I remember talking to people i've never met before at the next table while eating at Applebees about the spring game..so yes, the spring game was big. Huge.

I did a quick search and this is what came back. I guess something else to argue about.

  • 1989: White 40, Red 28 — Attendance not specified in available data, but likely in the 20,000–30,000 range based on historical trends.
  • 1990s: Attendance rose steadily, with figures exceeding 40,000 by the mid-1990s. The 1995 game drew 40,000 fans, and the 1997 game reached 60,498 — one of the highest in the decade.
  • 2000s: The trend continued with strong turnout. The 2008 game, Bo Pelini’s first as head coach, set a then-record with 80,149 fans. The 2018 game, Scott Frost’s debut, drew 86,818 — the highest attendance in program history.
  • 2010s–2020s: Attendance remained consistently high, with the 2019 game drawing nearly 86,000fans. The 2023 game saw 66,045 fans, and the 2024 game drew over 60,000, with the White Team winning 25–21.
Since 2008, 825,434 fans have attended Nebraska spring games — about 40% of total attendance since 1950. The event has become a key recruiting and fan engagement tool, with large crowds reflecting the deep loyalty of Husker fans.

There was tons of seats these guys are clueless. I agree with them Rhule made a huge mistake last year but acting like the attendance was massive in TOs era is stupid because it wasn’t. The OP that said attendance didn’t become a thing until Billy C is correct.
Nobody has claimed that the spring games were sell outs. They have never been sellouts. Attendance averaged out around 65,000 or so. I attended spring games in the 90’s. They were well attended. And even if the big surge in attendance happened in 2005, so what? That was still the start of something great, something fans loved, and a great recruiting tool. So why kill it? That is the main point here and not when in the f$ck it started, which is a complete red herring.

You’re fkn wrong our NC yrs had like 30 -35 k at best.,Op is right it became a big thing when Billy C came in
Who cares? Why are you obsessed with when the big surge in attendance started? It was a fun thing for the fans, and it was a good recruiting tool. So why kill it? That is the point. That Rhule canceled something that was a thing fans liked and he had zero good reasons for doing so.

Thanks for doing this research. It proves that the Spring game is a tradition that built up during the 90’s and has been something fans have enjoyed now for about 30 years. And the preacher boy decided in his infinite wisdom that it was something he could just summarily suspend. And his reasons for doing so were utter b$llcrap.

The spring game started to ramp up in the mid 90's into the 2000's. Hell, I remember damn near 50,000 at the 1997 game as well as 1998 when Bobby Newcombe was the #1 guy. It was fun back then, not so much these days.

Nonsense. Spring game attendance was a big deal going back to the Osborne era. It isn’t a huge deal, but one more indication of how clueless and arrogant Matt Rhule (aka POS) is.
How many did you go to? I went in 78 and there might have been a thousand people in the stands. Got a helluva sunburn. Sat on the 45 yard line about 15 rows up in east stadium. I’m sure attendance ramped up some in later years but it was not a big deal in the 70s that I recall.

I'm going to the spring game tomorrow. I'm going to have a good time, I'll party, I'll yell and have a great time. This probably isn't the Huskers I want and hopefully before I die I can jump up and down with my spawn and celebrate a meaningful win. I've danced to Natty's on 72 and Dodge and my adult kids are being raised right, but thank God for YouTube or they'd probably think I was crazy 🤣
