Their (East Surry) field is a bowl type field with about a 30 to 40-foot bank around 3 sides. A lot of water coming down those banks on their field is probably the reason. We have a tornado watch and severe thunderstorms till 11 pm and has rained for 2 days and not over yet. ES field does not have a huge crown on its field like SS. Its been a while since I've been to SS but their field has probably close to the tallest crown in the conference.

Believe it or not I can remember when South Stokes was in a 4A conference with Reidsville so I do remember their ball field......How is this for a 4A conference in the mid 1980's??:
Reidsville
South Stokes
Eden Morehead
Greensboro Grimsley
Greensboro Dudley
Southeast Guilford.....

Weird Huh?

Granted 4A numbers then were alot less than they are now back then but crazy to think Stokes County had the numbers at the time to have a 4A high school. Of course that was also in the heyday for RJ Reynolds. Be curious to know the ADMs at South before they built West and how much the population has changed in that area over time.

What changed the most is they built 2A West Stoke that took probably most of South Stokes students cutting them and to 1A, and maybe some of North Stokes.

I know last year South Stokes had the smallest class to ever graduate from there the class size was 100 for the class of 2019.

In the mid 80's Reidsville was the smallest 4A school in the state...seems like the numbers was a tad over 1100....ADM numbers are higher now for 4A....last year 2A Reidsville had 708 students........................

West Stokes has ultimately killed South & North. West is the nicer and bigger school that continues to grow, partly because of district lines and because King is quickly becoming a very popular place to live.

I will be surprised if North Stokes is still functioning in 10 years.

This is true, but only partially true. It was definitely true in the early 2000's when West Stokes first opened up. If you look at the ADM's of Stokes County over the past 5 years though the entire county's numbers are declining. West was at 975 in 2014 and 880 in 2018. South was at 633 in 2014 and 500 in 2018. North was at 431 in 2014 and 321 in 2018. Same thing seems to be happening in Surry County and many other rural counties too. A lot of the reason for public school ADM's decreasing are the increased number of kids attending Early Colleges, Homeschool, and Charter schools.

I definitely agree with you regarding North Stokes. My bet would be that they consolidate and redraw lines, having only West Stokes and South Stokes within 10 years.

I can see North Stokes and South Stokes both being closed within 10 years and consolidating into Central Stokes with a new high school built on the campus of the Early College in the Meadows area. You will never convince North supporters to agree to attend South but I can see the idea of a new high school passing. Still will be some upset folks.

Mount Airy and Reidsville were both 3A conference foes for decades...Madison-Mayodan Falcons (great basketball, woeful football) became McMichael in 1989......

They lost it over shutting down an elementary school that had what 50 kids?
