Do you think there will be a day where all players will look out for one another and collectively all players enter the portal even if they have no intention of moving? This way there isn't a negative mark on a player who enters the portal to see what they are worth.
I don't think so. Also, I doubt these players are too concerned that some fans view their entering the portal as a negative mark, as you put it.

They are just doing what they believe is in their best interest.

It really illustrates that, with the current rules, the most important recruits are the players currently on your roster.

Good luck to Cam. He will soon be forgotten as we continue to recruit up

“Who was that 3 point shooting white kid? Hit the big shot against Purdue? Sounded like ‘Simpson’ but wasn’t him…”

Give it a few years and that 100% will be me. LOL

I was referring to his exit. I thought you were too when you said he didn't do anything wrong.
Oic. I still don't think he did anything wrong by leaving. The timing definitely sucked for Rutgers.

Spencer came to Rutgers, he played well & he graduated. At some point after the season he decided it was in his best interest use his final season of eligibility elsewhere and entered the transfer portal.

With the advent of the transfer portal, players have zero obligation to tell their coach they want/plan to transfer. They just give a written request to enter the portal to their school's compliance department.

As the saying goes: Don't hate the player, hate the game.

It sucks ,but it's the way things are done now. College basketball is being destroyed just like most other sports now a days. I can't really blaime the players I would do the same thing. They have tovget it while they can.

At least in leadership circles I know in the business world…former student athletes are held in high regard for their work ethic, accountability and understanding of team. It’s been discussed in hiring decisions.

Do they get that same allure in the new world here?

Work ethic still there sure. But without ethic of committed to the team, just like any other gen-zer. I could see that whole allure being tainted. Which is probably more detrimental to most of these kids, since most of their lifetime earnings will happen in their 30-40 years of working after they leave athletics.

Cam didn't do anything wrong but the timing was awful. It was mid May and he had stated just a short time before that he was staying. He left Pikiell and our team at a very bad point. some people work at a place with true loyalty knowing that money isn't everything. Cam though ran to the money and didn't show real loyalty to RU. Little kids loved him and many of us considered him our favorite player. He worked so hard usually being the first one at the practices and the last one to leave. He was always so friendly to me and always had a smile. I don't hold anything against him but I know I loved my job for 36 years and I never wanted to leave from there. Loyalty isn't the same for everyone and Danny stuck it to RU a few times. It hurts for him to have chosen U Conn. I doubt he will get 31.5 mpg there.

THE RUTGERS FAN GUIDE TO HOW TO REACT TO A PLAYER TRANSFER

Player A
who is NOT a key component to RU basketball, or who may have served the team well but time to more on from and now transfers out = "Good for him, best of luck"

Player B who we COVET for a position of need and transfers in to RU from another program = "Great Job Pike and those who donated to NIL to make this happen...good thing we have the transfer portal to fill roster gaps"

Player C who is a producing player for RU and who we COVET but transfers out = "NIL will destroy college sports! and change the Transfer portal rules!!"

JY was not a total surprise though if I recall correctly.

Cam is getting a similar reaction to EO … and deservedly

Cam and EO can both **** themselves

Myles and mathis - I legitimately wished them well

Young was somewhere in between - I mean he didn’t go leaving a warm fuzzy feeling yet he didn’t **** RU over like cam and EO. So his departure was kinda neutral in my mind

JY announced he was not returning to Rutgers immediately following the season. Obviously when he later entered the portal and chose a different school It was disappointing as a Rutgers fan (most of us figured he was going to go pro) but he didn’t do wrong by Rutgers in any way.

Cam could’ve (should have) done something similar. All he had to do was make it known upfront that he was assessing his options for after his anticipated graduation from RU in May. And not accept admission to our grad school only to later rescind.

Why mislead Rutgers nation? I guess he just wanted to eliminate the distraction of any awkwardness for himself throughout the months leading up to graduation. With that decision, he hurt Rutgers in my opinion. Because if his potential departure had been known much earlier, we probably would’ve secured another kid from the portal by now.

thanks for the clarification. now that you explain the JY situation - thats how I remember it now. exactly.

bottom line: Cam chose to go a certain route that was 100% was self-serving without a single care to how it might f@#k Rutgers (his coaches and teammates). Thanks Cam!!

He transferred to UCONN guys for probably substantial NIL. He wants a shot at winning a championship. Not likely to happen at RU next year (after that, who knows). Ok, so he left late in the process. UCONN came calling. That's how college ball works today. I for one wish him well at UCONN. We would have been a basement team without him last year.

The Star Ledger on June 8,2023 had a college basketball article written by Brian Fonseca and Adam Zagora.''Spencer had the best shooting season of any Scarlet Knight from beyond the arc and the free throw line in nearly a decade."Sometimes its worthwhile to have an outside perspective about the performance of a Rutgers player who has left the school.

since he was in the portal at the time and wasn't really expected back , the Ledger did wat it usaly does:
put out a piece that makes an RU program look like it is in trouble.
Cam was a one year rental that worked out well, but not the savior some ty to make him to be.
He was a big part of winning, but not the only asset that helped RU win.
Spencer did what was needed and that helped get the wins

No - technically that’s not what happened. UConn entered the picture after he decided to auction himself off. Which was fine that he did that. Just not in mid-May after already long before accepting RU grad school admission. This is the issue. Not the fact that he decided to leave Rutgers.

We missed the tournament and finished mid-league with him. He had a couple really great games and disappeared in others. He thought he was too good for RU. Maybe he’s right. I don’t wish him ill but I won’t be cheering him on either.

Either way, I am 100% confident with will have a better conference record this year than we did last year.

Griffiths will make you quickly forget about Cam. Not down the road, but this season. I have talked with Uconn fans, who somehow feel Cam transfer makes up for "stealing" Griffiths from his home state..??
Cam racked up numbers against the cupcakes, and had some early Big Ten Success. In the end, he did not contribute enough for this team to remove doubt from the committee.
The offense will still be drastically better, and this team will comfortably make the tournament.

The Ledger has provided very good & fair coverage of us.
