I think this episode was weak. Holes everywhere.

There are no holes if the reveals in 8 and 9 make sense.

1. Say she's Luke's daughter, then she didnt tell anyone who she was and that she knew about the force because she knew it was important to keep it secret. And when she was young she would of seen how to do the tricks but didnt practice it because she was staying incognito. I thought the movie did a good job leading you to this thought process but some people might need to watch it a bunch more to catch on.

2. Anakin, Luke and now Rey all have the same force ability to know machines .. explains why she was able to know what to do with the Falcon.

3. Luke learned a lot form Obi Wan after he passed away, so at no point people think, maybe Rey was learning from someone talking to her and J.J. didnt want to reveal it in this episode yet? It leaves a mystery thats good for episode 8.

4. You say they addressed too much but then complain about holes....... hmmmmmmm I think you were determined to be upset at this movie no matter what

They addressed to many story lines and left big holes in all of them. I understand things will be clarified in 8 and 9 but this isn't a Star Wars fan first rodeo. Rey doesn't know who she is. She doesn't even know her connection to the force. It took Luke learning from two live Jedi masters before he could do the things she could without any intervention. No to mention she could have easily killed Ren again with no training. That's a giant hole that I cannot see being filled. usually when a writer director goes for too much content they miss a lot. I liked it as much as I liked the prequels.

So what would you of done... made a 20 hour movie to fill in all the holes that 33 years makes?

imagine what people walking out of theatre in '77 thought? lots of questions i assume? the force? vader with only 12 minutes of screen time? jedi? and so on. and these things were answered in the following movies. you will have to take the trilogy as one big story. not expect every answer to every question laid out in this film. this was the one to kick things back into gear.

Movie was awesome all complaints are just short sighted at this point. I basically left the theatre, grabbed a pizza, and have 4-5-6 ready for a long night!

If I had any questions that need fill in it is just simply going back to remember the older stuff and how it relates. Everything else I assume will be explained.

Anyone who watched Rey destroy 2 guys trying to take the droid but then questioning her abilities is funny. In the field training most likely but not knowing she had Jedi in her blood. Also Ren even said she was just figuring out the force, so when the light saber went to her it was clear she was of Darth Vader/Luke blood.

I'm going back and watching the old ones, but I kept seeing the illusioned first order leader as Darth Vader w/o a mask.

This was a mashup of episodes 3 and 4. Ren will become a human cyborg after what Rey did to him. "Rey I am your cousin. What? Yep no doubt Rey is Luke's child. She brings r2 back to life after cp3o tells Finn that he will only come back when Luke returns and during the lightsabre battle with Ren the light saber goes to her instead of ten. I think this episode was weak. Holes everywhere. Rey didn't require any training she just knew what to do including knowing more about the millenium falcon than Han...and she had never been on the ship! They address way too much in one movie imo. Would have been cool to see Ren during his training with Luke and the break away. BTW leia and Han son is Ben
Lol. Nope.

It really does feel like a mixture of parts of 3-6. Starts off with droid having secret info for the rebellion. It escapes the bad guys (empire/first order) while hiding on a desert planet. It ends up with a soon to be Jedi after being saved from a salvager. Jedi to be and droid meet up with bad guy turned good (smuggler/storm trooper). They escape from bad guys that are after droid by using the Millennium Falcon. They are helped by older guys with ties to the force (Han [wife and son]/Obi Wan Kenobi). They find out there is a planet destroying machine that will destroy the rebel base if they don't take down the shields and destroy it. Have help from tall hairy creature to take down shield. The Jedi meets up with an evil tall man in black wearing a mask who is related to them (father/uncle). Man in black struggles with inner conflicts between the light and dark sides of the force before finally giving in to the dark side. Man in black answers to mysterious creature through holographic projections. Man in black kills older guy helping Jedi. X Wing fighters fly through a trench of planet destroying machine and find an exposed area (exhaust port/hole from explosions) where they are able to destroy machine . Injured man in black escapes. Could he get robotic parts to repair his body? Jedi leaves to find older Jedi (Yoda/Luke) who will explain things and further train them. Jedi meets up with former Jedi (Darth Vader/Luke) who they will find out is their father.

That is what I could think of off the top of my head. There could be more similarities. I could definitely see diehard fans being disappointed and thinking it is pretty much a reboot, but like I said in my other reply I still really enjoyed it. I am just a fan of sci-fi movies and not a diehard that dresses up to go to the movies.

Overall I thought it was good. But agree with person who thought it moved a little too fast.

A few complaints:

Leia: Didn't think the acting was very good.

Rey: How did she develop Jedi powers with zero training? More powerful than the bad guy. Even Luke needed Kenobi to get started.

Didn't seem as dramatic as it could have been. Bunch of planets destroyed. Han Solo dies. Could have played those up more I thought.

Overall happy with movie though.

I enjoyed the Han Solo stuff, but most of his storyline felt like a forced Indiana Jones 4. He's just old. So probably best to kill him off.

