I haven't used any of my pedals in a while. I have a Boss Overdrive, Distortion and a Looper Pedal. I have a Donner Mini Digital Delay and Kokko Compressor. I'm not really a gear guy. I just like to plug in and jam.

The DM2 waza is a great pedal. I'd put it last in the chain before your amp (after the Flint). Start with a low setting on the repeat rate knob (all the way left, then up just a little) - same on the intensity knob. The echo knob controls the volume of the delay repeats. For musical sounds you probably want it lower volume than the initial note. Adjust this by ear until it sounds good to you. That should get you started.

@rudd1 I just saw a YouTube video on the DM2. Apparently the repeat rate is wired backwards compared to most delays. So my instructions above should say turn it all the way RIGHT, then back a little. The intensity would still be all the way left.

Also, it has a dry output so you could use it to do a wet/dry setup with two amps.

I didn't really know much about the 432 Hz tuning until I heard Church of the Cosmic Skull's music. I don't know if it's the 'Heartbeat of the Earth' or not as some say and who knows about the supposed healing properties of that frequency. The video is more about The Golden Ratio anyway than it is about 432 Hz. I found the video interesting and thought I would share it.

I have a cousin that has an RS that he bought brand new quite some time ago and he loves it. I picked on it a few times and it was very nice. If I do ever get to purchase new guitar, a telecaster is certainly a guitar I wouldn't mind owning and I do like the humbucker at the neck as well.

Do any of you have an SG? That's another guitar on my list that I would like to own. What about a 335? I know the 335's can be expensive but they sound great.

Haha... I have two builds going right now... Shell Pink and Inca Silver w/ a neck mini humbucker.

The Inca Silver is built from all used parts, I have less than $500 in it... all high quality parts (Warmoth, Fender, Manlius pups, etc... but used and thus cheaper}.

Having said all that, my paint work is still not perfect... nitro takes patience and that's a weakness of mine. You actually do more sanding than you do painting.

A silver lining due to Covid is I now have plenty of time lol.

I highly encourage anyone with some time, to buy parts to build a partscaster Tele. You will be SHOCKED at the high quality (assuming you use quality parts), and you don't have to spend thousands to get a Custom Shop comparable axe. Fender makes some GREAT guitars... but I'll never buy another bolt on neck guitar ever again.

I have a custom made SG and a Gibson '59 Historic 335. Both have big fat necks and get gigged all the time.

The 335 is exactly like this: https://reverb.com/item/34841317-gi...MI-tDlz4vw6gIViLzACh37QA3jEAQYAyABEgJ9P_D_BwE

The SG can be seen here (it was built by Chris at Retroguitars in Columbus... https://www.retroguitars.net/guitars):

Edit: Not sure if you guys can see the picture but if you go to the website my SG in the silver metalflake listed in the finished guitars section.

A partscaster is just a kit you buy? That is intriguing and something that would be a fun winter project.
You CAN buy kits... but my experience is that you don't get high quality parts... unless you pay up for a high quality kit... which then defeats the purpose.

If you want a kit, these guys are among the best: https://precisionguitarkits.com/

$500 in used parts (body, neck, electronics, pups, etc) will get you a damn good guitar that you'll never need to upgrade. You WILL, however, need to learn/know the basics regarding paint, soldering/electronics, setup, etc... but IMHO its not nearly as difficult as it might seem. YMMV.

This site and specific page has more used stuff than you can imagine: https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?forums/music-gear-parts-and-accessories-emporium.59/

That sounds great and fun as well and not expensive which is nice (in my Carl Spackler voice). I'm no master craftsman but I can solder, paint and I can follow directions. Especially if I can watch someone doing the work on Youtube or whatever. I'm a monkey see, monkey do kind of learner. I need something to do this winter so I don't go all Jack Torrance if sports gets canceled.

Where do you get your paint? I have a strat I'm thinking of refinishing. I'm aware of the Guitar Re-ranch stuff but was wondering if there was somewhere else.

I use Reranch and am happy with them.

If you dont want nitro there are lots of options, including the local Home Depot/Lowes.

You can also get nitro from Ohio Valley Nitro; the reviews I have read were positive. However, they don't have all the Fender custom colors (shell pink, inca silver, for example).

