I have to agree that Murphy should be the favorite at the moment....The Bulldogs did lose some talent, but the cupboard is hardly bare as most know, and the Bulldogs do get both Swain and Cherokee at the Hill this year which also gives them the nod IMO...As for the rest of the conference, Cherokee lost some very talented kids on both sides of the ball, but the Braves also return some talent at RB and WR which should help a new signal caller and a rebuilt OL....What also can never be discounted is the fact that a lot of underclassmen got some valuable practice time on the way to the Braves first ever state title which will also be a big benefit this season, and I expect overall numbers to also be up after claiming their first state football title, and we all know that there's never been a shortage of talent on the Reservation through the years, and a state title can lure kids to the field who otherwise might not play the sport of football, so there's that.......You've got to know that Swain Coaches and Players have circled that big game between the Braves and Maroondevils this season on the Reservation since the Braves laid the smackdown on the Maroondevils last year in Bryson City, handing the Maroondevils one of their worst losses in the history of the football program....It's likely the Maroondevil players and coaches have not forgotten that beatdown by the Braves last year in front of the Maroondevil faithful....Robbinsville likely has the premier RB in the SMC this year, but as mentioned above, there are a lot of big shoes to fill on the O and D lines as well as in the backfield....The Black Knights do get both Murphy and Cherokee at Big Oak Stadium this year which should help, but I just don't know if they have the experience to beat either of those teams this year?....Andrews, Hayesville and Rosman should all be much improved over last season.....From the top to the bottom, I expect the SMC to be much more competitive this year than it was last year, but Murphy, Cherokee and Swain County will likely open the season as the top 3 teams in the SMC.....
As for my Rosman Tigers, they should be pretty explosive on offense, but the jury is still out on a Tigers' defense that had trouble stopping anybody last year?....I will be especially interested to see if the Coaching changes that the Tigers made during the offseason will make any difference or not, and it won't take long to find that out as the Tigers travel to face 2A East Henderson and huge 6'6" dual-threat QB Hemphill in the season opener in Flat Rock....
Roar Tigers Roar!
