He's gotta have a new name by game day.

My suggestion: Lil Cocky.

Alternate suggestion: Bojangle (singular, not plural)

There's an article linked here: https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/drama-over-sir-big-spur-poll.403111/

Basically the old owners object to the new owners letting the rooster keep it's comb. New owners say comb is necessary to keep the animal cool. Old owners say gamecocks have combs removed. Old owners own the name, and they decided not to let the new owners use it.
Another example of people need something to argue about ( the owners that is). Those people need a damn life. I can’t wait till they stand at the pearly gates, I’m sure the question will be did you two ever get that comb situation figured out on that chicken :)

What a stupid controversy. The old owners need to get over it and let the mascot keep his name.

Paywall? I still don't understand why it is necessary to come up with a new name. Did anyone "own" the Sir Big Spur name?

Oh, weird. Wasn't a paywall for me.

Apparently the original owners had a 5 year contract that allowed the University to use the name, but that expired 8/1. I don't know if they've officially trademarked it or what. Not sure how that works. But a University rep said they would not able to use Sir Big Spur or even Big Spur b/c of legal ramifications.

I didn't even click the link, but the AD picking the name can't be good. They'll screw it up some how.

Yes, Ron & Mary trademarked Sir Big Spur, and allowed the continued use when Beth & Van took over.

Gotcha. Seems like a weird thing to trademark, but I guess they're passionate about it.
It was probably done to protect it from being used by another or others making money off SBS without R&M's knowledge/endorsement.

We can upgrade the name anyway. Sir Big Spur was pretty stupid.

Or just do away with it altogether.

I'm leaning towards "Little Jerry" myself. Wasn't "Big Spur" actually the name of one of our mascots before Cocky? Here are a couple of pics to jog some of y'alls memories.

Without being able to use that we aren't left with much. Maybe the family that trademarked it wanted a big payout from the school and USC aint having it?

Here are Cocky and Big Spur together. Interesting to note that Big Spur has a comb.