What are yalls favorite open tunings for slide? And what material do you prefer your slide to be for acoustic v electric?

I play bass but have fooled with guitar long enough to be competent and capable. Ive decided if I actually want to get proficient enough to have an area of guitar expertise, slide is it. A little stanky and a little funky.

They are probably the best. I had a RMC5 Wizard Wah for 15 plus years. Great sounding pedal. But you can get a used Vox or standard crybaby for $50 and there's nothing wrong with that.

Currently I use an expression pedal plugged into a Keeley Monterey. It lets me get wah + Leslie + Univibe + Fuzz + Octave with minimal pedalboard real estate.

As a cover band guitarist, I had to learn the slide stuff for popular slide songs: One Way Out, Statesboro Blues, Rocky Mtn Way, etc. I have always played them in standard tuning out of necessity: can't switch gits to an open tuned git when the dance floor is packed lol... but playing slide in standard is a compromise IMHO.

Having said that, I think Duane preferred open E IIRC... Muddy and most Stones tunes were open G... those two tunings are probably most popular.

Spend a little time deciding what finger to use for slide; pinky allows for a little more "back and forth" between traditional playing and slide... but you lose the ability to play shuffles properly.

I use 3rd finger but YMMV... and definitely buy both glass and brass slides... they do sound significantly different.

Restringing one of my guitars and I'm curious how often you other folks restring yours. What strings do you use? I like the Elixir Polyweb or Nanoweb 9's for the Les Paul and 10's for the Strat. And Big Bends Nut Sauce for the win.

I used to work in a pawn shop and a guy brought in one of these one day and wanted to borrow 25 bucks. I said "No problem". He didn't pick it up, so it went home with me. Got in a hurt for money and ended up selling it for quite a large profit. Wish I would've kept it.

For me it really varies depending on the guitar and how much it has been played. When they start sounding really dead to me or out of tune at certain frets I will change them out.

Not a fan of Elixers in general. They sound good when new but for me the unwound strings lose the coating faster then you get the wound strings still sounding fresh so it's not balanced to my ears.

I actually do the opposite on my Les Paul. With the shorter scale length it gets 11s while my Strat and Tele get 10s or 9s.

+1 on the nut sauce.

I like the feel of the Elixirs. Other than that I'm not picky. I like heavier gauge strings on the Strat because it's sound is a bit thinner than the Les Paul's and thought they might give it a bit more meat. Either way I don't care for anything heavier than 10 gauge. Hell, SRV was playing 13's (ouch) all the time and would go even heavier some times. I bet he could've cracked walnuts between his thumb and fingers. I had never even considered the scale length when I was choosing string gauge. Makes sense though.

Where is @CastleRubric? I'm pretty sure that dude likes to play.

I stumbled across an older business card from a place in Lexington called the Tone Shop owned by some guy named Robert Burris. He put some tubes in a Fender Blues Junior I had long ago (and now wish I hadn't sold) I don't know if the guy still works on amps or not but I know Rudd was looking for someone. The number is 859-335-1034 and it's appointment only, according to the card.

Awwwww SWEET!!

love been neglecting my guitars for the past two weeks as my time and attention (and my irrational desire to use sleep as a narcotic) has become painfully scattered across a myriad of circumstantial matters that would be best summarized in a corny *** country song ...like the greasy hat Milwaukee’s best drinking Jerry Reid goofball **** that filled the B-side of a movie soundtrack like “cannonball 3” ...

Among other things my lovely bride believes it’s time I formally evaluate/ treat and psychotropic drug my brain into a more consistent and even rhythm series of patterns that generally align with a polite - and linear society ...(even though that’s not what “it” is)

but this thread — is not about THAT

guitar thoughts :

$$ re-listened to John Mayer’s heavier things tonight as I drove my non linear self and my first born 17 y/o daughter back into flagstaff after having seen the Grand MotherTruckin Canyon tonight ...that’s another thread right there , man

Mayer’s strat tone on those songs is pristine and simple- uncluttered and expressive but also accessible and well paced — really like those songs even though he sings like a breathy teenager dork...

