The small forward spot HAS to be a 40%+ three point shooter. With a lineup of Moreno, Freeman/Rancik, Diallo, and Wilkins, there needs to be at least one knockdown shooter.
Well maybe we shouldn't expect him to play similarly to some of the literal greatest of all time haha.I believe KW is extremely overrated, he has zero post game and is not a slasher, he does one thing, shoot. A lot of elite SFs can score from the post, he hasn’t shown that at all. Look at Stokes, he plays in the post a lot, Vince, Stackhouse, Bron, MJ, McGrady, etc
That’s why you want Kam there. He shot something like 46% from three in conference play last year IIRC. Might be off some, going off memory. The small forward spot HAS to be a 40%+ three point shooter. With a lineup of Moreno, Freeman/Rancik, Diallo, and Wilkins, there needs to be at least one knockdown shooter.
Fair point but I’m as high on KW as village idiot is. I think it is hard to judge any individual off of last year’s team. Something was off with that group. I’m not saying it was anything nefarious but that team as a whole was dysfunctional.I like and appreciate your confidence in Williams. I really like him, too, especially his apparent love for being here and wanting to help us win. The consistency in his 3-point shooting supports the notion that he is always going to be an above-average shooter. Everybody appreciates that, I think. I am not sure, reserving the right to be wrong about it, but I see KW as a QUALITY 10-20 minute, verses a 20-30 minute, piece of a team with FF potential at the end of the year. The Darius Miller comparison is excellent, I think, and is a positive, not a negative.
There was one random off season mock...not by any major evaluator, that had him has a first rounder. I have never seen Woo, Givony, or Vecinie even have him on their mock or list. Better dribble penetration will help him but this is hopium. We have a 6'8" small forward who was getting NBA mocks in the lottery before his early season confidence issues last year. He will probably shoot about 36-42 percent from three, continue to expand his game on cutting and slashing. Love me some Kam Williams and, no, I don't think we need a small forward at all.
Obviously, Tyran Stokes is the exception. You take that player regardless of how you have to reshuffle the positions around.
Love my small forward. Go get a power forward and let's ball.
I agree with this. I like being able to use Kam at the 4. Just have to see what other pieces we have to slot in at the 3 when he’s on the court.Kam is closer to a stretch 4 than a 3.
Will need a multi dimensional 4 for this to work best as we saw defenses camping on Mo and MM last year.I don’t really think this is true. At least the part about parking on the perimeter and never moving. He is a floor spacer, yes. But it isn’t like he never cut to the basket.
It is certainly true that Oweh could do things Kam couldn’t, and vice versa. My overall point is that with two high usage PGs on the floor, we don’t need another Oweh type at the 3. Kam could definitely be a better fit for next year’s roster construction.
It was before this last disaster of a season. Several had him as first round. Some as high as mid lottery. He didn’t show that potential playing on last year’s squad but of course I hope he reaches that potential. Otherwise it’s just cynicism. There was one random off season mock...not by any major evaluator, that had him has a first rounder. I have never seen Woo, Givony, or Vecinie even have him on their mock or list. Better dribble penetration will help him but this is hopium.
I agree. If we get Stokes, Kam is primary 2g backup and 6th man. Hawthorne is SF backup.Yeah that's my read on what the staff is going for. We get Stokes or we roll with Kam and Hawthorne.
Respectfully disagree. Need 2 PF, one that can play backup center. Also add Stokes, if not, try to grab a Sf. Would like to see Kam as 6th man and primary 2g backup. I think Hawthorne is very capable of being sf backup. We need 3-4 more players at this point, two guards-wings, a center and PF, at minimum, preferably three solid post players.
Agreed, if was obvious from the beginning, last year’s team didn’t have much chemistry or fit well together. This is exactly correct. It’s HOW THE PIECES FIT TOGETHER. We always sit around and debate who’s better than the precious year and none of us have a clue. It’s always on paper until we see them together. So lineups work together and some can never get the chemistry right. .
Comparing him to the #1 ranked recruit and 5 NBA Hall of famers? Cam's role for Pope last year was to spread the floor. Pretty sure it will be again this coming season, opening up driving lanes for Zoom and Wilkins.I believe KW is extremely overrated, he has zero post game and is not a slasher, he does one thing, shoot. A lot of elite SFs can score from the post, he hasn’t shown that at all. Look at Stokes, he plays in the post a lot, Vince, Stackhouse, Bron, MJ, McGrady, etc
I agree with this. Would love a backup hybrid 4/5 option. With the C market explosion that might be why we haven’t heard of many options there.Respectfully disagree. Need 2 PF, one that can play backup center. Also add Stokes, if not, try to grab a Sf. Would like to see Kam as 6th man and primary 2g backup. I think Hawthorne is very capable of being sf backup.
I’m not sure if UCONN or Michigan had anyone that shot 40% from three. The small forward spot HAS to be a 40%+ three point shooter. With a lineup of Moreno, Freeman/Rancik, Diallo, and Wilkins, there needs to be at least one knockdown shooter.
What?! I assume this is sarcasm. Our SF position next year is as follows:
Kam/Hawthorne and then Noah.
Maybe Stokes.
Even without Stokes, we've got two great options at the wing and a third guy who's got experience in the system.
I don't see why we'd go after any portal SFs, tbh.
I don’t disagree. A multi-dimensional 4 would go a long way. Will need a multi dimensional 4 for this to work best as we saw defenses camping on Mo and MM last year.
I’m not sure if UCONN or Michigan had anyone that shot 40% from three.
They will make that flight if you pay them to. So it's been said.I actually feel better about Stokes now than I did before. If a player has no interest he doesn’t fly from Portland to Lexington. I think he comes to UK or stays at the mothership and goes to Oregon. I don’t buy the excuse of meeting coaching staff.
