I'm not convinced that is as much a factor as everyone else. That number doesn't come down significantly for 3 more years. If you are looking at it from a cost saving stand point you have to wait to 2018 to make a move. You will lose so much money in lost ticket sales and K Fund donations waiting for that number to come down that it might end up cheaper doing it now.
I'm sure UK will crunch the numbers. But if ticket sales do drop over several years they seldom rebound to high level in the first year of a new staff unless maybe it is a true home run hire. I misspoke about the ~$18M (that included this year's salary which is a done deal). If terminated immediately after...
2015 season (i.e., before 12/1/17), 100% of remaining compensation is $15.5M
2016 season (i.e., before 12/1/17), 100% of remaining compensation is $12.0M
2017 season (i.e., before 12/1/17), 80% of remaining compensation is $6.6M (EDIT)
Termination is certainly not going to happen this year because it is too expensive AND there are too many "higher tier" jobs than UK now open. IOW, virtually impossible to land a home run hire this year. After 2016 it is still a $12M giveaway and the UKAA will likely be underwriting debt service on the pledged academic infrastructure as well as CWS (i.e., ~$180M total). I simply would not expect a buy out until after the 2017 season. Barnhart
really screwed up with that contract extension last year.