my strat is a bad *** girl too ...if it were not so ...I PINKY PROMISE y’all that I would not deceive u so ...it’s a 1965 reissue and I bought it in Macon Georgia about 6-7 years ago ...first “top shelf guitar I ever took outta the store “....the pickups are vintage rich and each speaks its own dialect like formally educated ambassadors from a more hopeful planet ...it’s a sunburst finish w/maple syrup sex sauce neck and it’s VERY difficult to walk past it in any room without genuinely desiring to touch it - TO LOVE IT — to see how it WANTS TO BE PLAYED

I’ve been playing for about 34 years now and most of that time was not casual playing- lots of giggng on 3 continents- healthy amount of studio work - outdoor festivals (but knit ONE damn green room experience in my life!)...and many many woodshed periods of making myself get better around some really great musicians-

hey y’all — lift each other up here and there where u can ok ?
Music is given to us as an outlet for expression and is also one of the best CULTURAL BRIDGES THERE ARE ...I’ve made more friends of color / non English speaking buds and just uncovered random happy freaks of nature through music than any other way ....don’t say “no” to the weird gig offers - go sit in at your friends “black church “ and play if you are deemed good enough to do so — hell — play polka - whatever — FLEX THAT MUSICAL MUSCLE !!

Ps - I’ve taken a week off from work and am slap happy for doing so - so you’re likely to see odd hours posts from me as I’m back in Arizona until Friday

peace y’all

RUDD I can’t wait to meet you damnit
It’s remarkably peculiar how I think I sometimes get distinctly clear vibes and impressions about people’s personalities just by their posts here — and I’m buying Stock in “Ruddlys Riffs” at the moment....

PS - My LesPaul isn’t top shelf - but I’ve been told I know how to get the most out of it AND ...that guitar has made experienced Georgia blues men - SIGH and EXHALE as my broken *** case is opened to reveal that hot assed tattooed biker ***** axe I have ....she’s got that curved body thats made for loving and a ghetto bookie bottom end that’s just “sonic justice and instant authority “...she ain’t elegant ...but she’s the one you’re going to helplessly cheat on your main squeeze with in shameful gutter sex type venues -

Bridge pickup loses gain all the time though and that’s about to PISS ME OFF IRRATIONALLY...

when I played every weekend out and about - I had to change them every week

when I discovered elixir strings - that helped - they really do hold up better for a small bit more price point

playing casually I change them once every month and a half or so -

Don't you dare bad mouth Jerry Reid. He drove with the Bandit and took a beating from those bikers for trying to defend Fred's honor at that choke and puke. He does play a mean guitar though.

You fellows are way more experienced than I am (I've never played out live anywhere, I would just do the cliche thing and jam in the garage with some other friends who weren't really serious either). Got into playing in '90 because a buddy just happened to have an extra guitar laying around and he showed me some chords. Taught myself with some books and tab mostly. Got stuck in a rut and burned out, so I sold my guitar and amp. Smartly kept the acoustic guitar because I knew I would eventually come back to playing music at some point. After 5 years of not playing any guitar at all, Youtube guitar videos helped me get out of the rut I was stuck in and I got a lot better at playing because I took the time to better understand a thimble full of music theory. I've got the bug again like I did when I first started which is nice since there's not much else to do. And being a DINK I tend to have *too much time on my hands.*

Those are some nice amps Rudd. I don't have vintage gear although I stupidly sold a Rockman quite some time ago.

(And in the interest of being on the side of all that's right... FK UNC Basketball)

* Styx have a few songs I enjoy and I'm a Paul Rudd fan so this video never fails to give me a chuckle.

:pimp:

Jerry Reid is like Ray Stevens with a better jawline ain’t he ?

There WAS a kind of sweet innocent corny shittastic character to them and Mel tillis and Dom Delouise there for a minute though

(I’m just generally prejudiced and frankly - SALTY towards country music I’m general though)

Have learned to like four or five of those his in small carefully managed doses though :)

There are some differences for different models but for the most part Strats/Teles have a 25.5" scale length (from nut to bridge) while Les Pauls are 24.75". Not a big difference but they feel different to me (Gibson a little easier to bend on with same strings as Strat).

The LP Jr is the same scale length as a standard LP and it does typically have a P90.
