Definitely stalling. He has to take a shot soon as he gets a warning. Even if it's a half *** shot he has to be offensive. Halfway thru 2 nd period he was already looking at the clock, he's wrestling not to lose.

Wasn’t desanto awarded two stalling points? I thought he got one when Suriano was on top riding. That’s the one, if I am correct that it was called, I’m more interested in.

The first penalty was for hands to the face. Later in the 3rd he got hit with his second stall warning and that was the 2nd penalty point

If memory serves, In their 2 matches DeSanto has only scored 2 offensive points against Suriano (the very late takedown in the first match), all his other points have been on escapes and penalties.
I think Suriano has scored 3 take downs , maybe 4 , in their 2 matches.
He was close to getting back points at the end of yesterday's match.

Stall warning for riding below the waist 3-0
Escape 3-1
Hands to the face 3-2
Stall 3-3

The stall point was frustrating. While the body language was not good, when the other guy is taking shot after shot, I am not sure what you want him to do. He should be able to defend by sprawling in that situation, not have to take a shot into the other guy's shot.

He has to make an offensive move. Either take a shot or instead of just holding on and sprawling has to attempt to score/go behind. The flo announcer was on point said Nicky had his skates on way too soon.

THIS! Ridiculously quick stall call while defending. Watch ANY other match and NO stall call is even called let alone that quick plus late in a match to boot. Well, it’s forcing Nick to be on his game at all times, not only against his opponent but refs, too. For example, saying to ref I can’t return Desanto while he is literally tightly hanging on me so don’t start counting! Nick is on top of his game and it’s working so....

Also, Nick looking at the clock is smart wrestling and awareness.

your are so right.....we get the quick call.....iowa not so much...watched plenty of matches...it all depends on the refs judgement.....just like the holding call in football can be called on every play. so can stalling.... watched a match, forget who ,with a two minute crab ride..i thought you had to go for the fall....see what i mean....the ref in nicky's match had an iowa connection i believe....if you go by the book ,yes that is stalling...it just seems we get the ru screw by the refs more often then not.

No not THIS. Lack of offense is hurting him, hes not wrestling his matches lately, hes backing up, not shooting, holding on. Its def mental he even said he doubting himself, and Goodale said same abt his offense. 1st stall call was quick but when you start getting called the refs start looking for it.
Looking at the clock halfway thru the 2nd period isnt smart its a sign your holding on. How many matches have you heard a coach yell stop looking at the clock. The corner will tell you the time.
Ive watched him wrestle since grade school, at Apex, Buxtons, P Gonzales no one rooting for Nick more than me.
The most important thing is this- He should absolutly take desanto apart. If hes wrestling the way he can he no less than majors desanto.

We are talking past one another. I agree during season. I am talking about the tourney and disagree. Nick is clearly getting back to his offense & more mentally prepared. He isn’t getting derailed by the crazy calls! Those calls were so quick, people could barely figure out what they were for. The commentator could barely finish the sentence and the stall point was already given. They were like WOW! You don’t find that strange? No other match is that called like that. Sorry! We can agree to disagree then. Move on.

Remember, Desanto is constantly moving and that’s hard to counter without taking a second! You know that second they call a stall!

The calls are not crazy, they really arent. He has been wrestling well but looking at the clock is not a sign of smart wrestling.

The nonsense that every call goes against us kinda needs to stop.

When all is said and done I believe he will come out on top in 2 weeks.

I see it as awareness, such as riding time, end of period, etc. No different than looking at coaches when have a sec to do it. It happens all the time. I’ve seen it with other elite wrestlers during our matches.

Matter of fact, when I go to the NCAA review on Thurs., I’ll ask them what they think.

I didn’t say every call goes against us....did I complain about the 2 TD points at the end ref finally gave :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Please dont think I was specifically speaking to you, just in general.

I think every fan base, in any sport, always thinks they get the short end of the stick when it comes to calls.

I agree with this actually. I was surprised at times when RU didn’t get a call against them and vice versus. So, I get it! My frustration with Nick and refs stems from the OK St match with the Iowa principal ref. Since then, it’s been a ref brotherhood of “you want it called sooner to set the tone, we will do that” and they do. It’s insane to a point of being on other end of the spectrum with not a sec to breathe. IMHO, it seems equally unfair as no other match does that. Maybe I am bias, admittedly so. It’s frustrating to watch, interrupts the flow of the match, dramatizes it, and affects the outcome. Maybe that’s what they want, entertainment! That it does! Having said that...most importantly, Nick seems to be managing it much better...brilliantly in fact. He knows what he needs to do to get the calls. For example, he is now forcing refs’ hand to give him the 2 point TD at end by moving asap to show it as opposed to waiting too long for ref to call it with having no time left. Objective and not subjective. Or, if he gets the stall call quickly, OK, then I’m going to counter asap. I won’t let them breathe either. It’s upping Nick’s game and challenging him. He’s becoming an even better wrestler and a more dangerous wrestler on all facets.

That’s how I see it. Still frustrating as a fan to watch it. It’s like, here we go again! Damn it. Trust Nick to be on top of it...get himself out of it or not in it! Ha. Said it, so don’t at me!

Go RU!

It gets annoying when you see The 174 pounder sit on Grello for over 3 minutes and not work 1 single turn. (I think it is hughes). He is one of the biggest stallers on top there is.

DeSanto would be hard to offciate because he is ALWAYS moving forward. Very similar to Marinelli.

On a side note, Alex Marinelli seems like a very good person (even thou he is hard nosed on the mat) after the matches when he wins.

A bit off topic but how often in any sport do you see referees or officials wearing glasses? Can't recall it in basketball. I am sure many wear contacts but the glasses just opens them up for more derogatory comments.

I did ask Goody as stated above. When I straight up asked the question about his position when wrestlers look at the clock during a match, he absolutely agreed with you almost verbatim, RUDiesel. When I responded specifically regarding Suriano’s match, he said he had no problem at all with Suriano or any wrestler doing it while there’s a break in the action and sees it as awareness. His words, not mine. So, there ya have it! Guess it’s a little of both depending on timing & circumstances which makes sense.

Also I think the first penalty point was not for stalling. I thought it for Suriano dropping DeSanto back down. The Ref. said it was an illegal slam or that he brought him down too hard. I may be wrong.

Great human interest story for wrestling fans... Check out what’s going on with Alex off the mat.... it’ll be hard to root for anyone but him at that weight once you see it. Besides ash and Nicky, I’m rooting for him to win most.

That ref was your typical Iowa Homer
I know two of the Iowa refs personally, one much better than the other, at the Big 10's this year. I may have some info. that will surprise you. Which match are you referring to where this "Iowa homer" reffed?

As opposed to NOT wearing their glasses, when they need to wear them?o_O
