Some minor changes this AM, as the Rivals network as a whole as made some upgrades to the site.

You’ll notice it’s all mostly cosmetic changes, with a new look front page, different fonts and new look Rivals logo. Also there’s a color change currently as well, but I believe there was a small mistake there as it was supposed to remain scarlet and not black. I’ll look into fixing that asap.

Curious on your guys thoughts? Also if you experience any issue at all, please email me asap so I can get that fixed for you.

Seems fine except the alerts view’s fonts don’t make it super clear where to tap or click to visit the post about which the alert was generated. Links should stand out more. Might be an IOS/iPad/Safari thing, haven’t seen it in a computer yet.

Yeah, it's the same on a computer, under Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It used to be blue and underlined, now it's just bolded in black. This is a step back.

That was my one minor issue.

It seems to be easily fixable, but who knows what effort goes into it.

They are working on updating the dark modes color scheme now, but in the meantime the Rivals light mode looks to be pretty good for now.

If you don't know how to switch back and forth go to the bottom left of the screen, and click Rivals dark and you can go back and forth.

Yes, but it becomes underlined as one scrolls through the list of alerts, so that's a very, very minor thing to me.

One slightly annoying thing I noticed is that the "new" search function simply goes to the "advanced" search window, no longer offering the search dropdown menu, which allowed one to search in the current thread or forum. Unless I just don't see that option somewhere. I use that search function frequently and it will be missed if it's gone.

I've never understood why anyone would use dark mode over light mode. I thought perhaps dark mode was just a profiling tool to identify baby-eating cannibals.

Well, for one thing it improves battery life.
On a smart phone, yes (although mainly if one uses high brightness - the effect is much less at lower brightness), although I rarely look at this site from a phone, which I typically only use when I'm out of the house (and when I'm out of the house that usually means I'm doing something fun/interesting and not looking at my phone). I do most of my surfing from home on a plugged in laptop, which is way better than a phone for viewing internet sites (size matters, lol).

More than half my viewing of this site is on an iPad pro. So it's phones and tablets. Or laptops that aren't plugged in.

Agree...never used it once but apparently the majority do now

See, that's just a sign of age, lol

I do not use dark mode on my laptop, but the majority of my web browsing is from my phone. I'm a late Gen X, though, and still likely use my laptop much more than younger folks.

As for brightness, lower brightness also preserves battery.. but not nearly as much as dark mode. It's a matter of having the vast majority of your screen illuminated with only the text dark, or only illuminating the small minority of your screen that is the text. The former will always use more battery, even on low brightness.

No, it's a sign of common sense. Anyone who chooses a phone over a laptop for web browsing, when given a choice, i.e., from home, where almost everyone has power and a comfy chair/bed, is just nuts. Why would anyone choose a screen that is roughly 4-6 times smaller than the screen of a decent laptop? I can see so much more and in much better detail on my laptop than my phone, plus it's far easier to navigate tons of multiple windows on a laptop than on a phone. And that's without even considering typing speed, which is far faster on a real keyboard than on a phone, at least for people trained in how to type. Obviously, I get using a phone when out of the house or office, where a laptop isn't realistic to use.

With regard to battery life saved, see the link I posted - at medium brightness, dark mode only saves about ~10% of battery life vs. 40-50% at full brightness.

I agree with Choppin here to a certain extent. Younger folks will choose to do almost everything on their phones if they can - even at work. Take it away or have it die, it's like losing oxygen. To be fair, you can do so much now on the latest generation of phones and the photo/video quality is incredible.

I much prefer the dark mode on my desktop here at the office. Just looks better and is easier on the eyes, even though I have a curved, pretty large Samsung monitor on this PC. Just a matter of preference.

It's been said that there's nothing permanent but change, so I'll get used to it and expect a newer improved version down the road sometime in future.

I kinda like it in all black. Just not the uniforms.
X (formerly Twitter) just went dark mode. It's supposedly better for the eyes, but difficult to get used to. Makes it more difficult to harvest useful conspiracy theories in the dark mode.

It's not a choice of device functionality, but of convenience. I'm mostly not sitting at home in front of my laptop - the vast majority of the day, I'm somewhere else. I also don't use my work laptop for personal website visits - so the whole workday is mobile only. Even if I'm in my own home, I'm usually not in the same room as my laptop (which remains plugged in and connected to a keyboard/monitor/mouse) - it's far quicker/easier to browse/read on my phone.

From a study back in 2020, >60% of US web traffic at that time was from mobile devices, an increase from 2019. My guess is the trend has continued to increase.

When it comes to typing replies, I generally prefer my keyboard (and gasp, two spaces after a period, which makes us both "old", fwiw) - but for shorter replies, I'll often use my phone with either speech to text or swipe. And I'm hardly as mobile-savvy as the three generations younger than me 😁

As far as battery savings, I use dynamic brightness based on ambient light, so I have no idea what brightness my phone is displaying - but even a 10% savings would work out to about an extra 36 min in a day for me (last 3 weeks have ranged from 4-8 hrs/day of screentime, per my phone's digital wellbeing data).

Was the new Rivals logo created by an 8th grade college scholarship contest??

I don’t see any button to hit on the bottom left to go from dark to light mode. Where do I go to find this?
