So, with WR being wrapped up, where do we stand on DB's in the crootin phase?

Can someone provide a fresh look at potential targets and where you think we stand with each? Visits, star ratings, etc?

How do we look for Conner, Ramsey, Alexander, Shumpert for the secondary? Can we get 2 of these 4 to come to State? If so, this would have to be our best class ever, or one of? Thoughts?

Targets left:
S:
Mackero Alexander(MacKensie's IMO very underrated twin brother - reminds me of Denzel Nkemdiche in highschool) May end up like Wells - sort of expected to be a tweener.

Tony Conner - looks unlikely at this point, but he does still have Kailo and Mix recruiting him to State, and you never know how a Thorpe award can weigh in the minds of a kid like this.

CB:
Jalen Ramsey - wait and see...Tee Martin is trying hard to get back to Tennessee(Ramsey's primary recruiter at USC). IF he gets hired on their new staff, it's an excellent chance he goes to Tennessee IMO. UT fans want him very, very bad. Still think we've got a good shot though.

MacKensie Alexander - wait and see... The fact that we've still got room for his brother(at a position of need) contributes to us having a pretty dang good shot IMO. Think he cancelled his OV this weekend because his highschool team is still winning(and playing on Friday night cuts into OV time). Playing for a state title in Orlando this coming week. IF/When we get these two to campus on an official, which I think we can and will, I'll think we've got a pretty dang good shot.

Shumpert - don't think he will ever play in a secondary. He's either a linebacker or RB IMO... We very much like where we sit with him.

There are more options out there in the JUCO ranks. We'll see how it all comes together, because it's still really early. I expect this to be the last positions we're still recruiting(we're chasing a bunch of "best available" types right now not at positions of need) - because all of the highschool guys we're still after(save Mackero) are NATIONALLY ELITE. We don't want to do anything to spook them prior to them making their decisions - but we are staying tough on some jucos, at least one of which(Carroll Washington) that I think has a chance to be really, really good...

Thanks for that breakdown. I like that there are several big recruits we are still in the mix on. Usually we are hanging our hats on 1 recruit that we are likely not getting, and our backup plan is a far lesser player.

Just to add to this, not sure where we stand with Zadarious Smith, but with Cox and Cory Smith committed, you would think we should get him.

The popular belief on all of the recruiting sites is that we will get Z Smith. It's not a lock, but we are in good shape. It's between MSU and TAMU.

It's also bearing said that we will for sure get either Smith or Sanders.
It's between us and Texas AM for both, but they only have room for one of them. It sounds like we lead for Smith, they lead for Sanders but they'd rather have Smith so they are waiting on him to make a decision.

If Smith picks them, we get Sanders. If we get Smith, they will take Sanders commitment.

Also, don't count out us still taking Blue.

On Za'Darius -- "we feel very good about him."

He's been a guy that has taken a ton of visits and enjoyed the recruiting process after not being recruited much out of highschool. I believe he's much like Chris Jones -- only played 1 or 2 years of highschool football and thus basically missed recruiting. Unofficially visited probably 10 or more schools back during the summer. Also took all 5 officials, the last of which was this weekend to the Longhorns. Keep in mind our policy on visits.

I really don't think A&M has much room for either of them. They are experiencing a major recruiting surge with the Heisman and how the season ended, and factually, they've got 2 total slots left. Ricky Seals-Jones announces on Monday and most feel that will be for A&M. That leaves them with one remaining spot. That is, if they don't start dropping a bunch of guys.

They are still bigtime in the game with the following targets:

Ricky Seals-Jones - probably an Aggie
MacKensie Alexander - they believe they probably lead at this point
Toby Johnson
Isaac Savaiinaea - high 4* linebacker most likely higher on their board than Sanders - them or UCLA
Mike Mitchell - high 4* linebacker also prob higher on the board
Za'Darius
Tony Stevens

You don't "officially" commit to MSU as long as you are officially visiting other places...Za'Darius OV'ed to Texas this weekend, his 5th and last visit.

I'd expect his decision to go public in the next few days most likely...

Is a QB such as Asianii Woullard or maybe Josh Dobbs.

I was strictly talking about the DB position...

Still think we are adding another QB and probably Odogwu on the offensive side...
