Just another example of why it takes time for players to adapt to a new coach and role.

I feel like this was sort of true for the Willard / Whitehead PG dynamic.

Isaiah had a solid freshman year but didn’t really turn the corner until a couple of checkpoints in his sophomore year.
The first for me was his game against USF. Solely focused on being a distributor that day and embraced the concept of being a PG.

But it wasn’t until after the starters got benched at home vs Creighton that he really took off.

from that game on through the BET he went
21 PPG : 5.7 APG : 4.5 RPG and shot 42% from 3.
Many people forget that because of promises made to Jaren Sina, he not Whitehead played the point for most of the season. For some God forsaken reason Whitehead played the three most of that year and Carrington came off the bench while Gibbs played the 2.

The locker room knew that was wrong and the chemistry was not good because of it. That had a lot to do with the poor performance of the team that year.

Reality is we played our best ball without whitehead during that first season. Wins over ranked SJU and nova around New Years when whitehead was injured

No doubt Whitehead would have left after his freshman year at SH if the current transfer rule was in place. The drama surrounding his arrival was absurd. Also, benching him in 2026 wouldn't have been an option unfortunately, as it eventually helped him & the program.
