Should we sacrifice this game to be 'up' for Texas A&M?

I mean, really, what's our chances playing at Tuscaloosa vs. their refs in a game where they most likely won't be overlooking us. They may, seeing they have LSU last week, but this is a home game sandwiched between 2 away games. Saban's teams don't get 'up' or 'down' either, he'll tell you he steers away from momentum and prefers consistency. Any turnovers or big plays we make will result in a phantom flag.

At this point, to go 10-2, we really need to be focusing on Texas A&M and Arkansas. I just can't see any way we leave Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge with a win. Death Valley actually seems more friendly to me than Tuscaloosa.

Need to intelligently approach these next 5 games. Getting 'up' for the Egg Bowl is going to be a task in and of itself.

Sure, if you're satisfied with playing for second place or worse the rest of your life... loser. Sacrificing this game = quitting. We don't quit.

Well, I'll risk catching hell for saying this and maybe I'm mistaken BUT it seems to me that Jackie kind of took that approach at times. He did say that it wasn't realistic to expect a team to get emotionally high for more than about three games a year. I always thought that he would not put as much emphasis on the Arkansas and LSU games as some other ones but that's just a hunch. I don't mean imply that he didn't care about winning them but that he looked at the odds and played the percentages. It worked at times. Having said that, I don't think we should ever intentionally "throw" a game and don't believe that Jackie did either. But he would say that we needed to win by month. In other words he would say "well we have three games the month of September so we need to win two."..blah blah blah...maybe not the same thing you're saying.

what do you mean sacrifice? I don't think we win it either, but you gotta go out and try to win it. If we somehow pull the upset, it sets us up for National Championship talk...did you read that...National Championship talk. Rolling over for Bama wouldn't guarantee a win over aTm anyway. I'm not shocked at this thread bc we have some dumb17 fans, but I must say, this is terrible.

14-0, SEC and national champs until proven otherwise. This undefeated team will have no problem getting "up" for any of the next 6 (or 7) games.

Even with a loss, they have climbed high enough now that each game is its own motivation.

Bull, he couldn't beat LSU, no matter who he coached for. Don't know why, he just couldn't. I believe those were the games he was talking about getting emotionally high for. The rest of them he believed you had to beat on talent alone.

What a dumb 17ing post. I'm quite sure there won't be a more dumb post this week than this one and that's saying something because this board has gotten to where it can generate some crazy ****. Seriously, where do some of you dumb 17'ers come from? What's sad is some of you have a degree from our school and yet you generated jewels like this. Damn...just damn. We are ranked in the top 15 in the nation, are playiing the #1 team in the nation in a national tv game, and somehow you want to "throw" the game so we can get ready for the one AFTER this??? Regardless of what you may feel our chances are, you give it all you have and approach it like a winning, championship program...not the loser program someone like you apparently aspires to have. I'm ashamed your that stupid. If you are going to post stupid stuff like this...well...just don't.

You are a 17ing idiot... Never in my life did I ever think I'd see someone not want to see their team give it all they could to potentially play for a championship over going 10-2... You really are one of the worst posters I've ever seen here, Goat.

I made a post like this during basketball season after we had lost 4 straight (that we needed and should have won) and needed to get back on track. I said we should, not concede, but worry about winning the games we needed to win (Bama, USCe, Arky) and not worry as much about UK. Completely different situation because we were trying to save face with a tourney berth and needing to get back on track to save our season.

However, This ain't Stans with UK in basketball. We are undefeated headed into a really big game at Alabama. We will have a tough time winning, but Mullen will prepare for Bama just like we have for every game up to this point.

Quit thinking so much. Don't change what you are doing. Prepare for Bama just like you have every team to this point, but don't let emotions blow out of proportion. That will allow you to come back next week ready to work and prepare for A&M. That's the key.

This Bama team is mortal...

unlike the previous two years. I do wish we played A&M at home before we went to Bama, but we don't. To suggest that we concede this game to get ready for A&M makes no sense. This is arguably one of the biggest games we've played in the last 10 years. Why would you want to take that away from the fans and the players?

