That punch by DK Metcalf is going to be disastrous.

I wonder if that is standard language in Steelers' contracts, or if there was some reason they thought Metcalf might be a disciplinary problem?

Void the salary? Does that mean it gives Pitt the right to release him now and not pay anything else? Or he essentially has to play for free?

I don’t think the NFLPA would ever let the latter stand. He may lose the guaranteed money but no way is he going to essentially be enslaved as free labor for the Steelers.

Say all that to say….maybe poor wording in the tweet by Rapaport. The actual scenario is he misses pay for “the rest of the season” because there are only 2 games left in the regular season and that is the length of suspension, but he’ll still get paid for the playoffs (Pitt is still leading the division).

He’d also need to get released to not get the guaranteed money in 2026, which doesn’t seem particularly likely. He was / is still a highly productive player and was a big reason they are back in the postseason picture. No reason to let him go for nothing.

I guess he has to be eligible to play for a certain number of games (excluding injuries) before future season guarantees can kick in. That's a smart clause for the org for sure.

I did see some commentary on the twitter (grain of salt) that the guy he punched may have a history of harassing him. If so, I hope that's been vetted before that punishment is set in stone. He's got to be punished somehow but I'd hate to see so much given up if he lost his cool at a real jackass.

or, hear me out, DK doesn’t walk over to the stands and engage with the known a-hole. That might help prevent $45million mistakes.

I mean there are two douche bags in this ordeal. DK and the fan, but if he has a history with the fan it makes DK even dumber. Just walk away as soon as you see the fan.

That fan may come out $45 million better from this interaction than DK does.
He ain’t gonna get that much but he’s gonna get an easy pay day and it won’t be insignificant. But I hate that. Not for DK but it’s BS you can start $h1t and then sue for it.

In a just world, the fan would get nothing and DK would have to donate $2 million to MSU NIL.

Exactly. If the ownership says "nevermind, that fan is a doosh", then they deserve what they get. The language in the contract is black and white.

In life you have to be acutely aware of whether you or the other person has the most to lose in a given situation. If you don't have that level of awareness very little can compensate for the outcome that will inevitably cost you.

Unfortunately for the fan, I don’t think anything that happened to him could be considered any sort of trauma or major injury that would get some huge payout. Much better odds that he’s banned for life from Ford Field as well as perhaps multiple other NFL stadiums.

He was verbally harrassing a player and hanging out over a barrier onto the field to do so, and continued doing so even as he approached by said player who had no chance of causing him any harm if he had just stayed in his seat. He gets his shirt grabbed and that’s pretty much it. Not really anything there at all as far as “pain and suffering”.

That's pretty severe, even for an OM ex-player. I doubt all that will happen, but a single fine along with the suspension likely will.

So players can't go into the stands - the Packers have done it for years, and other teams are doing it too. I suppose there's no ill-intent, but still it's "going into the stands".

The "fan" probably won't get field level tickets any longer, even if gets tickets at all.

I wouldn’t blame the ownership if they went light on him. He makes them money.

wouldn’t blame them if they hammered him either.

He’ll get 6 figures just to keep it out of court.

Again, I think it’s misleading information to stir the pot.

The $20 million injury guarantee for 2027 only applies if he’s injured when Pitt releases him. It really isn’t “guaranteed money” like the $25 million in 2026 is, anyway.

For the $25 million in 2026 to go away, he’d have to be released by the Steelers prior to, I believe, late March. He’s the best WR on a playoff team, so you know he isn’t getting released before mid-late January at the earliest.

Just seems like a situation where what is technically possible still really isn’t necessarily what is beneficial for anyone on either side of the contract.

I read that as he does not get his salary for the remainder of the regular season since he’s suspended. Not sure how playoffs are accounted for.

If that gives them the option to cut him at any point from here on out and not have any guaranteed money, that seems like a hell of a gift for the Steelers. May not be worth anything if he continues to produce, but if he falls off, that’d be a nice option to have. Surely they have to actually exercise the right to cut him while he’s suspended? Just seems weird to put him on contract with no guaranteed money as a penalty.

Y’all go ahead and cancel whatever gifts you were inevitably gonna send me.****

Best Christmas gift ever. POS guy facing POS consequences.
Dang. And I’d gotten you something really good too. Guess I’ll return it. **

seriously, that POS deserves to lose it all. Not so much just from that punch, just generally because he’s a UMiss POS. And the punch.

Story I saw was Steelers could keep him at his contracted salaries as long as they want to then release him at no cost. With his declining production, I’d expect them to just release him.

What declining production?

He’s more or less the same player as he has been for the past several years. Pittsburgh has no incentive at all to release him before 2026 season. If they did, they never would have guaranteed the money in the first place.

If DK tears an ACL or achilles in the playoffs, he’s in trouble. But otherwise, it’s a non-issue.

He’s below his career averages for receptions for 3 years, yards for 2, and touchdowns for 2.
