What an odd, odd story. If it's proven that Notre Dame fabricated this mess... there should be some major repercussions. This is just absurd.
Wow. You'd think that a site (even if it is Deadspin) would make damn sure this was legit before they ran with it, because you KNOW some Domer lawyers would sue them into last week if it was false (and still might).

That's a really strange story. I'd never heard the "uplifting" stories about the guy, but he either was in on it or is a very vulnerable human being. Some of the goings on seem to constitute fraud to me. And it sounds like a lot of newspaper reporters didn't do their research.

I do too. But I don't believe the school itself was involved (presumably to promote him for the Heisman) like someone else apparently thinks is possible. Like them or not, I think the school is very reputable.
But at least they raised some money for cancer research.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I'm guessing he probably "met" this girl on the Internet, and he made up a story about how they met.
I've heard stories of people meeting individuals on the Internet who are not who they say they are and the victims do stuff for them like give them large amounts of money, and I've even heard of people getting fired for embezzeling money from their company and things like that.
Yes, it's their fault, but it's also still sad that people get taken advantage of like that.
