If you do that you can probably just rank the states in order of population, with a few states like LA being an outlier.
Let me be more specific. Based on their criteria I can see why California is at the top. You just disagree with their criteria and I don't totally agree with it either. California has some food items that they are known for, has an absolute ton of options, and their local wine scene is unparalleled in the US.
They also said in the first few lines of the article that they wanted to pick a place that they would be willing to only eat there for the rest of their lives (or something to that effect). I don't particularly like their 4 criteria below but I also wouldn't want to only eat Cajun food for the rest of my days either.
"here is what we did: we ranked states by the food/drink available in that state, focusing on four key questions: 1) What did they produce (beef, oranges, ugh, sorghum?), 2) What iconic items were they known for (key lime pie? onion burgers?), 3) What is their beer/wine/spirits production like (great breweries/wineries?), and finally 4) What is the food/drink scene like in their cities? Weighing all those factors, here is our by-no-means-scientific ranking. If you disagree and want to tell us how stupid our faces are, well, that’s what Internet commenting forums are all about"
