And even better, the minivan with five of those damn things on it. I would have killed my parents if they put my name on the back of their car. Plus, as John Lithgow showed us, now it's easier than ever to kidnap your children. Not to mention now I know your kids are completely unathletic when I see all are in the band or reading club.

I've never understood having some dead persons name and when they died on your rear window. Seems to be popular with folks in Water Valley and Saltiller.

I've seen vans with 4-5 of those things stuck on them - have no clue what that is.

hell in a hand basket. I've never been to a game but the way it was explained to me is that they don't keep score. Nobody wins, therefore we all lose. I liken Upward Sports to the mortgage meltdown. No one takes responsibility for their own ****. No one is allowed to fail. Horse ****.

Most high schools do that when a student dies tragically. I know JA and Lamar, among others, have made memorial stickers for students who passed away.

When my son died, i never thought about advertising it to the world by sticking his name and birth info on my car's window.
In fact, if that had been suggested, i would have thought it to be lame and tasteless.

I must be kind of a dick.

ETA- nottrying to start some bicker match here or anything, just sayinthatsomeonenot understanding the appeal of those stickers doesnt make em a dick.

Because Upward Basketball (and soccer) is HUGE with them. A friend of mine's son went out for his HS soccer team as a 9th grader this past year. He'd never played any soccer in his life except Upward Soccer, so naturally he never played except in blowouts. She told me that one day he said to her, "Momma, all that coach wants to do is win." I just laughed and said, "Yeah, that's kind of his JOB."

I've seen some of those IMO stickers so large, I'd be surprised if the driver could see out of the rear window.

To me, those stickers are just weird. Think about it. What are you doing "In Memory Of" the deceased? You're putting a sticker on your car so every driver that trails your car can learn that someone (you knew) died? I just don't get it.

I'm very practical, so I think the money would be better spent toward "finding a cure", a "preventative" program, a scholarship fund, a benevolent fund, or the cemetery maintenance fund.

Just one man's opinion...

that Upward Basketball is also a CHURCH basketball league.

I am all about being competitive and all, but I don't think it's the job of the church to produce NBA talent. This league is as much about the devotional as it is about basketball.

I will say that if I had a son or daughter that was really interested in basketball and being a good player, and is competitive, I am not going to sign them up for Upward Basketball and expect them to hone their skills. There are other leagues for that. If my son wants to hang out with his friends and have a good time and learn a little bit about basketball and the Bible, well Upward Basketball probably is up their alley, and there's nothing wrong with that.

And for the record, if I had a son that did Upward Basketball, there is no way in hell that I would ever plaster a bunch of Upward Basketball magnets on my car. And also for the record, I do not have any children, much less any that play in Upward Basketball.

What the hell is the point? I've seen several around town this week. When my mom passed away, the last thing on my mind was heading to the local auto detailer to get her name plastered on my rear window. My mom always did say I was kind of a dick though.

Small 3" decal in the right corner of the window - in bad taste.

Covering the damn windshield saying "Yeah my grandma died, I dedicate my tripped out '88 cutlass with 20" rims to her memory" - horrible,

that plays Upward basketball and I coached his team. Its a ministry more than a competitive sports venue. Its fun for the kids and we were able to witness to kids that came from very rough back grounds and were able to coach them in some fundamentals. However, it gets obvious real fast which kids only play Upward, especially in the older leagues. Basically in addition to witnessing Upward uses sports to provide an alternative activity to sitting on the couch or idle time. It is not a competitive sports league and was not meant to be. That being said, we had plenty of parents that thought their kid was the next Lebron or that took it too far. I liken them to the parent that sticks the white outline of a baseball player with their kids name and number on the back wind shield of their car.

Upward is a sports league run by churches. Like it is mentioned, they de-emphasize winning to focus more on fellowship and having fun. The whole purpose is to bring in children and parents (who other wise would not come to church) to learn about Jesus Christ. At my church, the score isn't kept on a score board. However, the kids, coaches, and parents know who won or lost. Upward is to be a mission to the communties not a development league. It is a good thing the church is doing because fewer and fewer parents are taking kids to church.

Also, most of the kids playing, are K- 3rd grade....at least where I am. So, the no-score thing is no big deal to me. But I understand the point of competition too. I agree the kids now-a-days are pampered. However, it isn't just Upward. Most city "rec" leagues have parents that are not interested in practicing, only showing up for games when it is convenient, and so on. I have seen first hand why "over zealous parents" (according to some) have to form "traveling" teams.

Doing that with family members is a little much. I was referring more to high schools that have a student pass away tragically; to me, that's OK if it helps high school aged kids grieve.

At least most people know what Upward Sports is about.

One time I volunteered to do some work with the local YMCA baseball league. I didn't really want to coach, so I did some U12 umpiring for free.

Imagine if you will.

Ball 1
Ball 2
Ball 3
Ball 4, take your base

Ball 1
Ball 2
Ball 3
Ball 4, take your base

repeat 8 or 10 times an inning. Then coaches would tell their kids to swing.

Pitch 10 feet outside, swing and miss.

Baserunning was station to station. I remember one time, a kid accidentally hit the ball in the gap. A good solid hit. The kids had no idea how to advance bases. And basic catching was non existent.

No stolen bases, that would be unfair.

But the thing about it was the coaches and parents thought this was select league. I got cursed out by a coach one time. It was the "orange team coach." for calling a kid out on a close play. Hell, the catcher actually stopped the ball, picked it up and tagged the guy. He deserved to get the out if the base runner had been safe by a mile, but he legitimately made an out. Then I started hearing crap from the stands over it. Turned out it was the coaches kid and he went to the YMCA director over it with like four parents.

but I think a big reason that they don't keep score is because of "overzealous" parents, not because the kids can't handle winning or losing or risk of getting their feelings hurt.

I think they want to make it clear that this is not AAU, and if you are a parent and still can't read between the lines, you're probably beyond help.

if you don't keep score? I'm not the one saying they're ruining america, just elaborating. Though I find it extremely lame, and would point and laugh at other kids who did that gay *** ****. Then hit them upside the head with a big red dodgeball.

comment. What do you think Select teams are? Heck, the parents of these kids are driving them to tournaments in places like D'Lo Mississippi. If your kid is that compeitive, they can go try out- and they may make the team and they may not, what's more competitive than that?- for one of those teams.

I think it's actually better now than it ever was. Heck, now that we have these select teams, I'm hearing fewer stories about the "Little League Mom" that chews her son out. That's because they're not playing rec league anymore, where the parents "don't understand that I want my son to be the best he can be". This is the best solution for all.

Your kid is serious about a sport, and wants to play and get better at it, is genuinely talented at playing that sport? Well, go here.

Your kid just wants to hang out and play baseball or whatever? Go to the rec/church league.

And it goes for coaches to. The more serious coaches are probably coaching select, and the nice guys that are volunteering their time coach rec league.

I don't see anything at all wrong with playing in a rec league. Not everybody can be LeBron James, and that doesn't mean that those that aren't should have a bad experience. And at the same time, LeBron James shouldn't be "held back" because he is that much better than everyone else.

I agree with you on the no score thing. If I ran the league, I would have them keep score so that the players can learn about what to do in certain basketball situations, and the only way you can do that is to keep score. Stuff like when to foul, when not to, stuff like that.

Sadly, a few years ago, we were not able to muster enough support from Dawgs in Alabama to get this state to issue an MSU tag.

TN has an MSU tag, I think.

if you don't have that, just go skip rope. There's no point in playing sports if you don't keep score, and learning how to compete and win is essential to life and future success. I have no problem keeping obnoxious parents out of it, even banning them for outbursts though.
