I can dig Roll With the Changes. Don't Let Him Go is a fun REO song to play too. I really like the solo on My Sharona but I had trouble trying to learn it (it's been a while may revisit it sometime). I don't quite have the chops to play as fast as I may need to for some of stuff. Some others I enjoy...

Another Brick in the Wall
Young Lust
Ride On
There's Gonna Be Some Rockin'
Cowboy Song
One of These Nights
Don't Ask Me No Questions
Call Me the Breeze

-planning in building a pedal board...buddy of mine has a *high end* wood shop, so i got the carpentry aspect covered.

^thoughts on clean power supplies? Wanna stay with something manufactured in the 1st(or 2nd...cioks is made in Poland) world. No Chinese crap.

-any other pointers appreciated.

I've made several over the years and one thing to watch out for is they can get really heavy if you are not careful. My best version ended up being based on the Pedaltrain boards with strips instead of a solid surface. Currently I use a board from Blackbird.

A lot of pros use the Voodoo Labs power supplies. I know from having several of their pedals that they do quality work and are made in the USA. I use a Decibel 11 Hot Stone.

-yep, he talks about music like my wife(voice/opera scholar) talks about music. Above my pay grade, although the "little things" are what i notice most in songs/playing as well...so i understand.

^we saw dark night in the theater...she didnt care for it. I asked was it the violence/suspense. Nope...it was because the music never "resolved" itself, which is likely by design to elicit certain emotions in regular folk, but to her it was torture.

-depends on the model: jr, standard, special, custom shop etc. Once you know that, Reverb may/should be able to show you what they've sold for recently. Sales price>asking price...for accurate value.

Thanks...I have a friend in a local band (Sammy's Left Eye) who is going to look at it as well.

-post a pic if you are willing. We guitar nerds would appreciate...this thread is a welcome diversion from politics/lack of sports.

Yes...was my late uncle's. I had the sn# checked to get the year and it was made in Nashville. I have pics. I thought about taking it to a couple of local spots to get an estimate as well.
Look at EBAY "Completed Sales"... you'll get a pretty good idea from that as opposed to just listings.

@FargenBastich If it's an SG you are looking for those mid 2000's Special Faded are a great deal. Especially if you can find one of the early ones with the crescent moon inlays.

I'm not looking to buy a guitar at the moment. Although I wouldn't mind having an SG if I had the funds for one. I am planning on building my own this guitar this winter though.

1. Loving fooling around and writing licks and riffs in open D. I take a bass players approach to it, I also fool around a bit on banjo, and get a little funk blues stank going with this tuning. Definitely a fan.

2. The issue at hand.....what shops if any handle in store, Warwick, Modulus, Ernie Ball, and Spector basses? It has been a hot minute since I actually walked into a shop, much less test driven any new bass. Surely there's something up in Louisville that handles those models.

I'm considering dropping the money for Music Man, some new iteration (had a Streamer, currently have Corvette) and have never actually put my hands on a Modulus or Spector but I'd really like to.

Been awhile since I've been into Wilcutt's here, Bob might stock some of those now for all I know. If I'm gonna drop something north of 2K on a new bass, I think I'm gonna want to test drive it lol

Also, whilst I have the ear of you git players, what are y'alls opinions on 5 string basses? Its such a divisive thing amongst bass players lol I used to have one, didn't care for it, but that was also maybe 15 yrs ago. Much different place now in my musical journey where I could really use it for some expanded filthiness. Just wondering if its even "a thing" for guitar players preference wise. Most cats I've jammed with couldn't care less one way or the other. So maybe it's just us low end guys who overthink it.

-started as a bass player. A bass guitar has 4 strings. Period.

-some jazz dudes make it work...but for rock if i see a dude with a 5 string, i automatically know im gonna hate the band/music.

If money is an issue, check out their import brand Sterling. Very good quality and they get set up in the USA factory.

In general, I'm not a fan. It only gives you 4 more notes. If it's just a standard bass with a wider neck and a 5th string added it often sounds flubby/farty and like it doesn't intonate properly.

There are two bass players I jam with. One has a cheaper 5 string and it sounds like awful. The other has a nicer bass, that has a longer scale length so the low B intonates properly and has more tension so it's not so flubby. It sounds good to me.

I use a Warwick 5 string and would counter that some folks who don’t like 5 are intimidated by it and have trouble adapting. Not in every case of course but some.

It did take some getting used to but actually prefer it now.

-intimidation? i don't understand.

-didn't mean to offend. Just stating years of my *personal* experience/observation. Opinions/a-holes and whatnot.

-ultimately: play whatcha like...what ever inspires you to make music is the only thing that matters.

-never owned anything other than a 4 string. I did have a rickenbacker 4003 fretless...which is a different instrument entirely. Sold for a tidy sum...kinda wish i still had it.

No offense taken or meant to be given, sorry if it came off that way. I’ve had anecdotal experiences like that was just my point.

You get used to working around and with the B string, I feel that it helped with my slapping and popping technique as well when I was learning that stuff.

Anybody use/know anything about the amplitube? Like, how does it work, what you need to run it, is it worth a damn?

They have a few different products that work either with a smartphone, or a computer recording software (DAW) to simulate an amp and effects for recording. Either way you need some type of hardware interface device to plug into that connects to your phone or computer.

I have the small iRig that plugs into your phone and lets you jam with headphones. It sounds ok but there are other things I would use instead. I wouldn't get it again.

Are you wanting something to just play/practice or are you looking to record?

Yeah, I like his show too. Josh is funny, knowledgeable and an all around nice guy. His "101" episodes where he explains different types of effects are really good.

-at this point any guitar/amp i want ro pick up is north of 1k(minimum). Pedals are a *somewhat* affordable way to scratch the itch...until I can justify a big expenditure.

I'm in the same boat. The great thing about pedals is that one can make a drastic difference in your sound and if you buy them used its pretty easy to get your money back to try somethings else.

Just playing around and practicing. I went down a YouTube rabbit hole and found a vid of a Brian May signature amplitube and it blew me away. I didn't know tech like that existed.

That is a plug-in that you would use with a DAW (digital audio workstation) like ProTools, Ableton, Logic, etc. These can run $500-$1000. Then you would need an interface to convert your guitar signal to something your computer can see. These go for $150-$600 or so.

For just practicing and goofing around I would suggest one of the Boss Katana amps. Great bargain, can use with headphones for quiet if you need it, and additional settings are pretty easy to edit with an app and a tablet. Also users share patches they make that you can download - including several Brian May inspired.

-tried out my latest acquisitions last night..fulltone custon shop mini deja vibe 3 v2 (really cool) and an animals pedal tioga road distortion (affordable japanese rat-type pedal)...small and built like a tank.

-having never done much in the way of covers...1-2 per set "our way" plus usually having a simple rig: guitar /od/ boost/ trem, Figuring out pedals is a challenge for me. The modulation stuff is intuitive. But finding good "usable" tones out of distortion or fuzz...is gonna take some time.
