When did the rules and the NCAA become so soft that they said screw it, not worth enforcing anything?
ie: wearing shorts, no pads, plus all the other BS they now allow.

I think he was played LB in high school also. Also, maybe other brothers that play. I can’t remember where I heard the story, so some details may not be completely accurate.

As far as I know a Qb can wear any number from 0-49 and 80-99. OL are the only players with restricted numbers. No such thing as a LB number as D can wear any number they like.
Actually I don’t think the NCAA rules prohibit a quarterback from wearing any number
0-99.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think offensive players other than lineman who aren't eligible to catch a pass unless identifying themselves as eligible can wear any number except 50-79.

NCAA guidelines for quarterbacks

  • General range: Quarterbacks are typically assigned numbers from 1 to 19.
  • Broader range: They are allowed to wear any number from 1 to 49.
  • Positioning: The numbering system helps officials quickly identify eligible players and enforce rules, as offensive linemen must wear numbers 50-79.
  • Other players: While not officially restricted, quarterbacks often wear numbers in the 1-19 range as a tradition and a point of prestige.

Examples of non-traditional numbers

  • Bear Bachmeier: A quarterback who chose the number 47, which is often associated with fullbacks and linebackers.
  • Richard Lagow: Wore number 21, a number not typically associated with quarterbacks.
  • Doug Flutie: Famous for wearing number 22 as a quarterback.

Key takeaways

  • While there is some flexibility in college football, a QB can't wear any number they want.
  • NCAA rules dictate a certain range of numbers for quarterbacks and other offensive skill players.
  • Using a non-traditional number is possible and may be chosen for personal or symbolic reasons, but it's not the norm.

While I'm still not certain I do think a Qb can wear 80-99 as they are skilled position player numbers.

Interesting that you call someone soft in the same post where you ***** about football fashion.

According to the NCAA Football Rules Book- (Rule 1-4-2): Player Numbers on page FR-24- The only numbers restricted by position are interior offensive linemen, who must wear 50–79 (Rule 1-4-2-c) as you pointed out. Players must wear jersey numbers in the range of 0-99, with no explicit position specific restrictions on quarterbacks, or surprisingly actual anyone else, other than interior offensive linemen.

Agree, especially with the shorts thang. A college ref told me that lack of a knee pad was actually against the rules. Somewhere in the player safety domain. I know I wouldn't even want to play without knee pads.....if you've ever knocked your knee with another player's, or a helmet or shoe going full speed, you know what I mean. The numbers thing is out of control as well. Wish we would go back to traditional numbering for a player's position. Tired of seeing DE's with a #1 or #9, etc. They're not a QB, RB, or WR. Cmon' man!