I hated the Leia storyline, but I never was a Carrie Fisher fan. Her voice in this was nauseating. Lots of drugs/alcohol/bad choices over the years. Felt like they should've improved the banter between her and Han a bit. Just felt a bit forced.

So Rey is Luke's kid, right? She's more powerful than Ren/Ben. Going to see it again Sunday, and will pay close attention to the flashback scene with the lightsaber.

Needed more Poe. Great character...not enough screen time.

Didn't like the Nazi feel of the First Order. Weirded me out tbh.

The destruction of the planet felt a bit rushed.

I'd give it an A-. Very very very very good. Will watch multiple times. Not great.

Episode 8 has the potential to be great if they do the storyline right.

Movie was great. Some of you are thinking wayyyy too much. Lots of storylines. They will get answered in the coming parts just like the other ones did. Watching it in 3D was awesome. That said, I have an even greater appreciation for Lucas and how he was able to make the first 3 during a time where technology was nowhere near it is today and was able to achieve the special effects he did back then.

I really enjoyed the movie. I think the complaints about Rey's use of the force are unfounded. The prequel trilogies basically turned the force into a super power on the level of possessing a Green Lantern ring. As much as people dislike those movies, they're still cannon. So in terms of Rey moving the lightsaber or using mind tricks, yeah that's more than Luke could do with no training, but it pales in comparison to throwing several ton objects, force jumping, blocking multiple blaster shots with a lightsaber, and all the other super human feats of force that were present in the prequel trilogy.

And FWIW, I think we may ultimately find out that Rey had been trained to some extent, but either the trauma of her childhood caused her to repress those memories on her own or someone else even more powerful than her repressed those memories and abilities for her as a means to protect her.

Here are some thoughts about Rey and her powers

Rey won't be as powerful as Kylo Ren . Its just Rey was more emotional after Fin was struck down. As we have learned through all the movies, being emotional tends to give more temporary power and also don't forget Ren was also hurt from the Bow Caster and a tad bit from Fin

I get why some are upset at her learning the force what seemed to be so quick........... IF its not decently explained in 8 or 9 . But I don't like how some are completely bashing this movie just because they refuse to wait for explanations in later movies

The movie was fast paced and it worked but I really wish they slowed a few things down and let us drink in some of the x-wing fights and stuff..... make the movie 2 hours and 20 minutes to give us that extra 10 minutes.

.

If in 8 she tells some one that she felt like she was being guided by some one... a voice like say Obi or Yoda.... Would that be acceptable to you? J.J. loves keeping mysteries so I can definitely see that being his intention but not letting the audience hear the voice in episode 7 just so its a reveal in episode 8.

The voice calling 'Rey' at the end of her vision certainly sounds like Obi-Wan done by an Alec Guinness impersonator.

Yeah, I'd be happy with that.

It had an opening day of $120.5M (this includes preview night) beating the last Harry Potter's record of $91M. It could make $0 the rest of the weekend and still be the 20th highest opening weekend of all time.

I know this is Star Wars and you have to be open to giving some leeway to the science of things, but the concept of the Star Killer base was just silly. So it basically soaks up it's sun's energy to blast other planets? So won't everyone on that base instantly freeze to death when the star is no more? Otherwise I love where the storyline is going. I like that it sort of pays homage to the original trilogy. Now lets move on and get into some new stuff.

Great movie but the longevity of its greatness in the saga will depend on the direction taken in the next two episodes. As it stands now, the movie was a really good remake of episode 4...I was a bit surprised that the approach was not to tell a new story, but to largely rehash what has already taken place with new characters. I expect more originality in the next two films...

With that being said, Kylo Ren is the scariest and most unstable of all the Star Wars villains thus far...

Ummm other than a death star, what did they do that has already taken place? The only two things that were similar is beginning with a Force kid on a desert planet and blowing up a death star at the end.

I must say, it's hard ready your posts as you miss a lot. It's the same film.

A desert planet where a droid has secret plans to be found by a young person strong in the force but has no idea, walks into a cantina, boards the millineum falcon. There is a villain with the dark side and black mask hunting down the young force user, all while answering to a menacing hologram, that appears to be a supreme leader. The rebellion is fighting the empire or first order. The empire blows up aldaraan, ugh I mean some other planet.
There is a whole fight scene with the father son role, they attack the death star through a vent shaft, the fighters barely make it.

That's just surface.

I still liked it though. Out if all the alternatives, probably Abrahms best shot at a home run and he hit it.

Ok so out of all of that.... The desert planet, Droid, Helmet, and death star count

Sith wear black. Its a dark side thing, not a new hope thing.

Walking into a bar has happened in other movies, not just A new hope.. its a star wars thing not an individual movie

They communicate through holograms, its a star wars thing, not a new hope thing ... And i thought the emperor didnt even show up until empire anyways.

Rebels fighting the empire..... its a original trilogy thing... not just a new hope thing.

If you want to say this movie took a lot from the original trilogy and used it for familiarity , thats fair, but it wasn't just a remake of one movie.
