Our judicial branch is still functional. That's refreshing whether you love or hate the tariff idea....![]()

Or maybe one where the executive branch just executed the laws that are on the books and didn‘t try to make up new ones.Interesting. I would argue our judicial branch has possibly overstepped its purview, not in this particular instance, but in others. Imagine a world where judges just applied the law and legislators made the law. Seems like they each would rather do the other's job sometimes.
Too bad that if the money is refunded it won't go to the people who actually spent the money on them .....US .Refund the money And forget the damn things.
Yep. That’s why it was blatantly illegal all along. Only Congress has the power to tax.Too bad that if the money is refunded it won't go to the people who actually spent the money on them .....US .
No no no. The supreme court is compromised and we live in a dictatorship. This will get locked quickly, but the fact that checks and balances still exist and most importantly the Supreme Court remains its own entity separate from the executive branch makes me happy. I’m not saying the tariffs are good are bad, I just didn’t like how much power one man in the government appeared to have. For those of us that believe in small central government and love the idea behind how the American government is supposed to work, this is a good thing.
Trust me. There are “sections.”There are three other sections in the constitution that will allow the tariffs to go forth. That's why Trump wasn't worried.

This isnt the first admin to issue tariffs.Yep. That’s why it was blatantly illegal all along. Only Congress has the power to tax.
To be fair, we've allowed Executive Branch overstep for decades by allowing our congressmen to not do their job based on wanting them to have tenure so they could funnel money back to us and based on party loyalty/warfare. Trump has just ratcheted up the crazy to a level that makes you realize why too much executive power is a really bad thing. I'm not optimistic that we will learn anything. I expect the pendulum just to swing back way too far left as it normally does.Or maybe one where the executive branch just executed the laws that are on the books and didn‘t try to make up new ones.
Without Congress acting on this scale? These were FAR beyond anything that had been done before. This isnt the first admin to issue tariffs.
AgreeTo be

Or how about the executive branch overstepping? That’s been going on for 30 plus years.Interesting. I would argue our judicial branch has possibly overstepped its purview, not in this particular instance, but in others. Imagine a world where judges just applied the law and legislators made the law. The ongoing problem is how cozy the legislative branch usually is with the executive. When both are under control of the same party, there is no separation. The legislature becomes a bill factory for the executive to sign. This will get locked quickly, but the fact that checks and balances still exist and most importantly the Supreme Court remains its own entity separate from the executive branch makes me happy. Executive branch overstepping and legislative branch understepping.Or how about the executive branch overstepping? That’s been going on for 30 plus years.
This. 100% this. You can’t make the president all powerful just because you like his endgame. It is amazing to me that there are Republicans who think the President being able to unilaterly impose tariffs is a good thing. The ball keeps on bouncing and the pendelum is always swingning. It's not going to happen in the immediate future, but at some point a left-wing version of Trump is going to come along. Imagine someone like Bernie Sanders or some other Progressive lunatic having that kind of power.
Ole Abraham Lincoln might say 165 yearsOr how about the executive branch overstepping? That’s been going on for 30 plus years.
This is not a political statement because both parties do it. But Executive Branch has assumed a lot more power than the constitution allows & legislative branch just lets it happen. This goes all the way back to Thomas Jefferson & the Louisiana purchase (which was actually good that he did that, he had real reservations). But it’s been abused for several decades now. (And now I read the rest of the thread & realize I’m just repeating what several others have already said.)This will get locked quickly, but the fact that checks and balances still exist and most importantly the Supreme Court remains its own entity separate from the executive branch makes me happy. I’m not saying the tariffs are good are bad, I just didn’t like how much power one man in the government appeared to have. stating the obvious***all branches of the government have pure motives and trustworthy people in place, 100%

If we are being honest the GOP has been infiltrated by MAGA. One man's brand. MAGA doesn't stand on traditional GOP values, nor promote the GOP in any way. They simply use the power that controlling one of two parties affords. They don't even pretend any more to hold traditional conservative values. I would argue that Republicans are not in favor, but the Republican party doesn't currently contain enough Republicans to matter...It is amazing to me that there are Republicans who think the President being able to unilaterly impose tariffs is a good thing. The idea of thoughtfully considering the landscape and implementing economic reforms that give us the best shot at prospering in a global economy is not bad. If out of that consideration, by experts in the field pointed to a reasonable course to chart, then that would be OK. Randomly implementing various percentages of tariffs executively based on who you like the least or who disagreed with you, then changing on a dime and revoking them, sometimes within 24 to 48 hours is not policy. It's unfortunate the our country has real needs and does not elect adults.I will leave the what’s legal arguments to others, but from someone that worked in American manufacturing for almost 45 years, some sort of tariffs or road blocks are desperately needed to help American manufacturing survive and hopefully prosper. I could write a book about Companies in China and other places coping our designs and stealing our customers with much cheaper products and prices. We had cases in 2 different companies I worked for where the Chinese Companies actually used our Company name and part numbers on their products. Today’s decision will significantly hurt opportunities for local companies to compete and hire additional employees. Long term, the situation we find ourselves in today is bad for manufacturing and bad for the Country.

I dont think tariffs are the answer for the problems you are describing. US and international trade and IP laws address that type of copying.I will leave the what’s legal arguments to others, but from someone that worked in American manufacturing for almost 45 years, some sort of tariffs or road blocks are desperately needed to help American manufacturing survive and hopefully prosper. The damage has been done already. No no no. The supreme court is compromised and we live in a dictatorship.
Nazi Germany all over again!!!
Payback is motherphucker. It is amazing to me that there are Republicans who think the President being able to unilaterly impose tariffs is a good thing. My perspective is we get ripped off when foreign countries steal our IP, and we should have some pretty serious diplomatic measures for such things where the measure itself can reasonably be assured to deter future such activity (perhaps not possible?).Trump has talked about the US being ripped off by other countries for decades. We have been on the underside of every trade deal going all the way back to the early 90's. Why should the US fund the world? It has contributed to the massive national debt....that, and being sneaky corrupt with our tax dollars.
