Very interesting. MS didn't do too shabby at #19. Not sure I agree with TN and KY at #8 and 9 and Texas at #2???

Any list without Louisiana topping it is false.

I'll give them credit on California though. There is a lot of different types of food in a state so large. San Diego fish tacos were ridiculous when I was there.

Louisiana?

No way any other state beats them. These guys should have their food critique licenses revoked.

In Mississippi's case, the food is sure to be good when you add any or all of the following ingredients: Sugar, Salt, Alcohol, and Fat. If you can cook a delicious meal without any of those ingredients you've accomplished something.

I wonder if it's the same people that claimed LA and Las Vegas were the 2 best cities to get pizza in the US. How do you completely whiff on that one? Pizza = 1a. NYC 1b. Chicago, no #2.

I can't speak for San Antonio and DFW, but the food scene in Houston and Austin are both legit. so many increidbly good options.

Disagree completely about California- a state with very little true local cuisine. It's all copies of traditional regional fare from other states.
However, fish tacos at South Beach Bar are indeed ridiculous.

If you do that you can probably just rank the states in order of population, with a few states like LA being an outlier.

Kentucky seems to be getting a LOT of mileage from being the home of Bourbon. If it was straight-up food, no way it's even in the top 15.

I can speak for all four, as I have lived in all four cities (technically, five). San Antonio has the best Mexican food you will ever eat. And Dallas, has very good high-end restaurants, and surprisingly good Italian food.

Houston has some very good places (awkwardly enough the food trucks are often the best), and Austin is very eclectic. Tex-Mex, to steaks, to incredible beef barbecue. Great food in all four cities, and many in between.

Let me be more specific. Based on their criteria I can see why California is at the top. You just disagree with their criteria and I don't totally agree with it either. California has some food items that they are known for, has an absolute ton of options, and their local wine scene is unparalleled in the US.

They also said in the first few lines of the article that they wanted to pick a place that they would be willing to only eat there for the rest of their lives (or something to that effect). I don't particularly like their 4 criteria below but I also wouldn't want to only eat Cajun food for the rest of my days either.

"here is what we did: we ranked states by the food/drink available in that state, focusing on four key questions: 1) What did they produce (beef, oranges, ugh, sorghum?), 2) What iconic items were they known for (key lime pie? onion burgers?), 3) What is their beer/wine/spirits production like (great breweries/wineries?), and finally 4) What is the food/drink scene like in their cities? Weighing all those factors, here is our by-no-means-scientific ranking. If you disagree and want to tell us how stupid our faces are, well, that’s what Internet commenting forums are all about"

Dallas has

one of the best (nationally recognized) food trucks in the US, Easy Slider. If you're ever around, you should check them out. It's pretty legit.

That list is crap in my opinion. Alabama is not a great food state, it should be in the middle of the pack. Louisiana should be number one. And New Jersey should definitely be in the top 20. The variety and quality of food in the garden state is insane; easily the best Italian restaurants in the country, good seafood, and at least one of every ethnic food you could think of in every county.

California produces a lot of the best fruit in the country and has a lot of micro climates which are naturally suitable for orchards and vineyards. It is also a big dairy state.

Mississippi can hang its hat on seafood from the gulf, and farm raised catfish, which is unheard of in most of the country. Should be higher than #19. Louisiana definitely #1.

Yeah. But my problem with Louisiana is that after 10 or so top items, you're done. Also, a lot of the restaurants seem to imitate each other there. Not to mention that some of their stuff probably originated in Biloxi (Pressed po boy, for example). I actually think that every place outside of Great Britain can make a strong claim for good food. Order well and eat well, anywhere, even in bad restaurants, usually.

The other thing about Mississippi is the summer garden lunch: peas, cornbread, fried okra, fresh tomatoes, squash ten ways, etc. and etc. Can't be topped. Just can't.

God created beef ... for steaks and a good burgers.

God created pork ... for bar-b-que and bacon.

I understand your loyalty to pork BBQ, but I like them both. Beef BBQ is amazing. Apples and oranges to me, but they're both delicious.
