Wonderful.

Last week - Petersen was a done deal (a big F@CK YOU to every bastard saying, "My source tells me you're going to be very happy!").
This week - We hope we can get Mullen or Wilson to talk to us, but both want to stay on with their teams through F'N JANUARY 8.
Next week - Tommy Bowden announced.

Sarkisian (sp) to the best opening in the country-really? Clemson hired a wr coach. AU is interviewing Turner Gill-they won't have many options open after him. Finally, look at the coaching search OM did in 04. Your search isn't going that bad. </p>

Kelly said no thanks, maybe Patterson said the same. Petersen listened to it due to Byrne. Working for someone you like is a definite plus. But in the end we couldn't do what everyone else has wanted to do. Petersen has shot down Everyone, I think the only thing that was on our side was Oregon getting locked up which was due to us asking about Chip Kelly. If we get Wilson or Mullen I will be very happy with the hire. Dooley or Holtz I am just ok with. If we go down from there I will be vastly disappointed.

I agree - it's not like other schools have the "in demand" coaches knocking down their door either which I find strange. I really thought Washington was going to end of with Petersen b/c it's still in the Northwest and I figured they'd more than double his salary but he didn't even flinch at that job. They're in worse shape as a program than we are, but have much more tradition and it's probably easier to get back to the top half of the Pac-10 than it is for MSU to get in the top half of SEC and then ended up with Sark.

No telling who AU is going to end up with. Little baffling that a lot of mid-major good coaches seem content where they are.

to think that 2 of the best coordinators in the country may be interested in our job is a really good thing.

I can't say it enough, its just not easy to go get someone's head coach.

Bottom line is that MSU is a tough job, it could be rewarding but it is a tough gig, same goes for Ole Miss. Neither are easy jobs. You have a small state with two and half football schools in your state, and two of them happen to be in the SEC. To your west you have the 2007 national champions, to your east you have one of the best 5 coaches in college football, as well as an AU program that is very solid.

On top of that you have rabid fan bases that just fired a coach one year removed from being SEC coach of the year. If you are a successful mid major program I would be looking for an easier gig in the ACC, Big Ten, Big XII North, because the SEC West is ridiculous.

With the amount of money GB is throwing around any OC at any big time school would be an idiot not to take a strong look at MSU, the question would be how many other openings will they have a chance to take?

The question that you have to ask yourself though is whether or not OC at extremely talented schools that have great offenses actually predicts success at a school that will not bring in the type of talent that Florida and Oklahoma brings in every year. Personally, I would want a coach that has proven to do more with less, that can create matchups to his advantage and exploit that matchup. At OK and FL you can exploit every matchup you want because Florida has a track team at RB/WR and a cross between Chuck Norris/Jack Bauer/Chewbacca at QB, and OK has an NFL offensive line with a stud QB, and a RB tandem in Murray/Brown that is ridiculous.

we don't know ****. We could've contracted Pete Carroll, but unless he comes out and confirms or denies there's no way to know. Using Neinas probably makes things easier for Byrne but it makes it frustrating as hell for State fans.

Was anyone else as underwhelmed by the Lane Kiffin hire as I was? If Neinas pushed that to happen, then I've got serious questions. If he's just a facilitator, then fine, but if he actively counseled that hire, I'm not impressed.

i see neinas as more of a facilitator than anything else. like this:

"hey, neinas, we are interested in coaches a, b, c, d, and e. are they interested?"

"i talked to all of them, and only c and e are interested."

"thanks, chuck. we'll go talk to them."

I'm now beginning to wonder if Byrne should have read the tea leaves by looking at the Kiffin hire. I have a hard time believing Kiffin was UTs #1. If UT couldn't pull a strong college HC, then who the F do we think we're going to get?

Mullen is the right guy for us. How good is he or the Florida offense without Tim Tebow? I guess we'll find out next year.

Wilson or Whittingham....now.

He seemed to do okay at Utah and Bowling Green as well