You should suggest this to Dan on Dawgs Talk this week.

So we could witness the response. What we saw on the sideline throughout much of the game last night would probably be mild in comparison to his response to this idea.

No. You play to win, always. If you play to win and lose then you lose but not trying is just plain stupid.

Except for not looking all that hot (for a dominant #1 team) against Ole Miss, why do you think they are mortal? They've beat the ever-lovin' **** out of every team they've played except Ole Miss. And they handled them pretty easily. We are the best team they've played, but damn they're tough on both sides of the ball (with a very dangerous return game). Regardless of what Saban says, they do get up for certain games. I think they're up for this one. We will have to get some breaks and make some tough plays to even stay in it.

I think I understand what you're saying:

It's like asking, should your dad have pulled out so that he could have a shot the next week of making a kid that's not an imbecile?

What are we trying to do, make the 17ing playoffs?? We play to 17ing win. God, this post turned my stomach. Idiot.

I'll pile on because I think it's warranted

Let's see here- this is wrong on SO many levels.

1. You play to win the game. Ask Herm Edwards.

2. Part of the reason we wanted to schedule "easier" teams was so that we would have a better chance to beat people like Alabama. Giving less than 100% for this game would sort of defeat the entire purpose of what we have been doing for seven games not to mention the off season ever since the end of the Music City Bowl.

3. Sends the wrong message to your team and your fanbase. And everyone else associated with MSU. It would be embarrassing to the University because the football team- win or lose- should be expected to put forward their best effort every Sat. that they play. If you are Dan, you can't preach relentless effort and then give less than 100% because it might help you win the next game.

4. Who knows? Bama may play their worst game of the year and we might upset them. Why take a chance on pissing that away give less than our best effort. That's why you- see number one.

5. IF- and it may be ten percent or less chance- we upset them, it would be HUGE for Mississippi State football. It might be the biggest win in school history. Scott talks about exposure- that to me is the best exposure our football program and university can get- we just beat number one on the road.

6. We'll worry about A&M next week. When we play them.

I agree with your assessment...

but they are young in the secondary and TN is the best offense that they have faced this year. No doubt we will have to play our best game of the year and get a few breaks to win. They have lost 8 first round draft picks the last two years and it has taken a toll, but they are still damn good.

Not as young as you might think, though I feel CB Belue (#13) is probably our weakest link... he's a JUCO with 7 starts, CB Millner (JR) and Lester (SR) have started/contributed greatly ~3 years each & both have a good chance to be 1st rounders, and Sunseri (SO) could be considered a 2nd year starter.. he's under-rated and a baller... 6 Ha Ha Dix (SO) and 26 Collins (FR) are (young) stars in the making.

If I were Mullen, I would try to isolate Bumphis with Belue...

So by this logic...

we should have forfeited to MTSU so we could spend two full weeks prepping for Bama. We were already bowl eligible, and if we are 8-0 in conference games, the out of conference games don't matter.

As a matter of fact, we should just forfeit ALL of our non-cons and spend the extra time practicing.**

Way to think like a MSU fan...

...Let's see: Thanks to a perfect alignment of the stars & the burial ground indians taking the year off, MSU is 7-0 going into a Bama game. Both teams are highly ranked, with Bama being #1. The SECW title is on the line. BCS bowl implications are on the line. This is something that happens to MSU only once every hundred years, yet you want to sacrifice this historical achievement for the "next game." Congratulations. Only a MSU fan could embrace such a thought process.

I'm assuming this is what we did.

The whole point of the whole season is this game. Period.

You have bought into all the bs everybody or at least most people are saying. "Their is no way msu can beat bama" don't buy into it. Let the game play out. Just maybe state is better than you think (if you are a msu fan). I think our team has a shot. Why would you throw a game? This is the most important game of the season. I mean you go 7-0 and you want to lay an egg on purpose. This is crazy talk.
