere else. I'm not saying MSU's tailgating is better, but the Grove is overrated. I've had more fun at LSU doing kegstands in front of cops at 18 and Alabama where they don't really give a **** either. Cops were out in full force both times I've tailgated at UM.

This. Like I said earlier, both schools have tailgating that is unique when considered against the whole of the college landscape. Both of our tailgating atmospheres are better than most other schools. It's not that other schools don't tailgate, but not many do it in a centralized location where everyone can party together like the MS schools.

I've never been to the Grove so I have no idea whether I'd like OM's "tailgating" better, or ours. But I think it's probably safe to say that both are head and shoulders above other conferences.

Whoever said the Grooooooove's novelty wears off hit the nail on the head. My brother went to UM and I went to several tailgates there. Been to Egg Bowl and non-Egg Bowl games. It's neat how it's a ton of people crammed into one spot, but that's the most it has going for it. From the whole place being muddy if it rained the day before (10x worse than it gets in the Junction) to having the whole crowd squeeze through a 2 meter wide alley to get to the stadium (if you actually go to the game), the place certainly has its drawbacks. It's certainly in the top 3 or 4 tailgating spots, but I think the Junction puts State up there too now (we were certainly in the bottom 3 or 4 before the Junction). I personally like the Junction more because you can get the crowded experience along with the laid back grilling out and playing some cornhole experience without really having to go that far. Sure the Junction doesn't have the history, but if I'm going to eat, imbibe, and engage in tailgating related activities for several hours before and after a football game, I really don't care how much fun people had ten, twenty, or fifty years ago.
