Last year he said he couldn't coach up the young DB's because he had to pour into the starters. Then after getting promoted he goes on about how his strength is outsmarting other coaches. Glad he's gone.
He is in fact a very bright guy. That said, calling offensive and defensive plays is a rare talent. I heard a former successful NFL coach get asked why so many retreads get hired as coordinators in the NFL. His answer was just that. Very few guys have that rare talent. I don’t think Butler has that kind of talent. He might be a great teacher.

I wouldn't mind seeing Holgorsen go. That would have sounded ridiculous last year, but he has been a disappointment this year.
The O line and Dylan’s injuries have been killers this year. Gottula was never healthy before he went down for good. Dana has frustrated me at times with his play calling but that’s likely going to be the case no matter who our OC is. Stuff isn’t always going to work.

Wonder if there's going to be any decommits on defense that liked Butler?

Perhaps MR wasn't enthused with those committed kids and doesn't care if they leave.
Odem is highly rated.

Offense national rank - 79th.
Defense national rank - 23rd.

The star players are all on the offense - Raiola and Johnson (arguably the most talented in each position in a decade). Star players on the defense? Both lines were weak.

Was the wrong coordinator fired?
The only reason to fire a DC after one season is a switch in scheme the DC won't know.

When a team loses its starting RT and QB all bets are off. Being forced to have a true freshman QB make his first starts with your 4th best OT on his right side isn’t a recipe for success.

I find this very hard to believe. He has an ego & FU money. He's not going to be forced to do anything.
Matt literally begged Dana to come here about 10 games into last season, if Dana didn't tell him what his requirements were for the job, that's on Dana and I think he can speak his mind when he's doing someone a professional favor.

I hope we hire a DC who is ACTIVE right now and will bring some dudes with him. Not some guy who has been out of the loop.
This my new standard as well. Get somebody that is actually doing that job, this season. And with a track record of at least some moderate success. Preferably with the P4. Try stealing somebody else’s DC for a change. Don’t promote a position coach from here or anywhere.

They were certainly better. They only really started getting bad when we had to put everyone on the line to try and stop opponents run game. IMO.
I'm not confident enough to say certainly better. I don't really have a stance on it, so I could definitely be convinced.

I felt like they were sticking closer to WRs this year for sure. at least two games were lost in 2024 (notably Illinois and UCLA) because WRs were just running completely free on 3rd and long.
I feel like the DB room was very hot and cold this year, a lot of up and down. Both years we consistently had bad angles, missed tackles, and the secondary forced less turnovers this year. They definitely weren't the worst part of our defense though.

His first stint at LSU was good. His 2nd stint there was atrocious and he got fired after one year, it was so bad that he hasn't gotten hired to coach football anywhere in the 5 years since then.
Is NU still paying him?

I'm probably the last guy in on this thought, but I have a feeling we'll be starting Gramstad at QB for the bowl.
I think there's a 51% chance of you being right. DR shelved by an injury, and what if TJ has a lingering type hamstring issue?

Can you say HH?

I think Butler is kind of a scapegoat, I'm getting some vibes of Riley firing Banker. Did great with the secondary but he inherited a really small d-line, not sure anyone could have done much better. This is more on Rhule for letting his roster management get that bad and also on the S&C/Nutrition people for players that didn't look/play the part. Linebacker coaches, DL coaches, OL coaches need to be reevaluated.

I guess my gut feeling is that TJ will hit the road. Hopefully he plays the bowl game either way. I have nothing to base this off of, I just think Rhule is going to sell his soul (again) to keep DR and TJ will be looking for a starting gig.

got fired, that is

This is the right decision. I don't think he is a bad coach, just a bad fit for college football and in particular the Big 10. We couldn't stop the run at all using his system. I agree we need a big hire here to instill confidence in our defensive recruits.

Maybe, but can't see him getting a starting job somewhere worth it, unless he wants to go smaller.

Right now my guy says DR is looking for a starting spot somewhere else, I think that was his plan all along. Maybe I'm wrong.

If DR does leave, find some experience in the portal. Better spend some money in the trenches either way