Haha, there are many CBB SFs that play versatile like the GOAT guys, was just tossing out names that people would immediately recognize.Well maybe we shouldn't expect him to play similarly to some of the literal greatest of all time haha.
But could he have a similar role to say...KCP? (in the pros)
A legit 3&D wing who makes winning plays. I think he absolutely can be that.
Way too small and can’t rebound at all, has the height though zero physicality, still need to be able to help some in the post as a stretch PF.I agree with this. I like being able to use Kam at the 4. Just have to see what other pieces we have to slot in at the 3 when he’s on the court.
that doesn't really make sense to me. Stokes is their #1 priority and the biggest piece of the roster they are trying to build around, If Stokes is such a huge piece, it doesn't make since to just ride with the presumed backups behind him.Yeah that's my read on what the staff is going for. We get Stokes or we roll with Kam and Hawthorne.
It does if you understand this:that doesn't really make sense to me. Stokes is their #1 priority and the biggest piece of the roster they are trying to build around, If Stokes is such a huge piece, it doesn't make since to just ride with the presumed backups behind him.
Just tossed out names many would immediately recognize, I personally don’t believe he’s a top CBB SF, hope he is, though last season he showed next to nothing. Aberdeen would have been a tremendously better fit, IMO.Comparing him to the #1 ranked recruit and 4 NBA Hall of famers? Cam's role for Pope last year was to spread the floor. Pretty sure it will be again this coming season, opening up driving lanes for Zoom and Wilkins.
Financially sure, but that's kind of like saying, "If we lose Moreno to the draft, we'll just rock with Potter" (not to that extreme but you get my point.)It does if you understand this:
One budget for Stokes specifically
A much lesser budget without Stokes.
^ This is the reason
That's fair, but Michigan had Dusty May and the number one player in the transfer portal and UConn had Dan Hurley and a loaded roaster (their starting lineup consisted of four All-Big East team and one All-Big East Freshmen team)I’m not sure if UCONN or Michigan had anyone that shot 40% from three.
It’s more like the coaching staff are working on building a full roster that’s ready to go. Think of that roster as a milkshake. They have a fully prepared milkshake. There is possibility of adding a cherry on top. If they can add it, wonderful. If they can’t, they’ll go with the milkshake.Financially sure, but that's kind of like saying, "If we lose Moreno to the draft, we'll just rock with Potter" (not to that extreme but you get my point.)
I don't really understand having a huge priority and then not filling it.
But what if the cherry was the best part? And the milkshake was pretty mediocre without it but amazing with it?It’s more like the coaching staff are working on building a full roster that’s ready to go. Think of that roster as a milkshake. They have a fully prepared milkshake. There is possibility of adding a cherry on top. If they can add it, wonderful. If they can’t, they’ll go with the milkshake.
We all hope we get Stokes. I don’t know if we will.
Hopefully he takes a nice jump next year. He really started playing well before his injury.I think Kam is our Darius Miller, basically. If he’s one of your two best players you probably struggle, but if he’s 4-6 then you have a pretty talented roster.
Top 35 redshirted player from the loaded 2025 class, the best player on our team last year, and a failsafe third stringer. Yeah, sounds terrible. What?! I assume this is sarcasm.
kam/hawthorne/noah would probably rank in the 100-150 range for SF position.
Oweh's contribution from the three? Like, charging into the middle of a collapsed defense and then getting the ball mugged from him?The purpose of this is not just to field a serviceable roster, but instead to get BETTER than we were last year, right?
The Kam/Hawthorne option does seem fine if we’re willing to accept another mediocre 14 loss type season, but it’s certainly NOT an improvement over what Oweh gave us from that 3 spot. It would be a step backward at that position, not forward.
I'm standing my ground. I like Kam and I think Hawthorne will do well if he's put on any weight whatsoever.Neither of those are great options. Kam is at best a 6th man and Hawthorne is a wild card. Stokes would be the only legitimate great choice but I would imagine the 2 you mentioned is who we roll with.
Huh?! It’s now looking like we aren’t gonna get Stokes?! We have better shot now than we’ve had in months. I don’t understand your comment. In the portal, there are only two notable SFs remaining Juke Harris and LeJuan Watts, it’s looking we aren’t going to get Stokes, I really hope MP goes fully in on trying to get Watts, he would compliment KW well. Juke will likely be drafted.
This! My exact thoughts as well. Oh no, the sky is falling.I think Kam is our Darius Miller, basically. If he’s one of your two best players you probably struggle, but if he’s 4-6 then you have a pretty talented roster.
This! Why are people worried about the 3 spot. I don’t get it.We need to make a splash at the 4. Need a solid backup 5. And need more shooting.
How I see it at the moment at least.
Your bar is set quite high there. The consensus best player in HS and a bunch of top 50/100 all time players in the NBA. LmaoI believe KW is extremely overrated, he has zero post game and is not a slasher, he does one thing, shoot. A lot of elite SFs can score from the post, he hasn’t shown that at all. One thing about ol Cowtown. Can go tit for tat with the best of themYour bar is set quite high there. The consensus best player in HS and a bunch of top 50/100 all time players in the NBA. Lmao
Best player on our team last year? Wtf?!Top 35 redshirted player from the loaded 2025 class, the best player on our team last year, and a failsafe third stringer. Yeah, sounds terrible.
lol momcilovic has 0 post game and he’s probably who’d we’d go after if not stokes much more value in a high level shooter especially with the guards we already haveI believe KW is extremely overrated, he has zero post game and is not a slasher, he does one thing, shoot.
